Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Nov 6 - Nov 12

Motorola Moto G4 Play
Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post featuring the best current US prepaid and unlocked phone deals.

This week's Deal of the Week is the Unlocked Moto G4 Play XT1607 US model LTE Android phone for $129.99 at B&H or Amazon. B&H is the better deal for most buyers as Amazon collects sales tax in all states that have a sales tax, while B&H only charges tax in New York state.

The G4 Play launched in September. Its regular price is $149.99. It features a 5-inch 720x1280px screen, Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB internal memory. There's a microSD card slot, 8MP rear and 5MP front cameras, and a removable 2,800mAh battery. It runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and is a "universal" phone that's compatible with Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile as well most networks worldwide.

  1. Moto g4 play has REMOVABLE BATTERY!! I didnt think any moto phone did; are there any others that do? However, NO unlockable bootloader from motorola: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215/session/L3RpbWUvMTQ3ODQ1NzA5My9zaWQvbnRwMlUtMm4%3D

    1. Motorola won't unlock the bootloader on the Amazon Prime add-supported Moto G4 Play or the Verizon Prepaid version. The bootloader on the regular G4 Play can be unlocked. See xda-developers - View Single Post - Verizon Moto G4 Play not Unlockable?.

    2. The Moto E has removable battery. I've seen many other Motorola phones that have also.

      Delete
    3. I have a Moto E LTE and the battery is definitely designed to be user removable. The G4 Play is the first Motorola Android phone I've heard of with a removable battery since the 2012 Defy XT.

    4. Dennis, is that a typo? Moto E non-removable battery according to all the spec pages....

  2. Re: textnow moto g3: can bootloader be unlocked [official moto site says gsm can, but this is sprint, so?] Can it be used on gsm carriers? Or would it also require sim unlock? Can it be used on ringplus?

    1. The G3 is new to TextNow and until knowledgeable people start playing with it we won't really know the all the answers. Here's some speculation:

The Sprint/Boost/Virgin Mobile G3 is model XT1548. Motorola will unlock its bootloader on request. See XT1548 Virgin Mobile - xda-developers

According to this XDA Thread Is there a SIM unlock for the XT1548 (CDMA) model? - xda-developers the phone is SIM unlocked for international use but US GSM networks are blocked with no fix available.

Sprint had to add the phone's MEID to the MVNO database for it to work on TextNow so it should be clear for activation on RingPlus. However, TextNow phones usually have their bootloaders unlocked and a custom TextNow ROM flashed. To use them on other Sprint MVNOs like RingPlus you need to flash the stock ROM or a 3rd party custom ROM.

    2. Just noticed TWRP recovery on my textnow lg Volt. Gives me some good hope for this g3 i just ordered. When i get it, I'll poke around and see if i can answer a few of these questions. Seems likely it will be easy to root and bootloader unlock and flash xposed framework. Not sure about the rest, although, i suspect it will be easy to use on ringplus without much troubles.

    1. That's been Verizon's full retail price since launch. It is $42 cheaper than the unlocked GSM-only version direct from Motorola. But I don't think it's an especially good deal for a phone with a Snapdragon 625. It is a unique phone with its Moto Mod accessories, so if it appeals to you go for it.

    3. indeed, USC G4 Play on their site for $29! I'll take one. but how do I get one? I type in zip codes in Chicago suburbs where they show service but says not available in that area. So what area is it available? Does anyone else sell them, like walmart? Looks like USC roams on verizon, so they must be a CDMA network. Do they have the same kind of blacklist/whitelist, or FEC BS as the other two CDMA carriers? The G4 play is a "universal" phone which appears easily bootloader unlockable and rootable, so it seems like one could crack it open and use it on any other service if they could just get a SIM unlock code. interesting indeed. anyone have more info? I'm assuming that you'd have to buy a month of service at least to get the $29 price, right? and maybe an activation, shipping, etc...

  8. Planning on switching to MetroPCS and I'm trying to choose between the Zmax Pro and the LG Stylo 2 Plus. I've looked up the specs and I'm still on the fence. The two major differences I see are the CPU and the display. The LG has an SD 430 while the Zmax has an SD 617 but they're both octa-core. Is the 617 really faster than the 430? The LG has a 720p display while the Zmax has a 1080p display. Is that a noticeable difference? Both have 13MP cameras but is one better than the other? I appreciate any help. Thanks.

