Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week July 31 - Aug 6

Apple iPhone 5s
Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post listing the best current US prepaid and unlocked phone deals.

This week's Deal of the Week is the Apple 5s 16 GB which is available for between $149.99 and $199.99 from a number of prepaid operators:

  • Straight Talk iPhone 5s 149.00 at Walmart
  • Total Wireless Apple iPhone 5s $149.00 at Walmart.
  • Boost Mobile iPhone 5s $199.99 plus $50 account credit after 2 months at Boost Mobile

  1. Can the TW Iphone 5s work on ATT after being unlocked by TW (12 months of service required ?What has e been xperience with this on ST Verizon newtwork phones ?

    1. An unlocked iPhone 5s should work on AT&T. However, in spite of what it says on the TW website, I've never heard of TracFone actually unlocking a phone.

    2. Buy the Straight Talk 5s from Walmart and use a Straight Talk BYOD AT&T SIM kit. The Straight Talk 5s from Walmart is the A1453 model and works with CDMA and GSM and will only work with TracFone family SIM's like Straight Talk. Don't use the SIM that comes with the phone if you want AT&T towers, That is a CDMA SIM for Verizon towers.

    3. You will be shackled by ST's horrible customer service - not worth it. The ATT GoPhone 5S would be a better deal for only $50 more.

    4. Will a tracfone cdma sim work on TW iPhone 5s or TW's 5s?

    5. I don't know as I haven't heard of anyone tying that. I'm guessing it might work if the SIM was already activated in a supported Verizon phone's MEID.

  3. Please be careful doing business with Tracfone and its brands. Their customer support is light years from efficient and their systems glitchy. They will sometimes erase your data and tell you you have used it all. Do not trust what they tell you online or on the phone as they will say they never said that.
It is my duty as a past customer to warn you agains all those brands including but not limited to total wireless, net10, straight talk, page plus, simple mobile, telcel America, tracfone etc. they are all managed by the same inefficient management and have overseas customer support which mean people will lie to you just to get you off the phone or chat.

    2. Mostly a fair warning. But I've had great "overseas support" at times elsewhere, and bad US support. Overseas support does not mean "people will lie to you just to get you off the phone or chat."

Let's retire the old "foreign devils" idea, and the idea that only Americans are capable of doing a good job.

    3. "I've had great "overseas support"

I understand the point you are trying to make. Unfortunately, I cant say the same about my own experiences. I am currently litigating a situation with Tracfone where their overseas customer agents flat out lied to me and misrepresented the brand. I believe it is due to the fact that since they are in foreign countries where legal procedures are not common and misrepresentations of what is being claimed in the websites are not legally enforced. These reps are more likely to deceive customers and misrepresent the brand. Let me give you an example...
One rep told me the $25 dollars plan could not be combined with the $10 add-on on total wireless and went as far as saying that the reason the add on had worked in the past for me was because of a system glitch but now that they fixed the glitch I shouldn't and wouldn't be getting my add on data. When I later talked to the supervisor, they admitted the rep had made things up.
That is just one example of my interactions with their CS and certainly not the only one. Another supervisor told me that I had used up all my data which was another lie that Tracfone again went back to fix for me.
I'm not implying that foreign support is bad and American is all peachy. Unfortunately, when you live in a different country, it is easier for you to lie and misrepresent because you are either not aware of the liability that carries or because you just plain don't care because you are so far away from the US.
I understand people in other countries need jobs and need to survive so I don't completely fault them but I do fault the companies that hire them and either not train them right or fail to follow up on what they do day in and day out.
I have had issues with other companies here in the States and I still wouldn't recommend those companies just because they are American. This has nothing to do with nationality and everything to do with illegal and sketchy practices by companies like Tracfone and others.

    4. I'm currently with Total Wireless and have to call CS and spend several minutes just to solve simple tasks. When I was with Verizon it was not so. The money I save with TW is nice but the tradeoff is settling with TW poor customer service. The call quality is different as well. Calls are sometimes dropped when inside buildings, places where I had a good experience when on Verizon. You've been warned.

  4. Went to Bestbuy link for ZTE Z223 should be $9.99 not .99

    1. I can't figure out what this phone offers over-and-above the Z222 that is still listed at BB for $6.99 (though availability is spotty). Some comparison sites list HSDPA versus UMTS radio (though oddly the user's manuals say the exact opposite, the Z223 lists UMTS). The older Z222 has 900/1800 MHz GSM, which is about to not matter unless you are looking for a take-along for a part of the world that is keeping those frequencies. The advertised "mobile email" on the Z222 is removed in the latest, probably final, software update; both access email only through the toy web browser interface.

I bought a gaggle of Z222's last week for a first phone for my kids. I followed the unlock procedure listed on slickdeals.net and had no problem getting one unlocked, though for Consumer Cellular I probably didn't need to. Works well so far for what it is...they messaged MMS/SMS configs automatically and I was in business in no time. (Wish they'd done that for my Lumia 635 Windows phone!) The tiny display text isn't really suitable for seniors, but for a burner, backup, or teenage data-hog's penalty phone either should work fine.

    2. Did the unlock zero out the id or is this a clean unlock?

      Delete
    3. @Craig Blome I don't think there's any advantage to the Z223 over the Z222.

HSPA and HSPA+ are based on and interoperable with UMTS. "UMTS" is often used in phone specs to refer to any and all UMTS based technologies.

      Delete
    4. As far as I know it was a clean unlock...they sent a 16 digit code, I entered it, and viola. Haven't got an active T-Mobile account or the like to know for certain.

Dennis, I found a blurb page for the Z223 that mentions FM radio, but the user's manual makes no mention of this. Could be a future FW revision, but I doubt it is a priority for a rock bottom entry level phone.

    1. I bought one a year ago for $40 and the build quality of the phone isn't great but signal and voice quality is pretty good. $40 for a year of service at 5 cent/minute was a nice deal since I didn't need a smart phone. I'm going to buy another. At $20 it's cheaper than keeping service on the current one for another year. Hell, it's cheaper than a 60 minute 90 day refill card after taxes!

    1. Isn't it locked to go phone, and isn't the Verizon version more universal?

      Delete
    2. I don't think ATT is that restrictive. With Android and Windows phones, you can use a Go Phone on other ATT network brands like Cricket without unlocking. Maybe apple is different though.

      Delete
    3. Apple is different. The MMS settings are not user editable and if an AT&T MVNO isn't an Apple partner Apple sets them to the AT&T mothership ones which don't work with AT&T MVNOs.

    4. @Zach AT&T iPhone 5S's are locked. Verizon's are unlocked but they are also more expensive than the AT&T ones.

    5. It should work on Cricket, though.

  11. Dennis do you know if the $30 sim kits at Wal-Mart are tied together. The packing says $30 towards airtime but also referenced the $30 Wal-Mart plan. (if that makes sense)Thanks

    1. It's a SIM and $30 airtime. You can activate the SIM on any plan and apply the airtime to whichever plan you choose. I don't know if you can apply the airtime to a different active account or not.

  13. Bought a ZTE Zmax 2 a couple of weeks ago on the Best Buy promo. I confirmed today that it will install and run Pokémon GO; that makes it one of the cheapest if not the cheapest phones with that capability at the moment. Something to note for anyone who has a child (or inner child) who is itching to pick up that addiction. :)
