Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Oct 16 - Oct 22

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post featuring the best current US prepaid and unlocked phone deals.

This week's Deal of the Week is the unlocked ZTE Axon 32 GB LTE Android phone new in a sealed box for $179.00 from Ebay seller ngb_electronics (99.6 positive feedback rating).

The Axon sold for $300 when it was released in July, 2015. It features a metal body, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory and a Snapdragon 801 SOC. There's a 5.5" 1080x1920ps IPS screen, 13 MP main and 8 MP front facing cameras, Dolby audio and a large, but non-removable 3000 mAH battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge.

The Axon supports all US and international GSM and HSPA bands plus LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 17, 29 and 30 making it compatible with the AT&T and T-Mobile networks although it doesn't support T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling or VoLTE. See Engadget's review for more about the Axon.

  1. I don't understand the unlocked Android thing, for instance an unlocked Verizon iPhone 5s will work on T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling, hotspot ect without any modifications, but not an unlocked Android?

    1. Yup, all the carrier are basically forced to allow any iPhone to access VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling, because of Apple's massive market power. But the carrier can limit benefits to only Android phones they sell.

I think this deal has been pulled, we cleaned them out.........

  4. I just came back from Family Dollar and I could not purchase it because they massed up their system. I don't know other stores having same issue but my area messed up with wrong price :(

  6. Hey Dennis, do you know if there is any way to force the freedompop GSM sim to activate on at&t network instead of T-Mobile?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There's no way to force an AT&T SIM to activate on T-Mobile. You need a T-Mobile SIM for that if Freedom Pop offers them.

      Delete
    2. FreedomPop Global SIMs have a 3 UK MCC/MNC and activate on 3 UK.

In the US they connect to AT&T if it's available and T-Mobile if there's no AT&T signal. I have two FreedomPop Global SIMs and they are on AT&T nearly all the time and only switch to T-Mobile in AT&T dead spots, which is a good thing if you ask me.

Some phones show two FreedomPop entries, one for AT&T and the other for T-Mobile, in the manual network selection menu and let you chose which one you want.

    3. Dennis,
Please delete my "AnonymousOctober 16, 2016 at 5:19 PM" post if you deem it incorrect and this one if necessary.

I did not realize that the FP GSM SIM works on AT&T and switches to T-Mobile.

Can the FP GSM SIM be activated in a T-Mobile only service area in the US does activation have to happen in an AT&T service area?

    4. FreedomPop Global SIMs ship pre-activated. It should not matter if first use is in a location with only T-Mobile service.

  7. Another Freedompop Scam. $10 hotspot is actually $30, no way to take out the $20 2GB plan.

  9. Has anyone used PureTalk USA? I have an Iphone 6 but don't know if it will work with it. IS the reception good? do I have to jailbreak? I want to use MMS but I don't know if it will work with my phone.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. According to PureTalk MMS works with iPhones on their service. PureTalk is an AT&T MVNO. Reception should be the same as with Cricket or any other AT&T MVNO. Unlike with postpaid AT&T there's no off-network roaming.

  10. Shop cell deals advertises htc one a9 unlocked for boost mobile. I wonder if that is an error or if that phone could really work on boost?

    1. Sure, Sprint offered the HTC One A9. They probably have excess inventory that they re-SKU'ed to Boost and sold to ShopCellDeals.

  11. @Dennis, an offtopic question. I ported out my number from Ultra to H2o today, it was "successful" (I received email from H2o confirm port completed and I registered number on H2o website). However, the old Ultra SIM still has signal and can make call/use LTE data. How can one number registered on two different network? And it's been few hours. I tried to turn two cell phones on, one with H2o and one with old Ultra, I use my wife's phone call my number, the one with H2o sim rings. Old Ultra phone didn't get the call. Do you know what's happened? I checked some "carrierLookup" site as well as GoogleVoice, they both show my numbers is under ATT.

    1. That's called mixed service and is common when porting a number. The Ultra SIM should stop working within 48 hours but probably sooner.

  12. The Axon that retailed for $450 in July 2015 was the 4-GB Version. The one in photo above is only the 2-GB version which initially retailed for $299 in July 2015. Still, 179 is decent price but it's not the 4-GB version.

