Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Dec 25 - Dec 31

Welcome to the Christmas week edition of Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've been able found online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the unlocked Nextbit Robin 32 GB LTE Android phone on sale for $144.99 on Amazon.

The Nextbit, which sold for $399 when it launched in February, has near flagship specs including a 5.2 inch HD (1080 x 1920 px) screen, Snapdragon 808 processor, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB internal memory. Cameras are 13 MP rear and 5 MP front and there's NFC, a finger print scanner and a non-removable 2680 mAh battery.

The Robin runs a nearly stock version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Nextbit says that an Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Robin will be available soon. The Robin is rootable, the bootloader can be unlocked and it has an active third party development community.

The Robin supports LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 20 and 28 and WCDMA bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 making it compatible with most GSM carriers worldwide. It supports VoLTE on T-Mobile but not Wi-Fi calling.

  1. Is at&t band 12 LTE a data only band like T-Mobiles?

    1. Yes, all LTE bands are data only, LTE is a data only transport.

    1. The video shows that it's possible to intentionally snap the phone in by forcefully bending it with both hands. That doesn't seem to be a problem in real world use.

    2. There are many phone-bending videos on Youtube. Even for the highest end phones.

  3. Can Verizon prepaid iPhone 5s (sold be Best Buy or Target) be activated on Page Plus? Also what about Walmart Straight iPhone 5s on Page Plus Cellular? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  4. All recent Verizon Prepaid phones must first be used on Verizon Prepaid for a certain amount of time before they can be activated on any Verizon MVNO like Page Plus. The required amount of usage on Verizon Prepaid varies from one month to one year and will be listed on the back of the Verizon Prepaid phone package.
On the other hand, Straight Talk and Page Plus are both owned by the same company, TracFone. So you probably won't be allowed to activate a phone sold for Straight Talk on Page Plus.

  5. I've read on HoFo that the Straight Talk/Total Wireless iPhone 5s from Walmart can be activated on Page Plus. You have to use the SIM that comes with the phone.

I activated an ST/TW iPhone 5s on Tracfone just today.

    1. ZTE Axon 7 has dual SIM slots and has been reported to work on Verizon :) .

    2. Seems like some people are experiencing issues with the Axon 7 on Verizon, so maybe some detailed research is in order before buying one for Verizon use:

    3. How can the Axon 7 work on Verizon if it's not a CDMA phone?

      Delete
    4. Because it supports CDMA:

PhoneScoop lists the following bands for the Axon 7:
      LTE 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 7 / 12 / 13 / 17 / 20 / 25 / 26 / 29 / 30 / 41
      WCDMA 1 / 2 / 4 / 5 / 8
      CDMA 800 / 850 / 1900
      GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900

Bands in bold are used by Verizon.

    5. Will it work on Sprint too?

  8. What is the rule of thumb for unlocked BYOD to Verizon MVNO's?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First of all, it needs to be a Verizon CDMA phone. Unlocked GSM phones won't work on Verizon. And Verizon doesn't allow Sprint CDMA phones on their network.

There are universal phones that work on Verizon, such as the Moto G4, G4 Plus and G4 Play.

Verizon Prepaid phones must first be used on the Verizon Prepaid service for a certain period of time, that will be listed on the back of the phone package, before they can be used on Verizon MVNOs. If it's an older Verizon Prepaid phone, there's a good chance that it can already be used on a Verizon MVNO.

Most Verizon-based TracFone, Straight Talk, Total Wireless and Net10 phones will work on Verizon MVNOs out of the box as long as the phone has never been activated on the service it was sold for or on any other TracFone brand (listed above) this is because once a TracFone brand activates a TracFone brand phone, they won't release the phone for use on any other service even after they disconnect your service. So don't activate the phone on any TracFone brand.

Buying a Verizon-based TracFone brand phone is probably the easiest and cheapest way of getting a new Verizon compatible phone.

Keep in mind that many TracFone brands also sell GSM and Sprint phones that won't work on Verizon. Look for the code "VL" at the end of a TracFone brand phone model number.

All Total Wireless phones are Verizon-based and should work out of the box on a Verizon MVNO as long as it's never been activated on Total Wireless or on any other TracFone brand.

Verizon postpaid phones that are free of a contract will work on Verizon MVNOs and on Verizon Prepaid.

    2. @Dennis is everything said above correct?

