Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Jan 15 - Jan 21

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' weekly Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've found today online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the TracFone Samsung Galaxy Sky LTE Android phone bundled with 1350 minutes, texts and MBs of data, one year of service, case and car charger for $129.95 at HSN.

The airtime would cost over $100 if purchased separately and the phone sells for $139.99 on Walmart and Amazon. I think it's overpriced at $139.99 but if you're a TracFone customer and can use the airtime the bundle is a great deal.

The Galaxy Sky, which is a rebranded Galaxy J3, is one of the better entry level Android phones available today.  It uses the Verizon network and runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow. There's  a Snapdragon 410 SOC, 1.5 GB of RAM, 16 GB internal memory (10 GB usable), 5 inch 720x1280px Super AMOLED screen, SD card slot and a removable 2600 mAh battery. There's a 5MP main camera with LED flash and autofocus and a 2 MP rear camera.

  1. @Dennis Bournique:

What frequency/band specs must a phone have to perform well on a GoPhone account?

    1. AT&T uses:
UMTS 850 Mhz and 1900 Mhz
      LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 12 or 17, 29 and 30

LTE band 12 or 17 and UMTS 850 and 1900 will get you 3G or LTE everywhere AT&T has service. The other LTE bands will get you more speed especially in large urban markets where band 12 or 17 are congested.

So will an unlocked Alcatel Lume perform poorly on a GoPhone account because it doesn't have all of the bands that you mentioned?

    3. Yes, it will be stuck on 3G in many areas where a phone with band 12 or 17 would get LTE.

    4. I found a phone that supports LTE bands 2, 4 and 12 but AT&T uses bands 2, 4, 12 and 5. How important is band 5 on AT&T?

      Delete
    5. Band 5 is nice to have. AT&T uses it along with bands 4 and 2 mainly in markets where they don't band 17/12 spectrum. See the band 17 map on this page: In 2016, how much LTE spectrum do Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint have -- and where? | FierceWireless. Without band 5 your phone will be more likely to fall back to 3G in the red areas on that map.

  2. Is it 1350 minutes AND texts AND data or 1350 minutes OR Texts OR data?

    1. 1350 minutes and 1350 texts and 1350 MB.

  4. I have a question about using an unlocked phone on AT&T.
If a phone supports LTE band 12, does it need band 17?

    1. With AT&T bands 12 and 17 are the same. A phone with band 12 doesn't need to support band 17.

  5. Can Tracfone phones be used on Verizon or ATT mvnos after the minutes are used up? Thanks

    1. An AT&T network TracFone needs to be unlocked to be used on AT&T MVNOS.

Brand new, never activated, Verizon network TracFone smartphones will generally work on Verizon MVNOs but used ones may not.

  6. I've noticed that many new T-Mobile network phones don't list support for the 700Mhz GSM band. Isn't 700Mhz supposed to be T-Mobile's new voice band?

    1. LTE band 12 is T-Mobile's only band in the 700 Mhz. AFAIK all current T-Mobile LTE phones support band 12.

  7. On the Feature Phone of the Week Samsung Tracfone "1350 minutes/texts/data" : I've never seen a one year card have this amount. Isn't "1350" actually the "450 - 90 day" card tripled? So is this only 90-days service included or a whole year (Normally 1200 min/texts/data).?

    1. These bundles do not come with cards. The 1 year / 1350 x 3 is automatically added to the phone upon activation by the system :) .

  10. I'm looking at a phone that supports LTE bands 2, 4, 5 and 17 but not 12. Will this phone get LTE on T-Mobile?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. T-Mobile uses LTE bands 2, 4 and 12. You would get LTE on bands 2 and 4, but not 12. Band 4 is T-Mobile's most widely deployed LTE band so you should get LTE most of the time. Band 12 signals travel further and penetrate buildings better. Without band 12 you will have less coverage indoors and at the edges of the T-Mobile network.

  11. Re: anyone care to share experience with Blu phone. Have a Blu life one x for about a year. Great phone but battery drains faster than most, even when turned off. Also takes about four hours to charge from 20 percent to full charge. My iPhone does it less than two. And remember it's not easy to find a good case for a secondary brand phone.

  12. Am I correct in my understanding that AT&T doesn't really use LTE band 12? But instead uses band 17 and broadcasts it as both band 17 and 12?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sort of:
band 12 is blocks a, b and c of the lower 700 Mhz band
band 17 is blocks b and c of the lower 700 Mhz band

AT&T uses blocks b and c and its 700 Mhz towers identify themselves to phones as operating on both band 12 and band 17.

