FreedomPop Launches Online Store for Refurbished Smartphones

freedompop-freedomshop
Unbeknownst to people, there is a huge market for selling refurbished smartphones. This best explains why Apple has its own business for selling refurbished iPhones. Realizing how big this market is, FreedomPop MVNO has decided to dive into this industry and start selling refurbished smartphones along with its SIM cards and free mobile service plans.

The decision to enter into this industry was announced earlier today as the MVNO introduced its new online store, called FreedomShop. On the website, you'll be able to see a number of Android and iOS smartphones launched by major device manufacturers within the last two or three years. And considering these are pre-owned and refurbished smartphones, they are up to 80% cheaper on the website.

Despite the fact that the website just launched, it already enlists over 100 smartphones. Among the devices you'll be able to find on the online store include different models from smartphone manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, LG, Motorola, Kyocera, and Sharp.

According to FreedomPop, each refurbished pre-owned and used device that they sell on their website has been meticulously reviewed and tested by their team composed of skilled technicians. As a result, they are able to provide these smartphones in excellent condition.

When you decide to purchase a refurbished phone from FreedomShop, you'll be entitled to a 30-day money back guarantee along with a 90-day warranty. Each device also comes with FreedomPop's free mobile phone and internet service that comes with the following inclusions each month:
  • 500 texts
  • 200 minutes
  • 500MB of data
If you are interested in purchasing a refurbished device from FreedomShop, you can get your device shipped to you; especially if you reside in the United States, Mexico, United Kingdom and Spain.

    1. Looks to be a mix of both: GSM and CDMA phones, and some GSM+CDMA phones too (iPhone 6, Nexus 5, etc.)

  2. Are the phones unlocked so we can use it with another carrier or are they locked to Sprint/FreedomPop?

    1. Most of the phones I see could have been sold carrier locked, so assume carrier locked (because it's the norm.) Maybe the only one that could be unlocked is the Nexus 5, but I don't remember if Sprint sold that phone unlocked.

    2. If it's a GSM phone that was originally sold in the US then it can't be carrier locked since FreedomPop GSM SIM cards are British.

  4. Are these Sprint or AT&T phones or both. Are they locked to Freedompop or available to be used on other MVNOs?

  8. Went through the store and - while *mostly* not as bad as I expected - these are by far NOT good deals (guess this is how they make $). Better prices can easily be had elsewhere (Swappa, eBay, etc.).

    1. From the FAQ:
"These are Certified Pre-Owned phones. While there has been some usage on the devices previously, they have been thoroughly inspected and repackaged by us and not a third party manufacturer. We subject them to physical damage checks, functionality checks, and radio frequency tests. We data wipe and factory reset the phones before shipment."

I certainly wouldn't call these "refurbished" (there is no cleaning, repair, subassembly replacement, or other refurbishment activities taking place). I wouldn't really even call these "certified" (the inspection isn't done by the OEM or OEM's agent, and they don't appear to be conforming to any particular product specifications or testing protocols).

These phones do, however, come with a short term warranty and shorter term money back guarantee. I guess that's better than the used market generally offers???
