Verizon Adding Two New Prepaid Smartphone Plans Nov. 13

Verizon Logo
Verizon Wireless announced two new prepaid plans for smartphones today. The new plans, which will be available starting Sunday, November 13 are:

  • 5 GB for $50: Unlimited domestic voice, unlimited domestic and international messaging and unlimited data with the first 5 GB of data at high speed, followed by unlimited 128 Kbps data.
  • 10 GB for $70: Unlimited domestic voice, unlimited domestic and international messaging and unlimited data with the first 10 GB of data at high speed, followed by unlimited 128 Kbps data.
Both new plans also include rollover data, which Verizon calls "Carryover data". Unused high speed data rolls to the next month. Data carried over must be used within 30 days or it's lost.

These new plans aren't actually new. They were launched last month as Walmart-exclusive plans that were only available to customers using a phone or SIM purchased from Walmart.  On Sunday, the new plans will join Verizon's existing $45 and $60 plans which, are apparently unchanged.

Here's what the Verizon plan lineup will look like starting Nov. 13:
Price Per Month $45 $50 $60 $70
Unlimited Domestic Voice and Messaging
High Speed Data 2 GB (3 GB with autopay) 5 GB 5 GB (6 GB with autopay) 10 GB
Carryover Data (Unused data rolls over for 30 days)
Unlimited Calls to Mexico and Canada
Unlimited Messaging to Mexico and Canada
Unlimited Messaging to 200 countries

All Verizon Prepaid smartphone plans also include:

  • Always on Data - Unlimited data at 128 Kbps after the high speed data allotment is used up.
  • Tethering and using your phone as a hotspot.
  • Support for VoLTE which enables HD Voice, 6 way calling, video calling, WiFi Calling and simultaneous voice and data.
I was surprised that the press release announcing the new plans mentioned the $30/month unlimited voice and messaging, no data smartphone plan that was removed from the the Verizon website's list of plans and activation pages last week. I'd assumed that the $30 plan had been discontinued, but according to a Verizon spokesperson, the $30 plan is still available at Verizon stores  and through customer service.

  2. agreed. back in 2008, when I was paying $400+ monthly for 3 dumbphones, unlimited talk and text (hammered with taxes and fees and blah blah blah), if I had told King Verizon that they'd HAVE to offer me what they do now in prepaid, they'd have laughed and thought I was smoking mushrooms. THANK GOD FOR COMPETITION. It's sink or swim now VZW, for there is formidable competition, and these offerings are an axiom of their awareness of it.

  3. In Walmart, they said $50 and $70 plan for limited time offer in Walmart. I guess, they are changing to official plan. I miss Verizon's $15 for basic phone.

    1. I can guarantee you its still available. Last week I activated my new smartphone (SIM) and was activated to the $45 monthly plan. However when I go through the phone prompts to see what plans are available the $30 smartphone plan is still available.

I am sure its the same for the basic phone. Activate on the $30 plan and then switch to the $15 plan, might as well use the entire month first since you already paid the $30.

    1. A cheaper $ to GB ratio is BS? So you want to pay a lot more for some more data?
