Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week July 24 - July 30

ZTE Axon Gold
Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post listing the best current US prepaid and unlocked phone deals.

This week's Deal of the Week is the unlocked ZTE Axon 32 GB (new) LTE Android phone in gold finish for $159.98 $199.98 at Newegg with free shipping. A free ZTE Flip cover and a set of JBL wired earphones are also included.

Update 7/25: Newegg has increased the Axon's price to $199.98, but it's still a good deal considering the phone's specs and its $249.99 regular price.

A metal body, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB of internal memory and a Snapdragon 801 SOC are highlights of the Axon's near flagship specs. There's also a 5.5" 1080x1920ps IPS screen, 13 MP main and 8 MP front facing cameras, Dolby audio and a large, but non-removable 3000 mAH battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge. The Axon supports all US and international GSM and HSPA bands plus LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 17, 29 and 30 making it compatible with the AT&T and T-Mobile networks.

    2. Good find! Thanks. I've added it to the post.

    3. I just went to new egg and that phone is 199. Is there a promo code?

    4. Newegg raised the price. There's no promo code that I know of.

  2. What does the deal of the week pick have over a 32gb $180 Moto G4?

As a mostly USA user I like that the G4 will work on all networks but not sure if it is lacking spec wise in any practical sense. I realize that I'm not getting a better than average camera with the G4.

    1. Snapdragon 801 processor, 4k video recording and nfc is what I notice. If those aren't a big deal to you then go with the motoG4

  3. ZTE is amazing!! Everyone wants to pound their chest and scream the praises of Apple, Samsung, Moto, etc, but the best value is consistently with ZTE.

    1. Yeah, initially. But after owning 2 zte's the past year, & finally breaking down and buying a "better" brand I'd rather pay more initially and have the phone hold up rather than always buying another after a few months. Both of my zte's USB port stopped functioning, charging, etc. You get what you pay for!!

  4. Straight Talk "Apple iPhone 5s 16GB (Verizon or AT&T) $149.99"
Does ST really sell a Verizon version of the iPhone 5S?
Is it unlocked like their iPhone 5 was?

    1. Yes, the Straight Talk iPhone 5s appears on the Straight Talk website in both AT&T only and Verizon only zip codes and has been spotted in Walmart with a sticker on the box that says it works on both Straight Talk and Verizon-only Total Wireless.

The Verizon network version is not GSM unlocked according to people who bought it and tried an AT&T or T_Mobile SIM in it.

    2. Has anyone tried putting a Tracfone CDMA(Verizon) sim card in this Straight Talk /or Total Wireless Apple iPhone 5s to see if it'll work with other Verizon MVNO's?

    3. I just purchased the ST Iphone 5s at walmart. Salesman assured me it was verizon (didnt really believe him but I'm ok with at&t as 2nd choice). The sim pouch on back of the box says straight talk/total wireless & box has model A1453. Several websites say that model A1453 is locked to sprint only and model A1533 comes in cdma (verizon) or gsm (at&t & t-mobile). Sprint coverage in my area is very limited (rocky mountains). Box is unopened but it's 1 day after 15 day return policy. Not sure if i should activate, try to return or exchange different phone. any ideas?

    4. P.S. (ST iphone 5s) I slid the sim card out of the pouch on box. The card has SIMV9 in the code but the sim id starts with 891480 (instead of 890148 per your article on 10/31/14). The box doesn’t have a network code. Can ST lock phones to sprint service only? Per sprint coverage maps, a nearby town is all "off network roaming". If i activate with that zip, will the phone use verizon? Thanks.

    5. A SIM with an ID starting with 891480 is a Verizon SIM (890148 in the other article is a typo). A Sprint SIM ID starts with 890112.

A Straight Talk Verizon SIM will only connect to Verizon, there's no way it ever activate on Sprint.

  6. Wow, $12.99 a year for a 2nd phone line: SCD Tracfone Alcatel A383g. Thanks for posting!

    1. How soon do these have to be activated to get the one year bundle?

      Delete
    2. Does anyone know what network this uses? Ends in G so either AT&T or T-Mobile. Too bad not a C or it would be Verizon and make a fantastic glovebox phone, especially with the basic phone roaming bonus.

    3. Why is Tracfone's Big Easy bundled with one year service only $12.99 ??? Is the phone on AT&T whose 2g gets shut down later this year? Is that why this one year bundle is only $12.99???

      Delete
    4. I don't know if it's on T-Mobile or AT&T, but the Alcatel A383g Big Easy Plus is a 3G phone so it won't be affected by the 2G shutdown.

      Delete
    5. Can the year be added to an existing line instead?

      Delete
    6. Mine got here today. There is no extra airtime card. The year of service loads automatic on activation. A dollar per month for a spare line is hard to beat.

    1. The only phones that are compatible with Project Fi are the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6.

  8. With BF 2016 just 4 months away, RingPlus fubar'd, and no game changing MVNOs on the horizon, it doesn't seem like there'll be any phone deals worth pursuing for the rest of the year.

Here's hoping phones with Nougat and at least 3GB of RAM hit $50 by the end of 2017.

  9. finding nokia 521 and l90 phones for 13 and 19 dollars respectfully at walmart on clearance. They say walmart family plan but work for tmobile customers.

    ReplyDelete
  10. When you say T-Mobile compatible, do you mean volte, hotspot and Wi-Fi calling works out of the box, like an iPhone?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hotspot should work on T-Mobile plans that support hotspot. I do not know if WiFi calling and VoLTE work on the Axon. They have been reported to work on the more expensive Axon Pro but I can't find any indication as to whether or not they work on the Axon.

      Delete
  11. I see why people flock to the iPhone, you know it will work with T-Mobile volte, hotspot and Wi-Fi calling out of the box, even a Verizon iPhone will automatically have these features, unlocked Android? A crap shoot.

  12. Is it true on iPhones the apn is automatically updated instead of having to enter it manually on a non carrier Android?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If, and only if, the carrier is an official Apple partner, the iPhone will download a Carrier Profile that sets the proper APN.

This system breaks down with MVNOs of Apple partner operators that aren't Apple partners themselves and also use different APN settings than their MNO (most AT&T MVNOs). The APN gets set to the MNO's APN and the MMS portion of the APN can't be edited leading to non-working MMS.

On Android each phone has a database of APNs. Carrier branded Android phones generally only have the carrier's APN(S) in the database. Factory unlocked phones like Nexus phones, the Moto G4, ZTE Axon, etc. have a database containing hundreds of APNs from carriers all over the world.

The Android phone's APN selection screen will display only the APNs in the database which match the SIM's Mobile Country Code and Mobile Network Code. It there are more than one matching APNs the phone will select one as the default but allow the user to use a different APn or enter a new one.

If there is no matching APN in the database (common with carrier branded phones) the user will need to enter the APN manually. Some carrier branded Android phones will not allow an APN to be manually entered, but most do.

  16. Stupid newbie question: Can I purchase the Straigh Talk or Total Wireless iPhone 5S at Walmart and use it on a different Verizon MVNO?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Generally not. Phones for all the TracFone brands are locked. They only work on the TracFone brand they were sold for such as Straight Talk or Total Wireless. The only exceptions are that most Verizon based TracFone, Net10, or Straight Talk phones also work on Page Plus and that some recent Verizon based iPhone 5s's are labeled for and work on both Total Wireless and Straight Talk.
