Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Oct 23 - Oct 29

Alcatel Onetouch Idol 3
Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post featuring the best current US prepaid and unlocked phone deals.

This week's Deal of the Week is the unlocked Alcatel Idol 3 LTE Android phone on sale for $139.99 at Best Buy, online and in stores.

The Idol 3, which launched at $199.99 last year, offers solid mid-range specs at an entry level price. It has 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal memory and a Snapdragon 615 processor. There's a 5.5" 1080x1920ps IPS screen, 13 MP main and 8 MP front facing cameras, dual front-facing speakers with JBL audio, a micro SD card slot and a non-removable 2910 mAH battery. The Idol 3 ships with Android Lollipop and an official Marshmallow OTA update is available.

The Idol 3 supports all US and major international GSM and HSPA bands plus LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 17. It lacks LTE band 12 (there's a root hack to enable band 12), VoLTE and T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling making it better suited for use on AT&T than T-Mobile. The idol 3 can be rooted and the bootloader can be unlocked. There are a number of 3rd party ROMs available for it.

    2. Seems like a very good deal. Nice to see the buttons on the sides if the phone again ( vs the back).

    3. cricket LG Power looks pretty good for that price, but still got to port a number and pay for a month of service, and the big deal breaker: non-removable battery. I recently was testing a freedompop global sim in an unlocked ATT maven and the thing got into some bootloop; I didn't notice right away, picked it up later and almost got burnt it was so hot. I wasn't able to turn it off for some time because each time I tried, it would reboot and bootloop. Since it doesn't have removable battery, i thought for awhile the thing would just meltdown and perhaps burst into flames even. After 1/2 hr of fiddling with it, I finally took the sim out and was able to get it to turn off and cool down. This experience reinforced my REQUIREMENT that ALL PHONES HAVE REMOVABLE BATTERIES! Its a SAFETY and security issue and one I will not compromise on.

    4. I hate those LG buttons on the back. good to see they put those back in the right (standard) spot. use to love LG phones, but big problem with LG- no unlockable bootloaders. I read there are a few out there, but generally, LG don't support bootloader unlock very well at all.

  2. Idol 3 is a great phone. I keep looking to replace it with something that has more bang for the buck, but the only thing close is the zmax pro and its screen issues keep me away.

    1. Just putting my 2 cents in. We have 2 Zmax Pros and have no screen problems. Pretty great phone for the price. It is VERY big. But if that doesn't bother you I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Also, I had T-Mobile service 4 years ago and just returned to it(MetroPCs) and the difference in coverage is HUGE. Just in case anybody was considering T-Mobile based service.

      Delete
    2. What screen issues?

      Delete
    3. Metro PCS has left Sprint behind. But I need something with good coverage, and T-Mobile isn't in that league yet. Only two carriers play in that league.

      Delete
    4. Zmax pro has screen tearing issues as reported by a number of users. It could be not a big deal, or a deal breaker depending upon your type of usage. Still a phone I would grab if I switch to Mpcs.

    5. like the Idol 3 EXCEPT: non-removable battery (deal breaker), and screen resolution too high. no need for that high of screen resolution. All it does is suck up more processor resources and suck down the battery, and I'm never going to see or need those extra pixels! there really are some practical limits on some specs and afterthat, the marketing department just cant convince me of the negative side effects of the spec rat race. To some extent, its the same for camera megapixels. more is better up to the point where your files get too big to manage and there's diminishing return. Your average user is starting to catch on some, but then there's too many who are clueless who just go with more must be better.

Re: "Best Buy Free shipping on orders of $35 or more. Returned phones subject to a $35 restocking fee."

People on HoFo say from experience return fee doesn't apply to prepaid phone, only contract phones.

Maybe people who returned prepaid phones here within the last month can share their experiences.

    2. yes if you choose to purchase and return any item Bestbuy gives your drivers license # to a 3Rd party any and all your returns. Your drivers license then goes into a database that MANY retailers use/pay to see your returns history. http://drwhitecoat.com/avoiding-best-buys-personal-information-grab/

    6. The Best Buy in Richmond IN has never asked to see my driver license but I always have the sale receipt. I returned something to the Meijer store in that city and had to submit my license and was told "This is the third return you have made to this store. You can't do this again." I had the receipt too! And so I am NOT a Meijer customer anymore. Even their fuel station employees were rude to me. Horrible service.

  12. My local Walmart have Verizon Prepaid Galaxy S4 for $99. Anyone knows if this phone will work on AT&T MVNO out of box? Thanks a bunch!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It looks like it will work with some issues including no LTE on T-Mobile ans a persistent "SIM is not from Verizon message".

Start your research here: verizon galaxy s4 on t-mobile network - Google Search

      Delete
    2. or if you can use it (walmart s4) on any verizon MVNO like BOOM, for example, or what the actual "randsom" is on this particluar handset?

      Delete
    3. The S4 is an old phone so it probably only needs one month's payment on Verizon Prepaid before it will work on Verizon MVNOs. Check the back of the package where it should say whether one month or 12 are requred.

      Delete
    4. and can this Verizon S4 be rooted? and bootloader unlocked? (I spent the last hour trying to answer this question and found that it was once possible, but perhaps no longer is, but its tough trying to get the actual answer on a phone which has literally thousands of forum posts around the net!)

    5. walmart.com showing $169.99 for verizon s4. OLD OLD phone. I might pay $99, where in the heck did you see that?

      Delete
    6. It looks like the Verizon S4 can only be rooted if it's running certain older versions of KitKat. You won't know if its possible until you get the phone and see what it's running.

    7. On the Verizon Galaxy S4 from Walmart. Use Brickseek.com to see if there are any local Walmart Store with them they are currently priced at $99 in stores. Item # 47090196

    8. awesome tips here. picked up the verizon s4 from walmart today for $99 as reported here. used brickseek and found a store showing 3 in stock. Had to talk to three different clerks to finally convince one to actually go look for it physically for me and low and behold, he found one in the back. It looks like its been handled alot in the back as the packaging was pretty beat up, but upon opening, appears fine. On the back of the verizon packaging, it states the "randsom" is one month paid on verizon PP before it can be used on another MVNO. I hope to get it working on BOOM! if I can get it rooted so I can install Xposed framework first. will report back here if I can get root. brand new S4 for $99 is pretty good price!

      Delete
    9. $99 verizon S4 is on android lollipop 5.0.1 out of the box. going to try root, but reading lots of conflicting blogs on xda if it can be rooted or not. If so, its a keeper, if not, it will be returned.

    10. Wreck the phone by bricking (by your own choice) and return it for money???
      Real classy...

    11. wrapping up my exploration with this $99 S4. Got it rooted with kingroot pretty easy. Got AppOps (by nowsky) working; which requires root for lollipop. But decided that wasn't enough and I needed to flash xposed and xprivacy. Researching XDA and found that this S4 needs to be "de-odex-ed" for Xposed to work. Reading alittle further into it and decided that was further than I am willing to tinker. Complexity and risk too great; not worth it to me. ymmv.

  13. Challenging request! looking for a phone that I can use on BOOM! (verizon) which can be rooted AND bootloader unlocked. My ONLY other requirement is that it has a REMOVABLE battery! I'd prefer to spend no more than $100, but let me know if there's ANYTHING! cheers!

    1. Check out the LG Ultimate 2 (3G only), Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (very old). They all appear to have removable batteries and either unlockable bootloaders or the ability to install a custom recovery using Flashify.
