More Data on Expo Mobile Unlimited Plans Starting September 1

An anonymous tipster forwarded an image to me that looks like it was sent to Expo Mobile dealers. It announces increased data allowances for the MVNO's $40, $50 and $60 plans. The changes, listed below, go into effect September 1.

  • The $40 plan will be getting an increase from 1 GB to 1.5 GB of high speed data.
  • The $50 plan is going from 2 GB to 2.5 GB of high speed data.
  • The $60 plan will go from 3.5 GB to 4 GB of high sped data.
All three plans include unlimited voice minutes and messaging and unlimited 64 Kbps throttled data after the first 1.5, 2.5, or 4 GB of high speed data. Expo Mobile offers service on Verizon or Sprint. That's either Verizon or Sprint, not both carriers on the same phone. On Verizon, high speed data is throttled to 5 Mbps, just like it is on every other Verizon MVNO.

There are no changes to Expo Mobile's other plans which include monthly, Pay As You Go and mobile broadband plans and are listed below.

Monthly Plans:

  • $5/30 days - 100 combined minutes and texts, no data, Sprint network only, available online only.
  • $9/30 days - 250 minutes, 250 texts, no data, Sprint network only, available online only.
  • $18/30 days - 500 minutes, 500 texts, no data, Sprint network only, available online only.
  • $19/30 days - 500 minutes, unlimited texts, no data, Sprint or Verizon.
  • $30/30 days - unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, no data, Sprint or Verizon.
  • $35/30 days - unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, 500 MB HS data, unlimited 64 Kbps data, Sprint or Verizon.

Pay As You Go Plans, available on Sprint or Verizon. Unlike traditional Pay As You Go plans from other operators, unused balances do not roll over with these plans:

  • $10/90 days - 2¢/minute, 2¢/text, no data.
  • $30, $55 or $100 per 120 days - 2¢/minute, 2¢/text, 5¢/MB data (throttled to 128 Kbps).
Mobile Broadband plans, Sprint only

  • $30/30 days - 2 GB data.
  • $55/30 days - 4 GB data.
Unfortunately, even with the data increases on the $40, $50 and $60 plans, with the exception of the Pay As You Go and the sub-$10 Sprint only plans, Expo's prices are still not very competitive. Boom Mobile, Selectel and the TracFone brands offer better deals than Expo on the Verizon network at most price points. On the Sprint network; Chit Chat, Real Mobile and Boost Mobile's all give you more for less than Expo. See Verizon and Verizon MVNO Prepaid Plans Compared and Sprint and Sprint MVNO Prepaid Plans Compared to see how Expo compares with its competition.

In other Expo Mobile news, the T-Mobile GSM based service that the MVNO introduced last year, has quietly been discontinued.  There's no longer any mention of T-Mobile or GSM based plans on the Expo Mobile website and Expo customer support confirmed that they can only activate Sprint or Verizon network phones.

  2. Why should people choose Expo when their $30-60 plans are so uncompetitive comparing to Sprint and Verizon's own prepaid plans?