  13. @Dennis Bournique:

Why don't the manufacturers of GSM phones just include all of the frequencies and all of the bands? Would that be so difficult?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Current mobile broadband (radio) chips cover a limited number of bands and the ones that cover more bands cost more. The phones with support for the most bands are pricey unlocked flagships like Pixels and iPhones. You would also need additional antennas to cover all the bands used in the world. Carriers also tell manufacturers to disable bands used by their direct competitors unless they are also major roaming partners.

      Delete
    2. Dennis, how about the Moto G4, G4 play? Do they cover all USA GSM carrier bands?

      Delete
    3. Most if them. The G4 and G4 Play coverr LTE bands 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/13/25/26/41 so it's only missing AT&T's bands 29 and 30 and T-Mobile's soon to be deployed band 66.

      Delete
    4. Thanks Dennis.

How serious is the lack of at&t bands 29 & 30? Does it mean no service / service holes or just lack of ability to switch away from congestion?

Maybe another way of asking is are there places where service will only be available on 29/30 or if 29/30 is available it will always be accompanied by service on other bands?

      Delete
  14. Band 30 is an additional capacity layer. It is in addition to the normal bands and only deployed in congested markets.

Band 29 is unpaired. Used only for download.

  15. Dennis: I picked up a CC Moto G4 Play (XT1607), unlocked the SIM, unlocked the bootloader, should work just fine on all carriers (but missing sprints whitelist). I have an active BOOM SIM and tried to swap it in here but it wont connect to the network. APN and PRL are same as other working sets (transpyre and g4 play xt1609), but those are both verizon branded, while this G4 is CC. What am I missing? Profile update? or some #*#* secret code? seems like its not executing the ota provisioning. clues please? I'm guessing you'll be able to answer this one off the top of your head, from experience! cheers! thanks.

    1. Sorry, I don't know anything about the Consumer Cellular G4 Play's specs. Does it even support CDMA? Carrier branded phones are often crippled in one way or another.

Do a web search to see if you can find any reports of others using the CC G4 Play on the Verizon network.

Also Consumer Cellular phones are SIM locked. Did you do a SIM unlock?

      Delete
    2. Yes, I got a $2 SIM unlock from ebay, and tested it out OK with a freedompop global SIM. Its the model XT1607, which is the same model as the unlocked model, so has all the bands, including CDMA. I also unlocked the bootloader via motorola directly. I figure it isn't on Sprints whitelist, but it passed all the IMEI checkers for verizon I tried (BOOM, etc). It just seems like its not provisioning. I suppose it could be something in the CC ROM, but it doesn't appear they've modified it at all- there's NO carrier Bloat, only one tiny CC account apk.

      Delete
    3. Doesn't Verizon require phones to be in a Verizon database before they can be used on the Verizon network? A phone sold for an AT&T/T-Mobile MVNO like CC wouldn't be in Verizon's database.

      Delete
    4. You only need to give Verizon or a Verizon MVNO a whitelisted MEID when activating a SIM.

The OP is trying to use an already active Boom Verizon SIM in a phone which should technically support the Verizon network. That normally works but in this case it doesn't, for reasons unknown.

      Delete
    5. OK, I only asked because the OP said
"it passed all the IMEI checkers for verizon"
I was wondering how a phone sold for an AT&T MVNO could pass Verizon IMEI checkers?

      Delete
    6. That's a good question

      Delete
    7. I believe it passes the IMEI checker for Verizon service because its hasnt been blacklisted by Verizon. As I understand, the model xt1607 is MOSTLY sold as an UNLOCKED model, but CC decided to sell it with very minimal branding and bloat (the only CC app I could find was their account app). The reason it doesn't pass Sprint checker, is because Spring uses a whitelist process. Verizon is also (Mostly) NOT SIM locking their LTE handsets (so they say), although this seems to be changing lately, as the $29 BF Verizon-only Moto G4 Play was in fact sold SIM LOCKED.

  16. DEAL: Walmarts goPhone Huawei Ascend XT for $99! This set just recently was ROOTED making it a super option for what you get at this price. I picked up mine on the $50 BF deal. Bootloader unlock direct from Huawei made it a pretty sure bet for ROOT, which is now available! only major drawback, imo, is the battery is NON-removable, and only average sized for above average sized screen. The 6" screen is exellent, and still fits in my front pocket just fine, but I wouldnt be caught in skinny jeans either.