    3. You can see the Costco Black Friday ad at https://www.theblackfriday.com/costco-blackfriday.shtml?page=2. It really makes it look like you can buy the unlocked phone by itself; there's incentives to activate the phone by 12/31 on a new line of service. It doesn't say what the phone price would be, just that it's $55 off, limit one. $175 would make sense since the standard price of the G4 32GB is $230.

    2. He censors offensive comments.

But since there's always someone offended by something, even if they're just making it up to get attention, that means the crosshairs are on every comment posted.

It's why I stopped commenting (sans this one exception), because even this comment could be twisted into something offensive to victims of gun violence just for using a turn of phrase.

Or to grammar nazis, if I've used "turn of phrase" incorrectly.

Grievance culture is batshit crazy like that (whoops, looks like I've just offended bat droppings, crazy people and PC bros), especially since it ignores how outright abhorrent such speech policing could come across to immigrants who fled countries with similarly draconian "speech laws."

This comment will probably get nuked for the offense of "speaking the truth" (the most offensive speech known to man...oh, gotta add women to the list of offendees), but if it doesn't, the best advice I can give is to just self-censor and silence yourself.

Because if you don't, Big D will toss your comments in the trash along with everything else someone or something (wouldn't want to offend inanimate objects, plants and animals too...oh wait, I just did) finds objectionable, as if saying something that makes someone mildly uncomfortable (truth included) is the literal equivalent of a holocaust (add jews to the offendee list, even if the point is that every sane person in the world would agree that the two aren't even remotely comparable).

Anyway, there really should be a disclaimer that most comments will be trashed just because. It'd save people the time, effort and subsequent disappointment.

  15. Walmart deals I just saw at the store: $79 for the Verizon Moto G4th Play, and Cricket ZTE Fanfare 2 for $24.

Questions for the moto g4th: is it the "universal" radio, technically able to use on all 4 networks? or a special stripped down Verizon version? I get how they whitelist IMEIs for CDMA so probably impossible to use on sprint, however, I also read that verizon doesn't sim lock the GSM (LTE) radio, so could it be used out of the box on tmobile&ATT then? how bout bootloader unlock on this moto g4 play- yes, no? and finally, anyone confirm yet what the verizon "ransom" is on this model? one month, or 12? (I'm guessing 12 at this price point). I will likely pick this one up for some testing and disecting and will post up some of these answers as time allows if Dennis approves ;)

    1. The Verizon Prepaid Moto G4 Play is a special Verizon exclusive model (XT1609) with:
      No GSM bands
      Only LTE bands are 2/4/5/13
      Bootlocked can not be unlocked
      12 month ransom
$79 is the normal price for this model. It will be $29 at Dollar General on Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

    2. Thanks, Dennis. that mostly answers all of it for me. Truly amazing really how big red gets the OEMs to GUT their devices and lock them down so drastically and then they GIVE them away for much less than the cost to manufacture. Really goes to show how much value and incentive there is to get everyone hooked in and carrying personal locator tracking beacons that can literally listen in and record your every move, every spoken word, every text and email, every contact, and further upload all that super valuable data to the cloud to be repackaged and sold to the real customers for marketing and surveillance.

I'll probably pick one up for $29. Just for "marketing research". Thanks for the lead!

      Delete
    3. I like how they pitch this phone as a "universal" phone which can be used on any carrier, then quietly rip out the universal part, and the unlock-able part after people already have the intended marketing message burned into memory. Next step- sell it for so cheap, you can hardly refuse, but wait- awe shucks- bait and switch! same name but totally different product than what was marketed to me! hmmm....

    4. Thinking of buying the Black Friday Dollar General $29 Verizon Moto G4 Play. I know it's locked down to Verizon for 12 months, but is it possible to either activate it with a Verizon MVNO such as Boom Mobile, or pop in a Verizon MVNO sim card and use it that way? Really good deal for a backup phone on Verizon if it can be used this way. Thanks in advance.

      Delete
    5. You won't be able to activate the Moto G4 on a Verizon MVNO until the ransom is paid.

Activating a Verizon MVNO SIM in a different phone and swapping the SIM to the G4 will probably work. The SIM swap method has worked on other Verizon Prepaid phones although I haven't heard of anyone trying it with the G4 yet.

      Delete
    6. I just dont get how swapping a different SIM in could work? Seems too easy and simple workaround when Verizon goes to great expense to prohibit their PP devices from being used elsewhere. I will give it a try too if I can score a moto G4th at family dollar though!