      Delete
    3. Yes, excellent summary. The only thing I'd change is that not all Verizon-based TracFone, Straight Talk, Total Wireless and Net10 phones will work on Verizon MVNOs. Feature phones definitely won't and there have been reports of issues with some Samsung Androids and with recent iPhones. It's also a loophole that doesn't benefit TracFone and one that TracFone could close at anytime.

    4. Thanks for the info. Can you point me to a source about the Samsung Android phones that won't work?

"Most Verizon-based TracFone, Straight Talk, Total Wireless and Net10 phones will work on Verizon MVNOs out of the box as long as the phone has never been activated on the service it was sold for or on any other TracFone brand (listed above) this is because once a TracFone brand activates a TracFone brand phone, they won't release the phone for use on any other service even after they disconnect your service. Above is not exactly accurate. If you activate a 4G LTE CDMA SIM on any of the America Movil brands, the IMEI will be locked to the brand (eg Straight Talk) you activated it on. So you would not be able to activate a CDMA 4G LTE using that IMEI on the others America Movil brands (TracFone, NET10, etc). However, the IMEI should still be fine for activation on other non-America Movil MVNOs.

Work arounds presented in later posts on avoiding having your good 4G LTE CDMA phone's IMEI "Slim-locked" by activating with a different IMEI.

    6. Re: "Can you point me to a source about the Samsung Android phones that won't work?".

I can't, it was a long time ago on either HoFo or the now defunct Puppy Forum, probably the later as Google isn't finding it for me. I think the issue was with the Samsung Centura and/or the Galaxy Ace. Voice and SMS worked but data didn't.

  9. Most exellent summary on v! To further emphsize: NEVER activate a new tf brand phone on tf if u ever want to use it on any other mvno ever. Right? It would be a hassle to first activate on another mvno, but would be the ONLY way to free it from tf/am/slim.

    1. Not specifically directed at anyone, but just in general....

Firstly, I'd say that the phone is not being activated. The 4G LTE CDMA SIM is activated using a whitelisted 4G LTE CDMA IMEI. The IMEI doesn't even have to belong to the phone desired for use on the Verizon MVNO. Just use the clean whitelisted 4G LTE CDMA IMEI of any phone you don't care about to do the SIM activation and use it in the phones whose IMEI you don't want to give/lock/bind into the TracFone IMEI database. Problem solved. This does require the second phone which donates the IMEI, but that phone could be dead, broken, lost, etc. Some people buy a Verizon 4G LTE whitelisted clean junker phone from eBay, etc just for it's IMEI. I've done this, so I know it works! Happy New Year!

      Delete
    2. That sounds like a great idea but isn't the LTE SIM in a Verizon phone just for data and Verizon voice service is tied to the phones IMEI? I'm not arguing that it is. I just thought that CDMA phones worked like that. I'm more familiar with GSM phones. Also, won't TracFone lock a TracFone branded phone's IMEI when they detect one of their sims active in one of their phones? And therefore blocking the phone from use on any other MVNO?
Happy new year to you and to everyone else.

    3. Verizon LTE SIMs provision both LTE and CDMA and are swappable between phones.

TracFone locks the IMEI you give them when activating the phone the the phone's actual IMEI.

      Delete
    4. Sorry, can you please clarify?
"TracFone locks the IMEI you give them when activating the phone *the the* phone's actual IMEI."

      Delete
    5. I meant to say, "TracFone locks the IMEI you give them when activating the phone not the phone's actual IMEI." There are two different scenarios where using a different IMEI than the real one are useful.

People change the last digit of the IMEI, which is a checksum that TracFone doesn't check, to prevent the real IMEI from being locked to the specific TracFone brand.

People activate a TracFone family SIM using the IMEI of a real Verizon phone and then use the activated SIM in a non-Verizon phone such as the ZTE Axon 7 that's compatible with the Verizon network but can't be activated on it because the phone hasn't been approved by Verizon.

  10. Will an unlocked GSM phone that supports LTE band 17 also support band 12 even if it's not listed as a supported band?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, the phone has to indicate to the tower that it supports band 12.

      Delete
  11. I thought band 17 and 12 were the same.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They are if you are on AT&T. Band 17 is exclusive to AT&T and includes only the portions of band 12 that AT&T has licenses for.

      Delete
    2. So an unlocked T-Mobile phone that supports LTE band 12 will automatically support band 17 on AT&T or is there something else missing?

      Delete
    3. Yes, because AT&T's former band 17 towers are now telling phones that they support band 12 as well as band 17.
