Port to GoPhone and Get Your Second Month for Free

at&t-gophone-free-second-month-promo
GoPhone, the prepaid arm of AT&T, has announced a new promotion they are offering to customers who switch to their service. According to the operator, customers who port their number from another carrier will be entitled to a free second month of service. This is the second time GoPhone has offered the promotion to its customers, after a successful run last year. Although it excludes porting from AT&T and Cricket Wireless, the promotion will be available until February 6, 2017.

If you wish to join in on this promotion, you simply need to switch to GoPhone through their website. You'd have to pick from one of the prepaid plans offered by the carrier so that your new line of service can be activated. Your plan options include the following choices:
  • $30 monthly plan - WiFi
  • $45 monthly plan - 4GB of data
  • $60 monthly plan - 8GB of data
The value of your credit will be equal to the monthly cost of the plan you have selected. You will receive your credit after 31 days since your service was activated.

The terms of the offer, which you can view by clicking the "See below for offer details" link on the AT&T's GoPhone Offers Page state "Phone restricted to GoPhone svc for 6 months after activation. As far as I know, it's not technically possible for a carrier to SIM-lock a BYOP device. I believe that statement applies to phones purchased from AT&T which are SIM-locked. AT&T will unlock their phones for users on request after six months on prepaid service.

Discount on Certified Pre-Owned Smartphones

Apart from the promotion mentioned, GoPhone is also offering a 10% discount on certified pre-owned smartphones. The devices available under this promotion include:
  • Kyocera Hydro Air -  $35.99 (before: $39.99)
  • LG Phoenix 2 - $44 (before: $49.99)
  • Motorola Moto E - $26.99 (before: $29.99)
  • Samsung Galaxy Express 3 - $35.99 (before: $39.99)
  • Samsung Galaxy Express Prime - $53.99 (before: $59.99)
  • Samsung Galaxy Go Prime - $58.49 (currently out of stock)
  • ZTE Maven - $26.99 (before: $29.99)
  • ZTE ZMAX 2 - $53.99 (before: $59.99)
The discount on refurbished smartphones is ongoing until January 30, 2017 at 9:00 PM PT or until supplies last. This discount is only available when you purchase your device online. You also need to activate a service when you purchase a device. Once you're activated with GoPhone, your device will be locked to its service for the next six months.

  1. Just to clarify, what does it mean by "locked to its service for the next six months?" Do they not allow port-outs for 6 months?

    1. They can't block port-outs, that's prohibited by FCC rules.

    2. I think you're right Dennis--it's talking about phones locked to AT&T. Their unlocking policy calls for six months of paid service before a locked prepaid phone is eligible for unlocking.

  5. If I purchase a sim and service card from the GoPhone site, will the service card be applied to the sim card before I get it, or will the sim be activated, and then I apply the service card after I receive the sim?
    Thanks

  6. Yesterday evening, I purchased an ATT sim and a refill card.
During the online checkout process, I also gave details of the number I wish to port into ATT.

Will ATT initiate/complete the port before they send me the sim and refill card?

    1. The port will start when you get the SIM and call in or go online to activate it.

  7. Anybody know if this promotion applies to porting in & activating a line of service on a GoPhone Phone and SIM I already have but never activated? The "See below for offer details" link is unclear as to activation vs. checkout, and I was tersely told by a chat CSR that they do not answer questions about this promotion.