  13. Best Buy also has the Cricket Wireless branded Alcatel Flint for $50 not bad for a bacis phone with 16GB memory. The Best Buy reviews look ok for what it is. However battery capacity appears not to be so great.

    1. The Kyocera Hydro Air does not have an auto focus camera, so you will have difficulty getting clear pictures or scanning bar codes on receipts, etc.

  15. Hi Dennis. Under your post on HSN, Tracfone's Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime is indicated as under AT&T network. However, in the HSN website, it say CDMA network, which implies Verizon. Is there a mistake?

  16. When a $1 freedompop SIM turns into $50, its not such a great deal. I didn't realized these SIM cards were PRE-ACTIVATED! and so, I blew past the first month, got auto charged $20 for the first sim (second month cause I failed to downgrade in time), and $28 for the second sim I foolishly added on for just $0.01, was also pre-activated and included a "premium" package service since apparently I didn't uncheck that box when I ordered. WOW. what a smuck I must be to piss away $50 like a total idiot for getting NOTHING in return except for 2 unused SIM cards! Please dont repeat my mistake. I just blew all the savings I've had for the past year from this site on one lousy oversite. FREEDOMPOP SIMS ARE PRE-ACTIVATED PEOPLE!! BEWARE!

  17. Verizon Motorola G4 Play LTE Android phone $64.99 SEEMS like a good deal, EXCEPT: doesn't appear the bootloader unlock is supported by motorola- anyone confirm? AND, can it be used on GSM? or ONLY CDMA? and finally- how about buying a working unlock code? anyone have luck finding a cheap one? (cause paying the verison randsom, is just not an option!)

    1. How much or how long is the ransom?

      Delete
    2. It says on the back of the phone package how long the phone must be used on Verizon before it will activate on a Verizon MVNO. With most Verizon Prepaid phones only a month is required but someone reported that for the Moto G4 Play a year's service is required.

The Verizon Prepaid Moto G4 Play is CDMA only. It's not SIM locked but it doesn't support any network except Verizon's

The bootloader is locked and Motorola won't give you a code to unlock it. There are no 3rd party bootloader unlocks available either.

      Delete
    3. Yes, was hoping OP could tell us what the package says re how long it must be on Verizon before it can be used on a VZ MVNO.

    4. in the trash it goes!

    5. Thanks (Dennis) for the info on CDMA only. I wouldn't have suspected that, but then again it is Verizon.

I'm interested in the Play because it covers all four carriers, plus has a removable battery. Still have to decide between Amazon Prime version ($99) and unlocked ($150). Probably time to just pay the $150 and be done with it.

    6. No deal for me on the Verzion G4 as the Verizon plans don't fit my budget and the ransom is 1 year. Also for not that much more one can buy the G4 Play and use it on any network. The question for me is whether is it worth saving $50 to buy the Amazon version and put up with the ads (how annoying?, privacy issues?)

      Delete
    7. Check to see if the Amazon one is easily rootable to get rid of the adware.

      Delete
    8. (same Anonymous as 10/19 11:03 am): I stopped by Best Buy last night to see a G4Play in person. All they had was the Verizon prepaid one. The back of the box doesn't say what the ransom is specifically. "...Phone may only be used with Verizon Prepaid service for 1 year or until a minimum payment is reserved. See //vzw.com/prepaidunlockingpolicy for more details...."

That URL takes you to http://www.verizon.com/about/consumer-safety/device-unlocking-policy They don't seem to mention any other amount for any specific phones, so I guess a full year?

I bought a Moto E earlier this year, then the fee was one month's service, or about $30.

      Delete
    9. If you google Amazon Prime G4 Play you will probably see a site that gives examples of the ads. Didn't seem too bad to me.

But the bootloader is locked, which I would call "not easily rootable". Depends on your skills I guess. To me, just getting the $150 regular unlocked one seems like the best choice.

  18. I was thinking about Straight Talk and had an employee scan a 1 year service card for me at WalMart and the 911 fee for 1 year is $1 instead of $12. More savings but still no mobile hotspot allowed.
