Updated 2/16: Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Feb 12 - Feb 18

Samsung Galaxy express 3
Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' weekly Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've found today online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the AT&T GoPhone Samsung Galaxy Express 3 LTE Android phone on sale this week only for $19.99 at Target stores only (not online). Use the store locator on the page linked above to find it at a location near you.

The Samsung Express 3 is a modern entry level phone that runs Android Marshmallow and has a 4.5 inch 480x800px AMOLED screen, an Exynos 3475 SOC, 1 GB RAM and 8 GB of internal  storage. There's a removable battery and SD card slot. The 5 MP rear camera has autofocus and an LED flash and there's a 2 MP front camera.

Keep in mind that this is a very basic phone, but what do you expect for $20 bucks? 8GB storage means only around 2 GB  free so you won't be able to install many apps. But it's still a good deal for a child's first phone or as spare or backup phone.

The Express 3 will work out of the box on GoPhone, AT&T postpaid, Cricket and AT&T MVNOs. AT&T reportedly will unlock it for free if you follow these instructions correctly. The phone supports LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 12; UMTS 850, 1700, 1900 and 2100 and quad band GSM. That's a lot of bands for an inexpensive phone. The inclusion of the global LTE 1 and 7 and UMTS 2100 bands makes the Express 3 a serviceable disposable phone for international travel if unlocked.

    1. T-Mobile uses LTE bands 2,4 and 12 so yes, as Dennis already pointed out!

  6. "AT&T reportedly will unlock it for free if you follow these instructions correctly"

Your link is a slickdeals post from 8 months ago. More recent slickdeals posts say that AT&T closed this loophole. Do you have any clarity on that?

    1. That happens. Just submit your request again. You may have to do that a few times before it works. If you don't want to deal with the hassle, buy a code from eBay for $2 or less.

    1. I just received my unlock codes from AT&T from the Galaxy Express 3. My problem is that I don't know _anyone_ with a non-AT&T nano SIM. My local T-Mobile and Verizon stores won't help me out. What's a quick-n-cheap source of a nano SIM?

      Delete
    2. TracFone SIM kits are $1 at Target and BestBuy stores. Use the CDMA (Verizon) nano SIM from the kit to trigger the unlock code prompt.

    3. Thanks a bunch, Dennis! I went with the $1 Simple Mobile SIM kit at Best Buy and unlocked 'em both in minutes.

I was complaining here a few weeks ago about the recent dearth of decent $15 phones, so I cleaned out my local Target when you highlighted this deal. Looks like these hit most of my requirements--autofocus, GPS, LED, micro-SD slot, removable battery, and _cheap_. The decent band coverage and network unlock availability is a really nice bonus if I ever decide to activate 'em (for now, wifi only works for me).

I'm sure you put in quite a bit of time on this stuff, and I really appreciate it. Solid site, good advice. Dennis FTW!!

    4. You don't need a SIM for this phone. Just go to the phone dialer and use this code: #7465625*638*#

That brings up the request for the unlock code - no SIM required!

  8. Who cares? You can get most AT&T GoPhone and Cricket phones unlocked on eBay for $2 or $3. Recent MetroPCS phones on the other hand cost $25 or $30 to unlock. The thing is, most GoPhone and Cricket phones support all the bands used by T-Mobile and MetroPCS.

    1. Unless things have changed recently Samsung unlocks are more than $2 or $3. I paid $20 a couple of years ago for a Note 4 unlock. That was the cheapest I could find on eBay.

    2. The unlock code for this Samsung Express 3 is only $1 via eBay. Not sure why most Samsungs are at least $15 and why T-Mobile variants are even more.

All the SE's are capable of working on all four major networks whether it is the SE (Global/Sprint/A1723) or the SE (United States/A1662) - UPC 888462817356 brings up a few results that show it is unlocked. eBay result show it as an AT&T - Network Locked but i do not believe that is the case.

  12. I picked up the Galaxy express 3 at Target, currently using a Net10 phone with an at&t SIM.
Think I need a nano SIM for the Galaxy.

So, I should buy a SIM kit, and power the phone on with the net10 at&t SIM? Then do the transfer as usual?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, if your current Net10 SIM isn't a nano, buy a Net 10 SIM kit and activate the GSM nano SIM in the kit online choosing the option to transfer your existing Net10 service to the new SIM.

BTW, if you want AT&T to unlock the phone, you have to request and wait to receive the unlock code before you power up the phone with any AT&T network SIM, including a Net10 AT&T SIM.

      Delete
    2. On the topic of Net10, I received a text from Net10 about a free phone upgrade to Galaxy On5. From my search it appears to be sold with a t-mobile SIM.
Would it be locked to a t-mobile SIM, or would it be possible to swap the SIM out for AT&T before activation?

T-mobile drops out too much around here. So I'd have to pass on the phone.

      Delete
    3. I called the number for the Galaxy On5. They checked and said it has a T-mobile SIM. I told them that I require AT&T, he said that after receiving the phone, but before activating, I can call and request a AT&T SIM, which will arrive in 2 days. Also want me to ship my current phone to them, after activating the new one.

I said I'll call back, not really sure about having a 5" screen, Seems excessive for my needs.

    4. Update on Net10 free phone upgrade: I called back and mentioned that I want to keep AT&T service, she talked to a supervisor. Came back and said the free phone is part of a T-Mobile migration, so I would have to switch to get the upgrade phone. She said the phone offer stands if I decide to take it.

Again, Thanks to prepaidphonenews for making me an informed prepaid customer. Before visiting this site, I had no idea which network my phone was using.

    4. Price match is usually only valid on merchandise that a competitor has in stock. I've had retailers check availability.
I can't be certain that Wal-Mart will check, but it's something to keep in mind as a possibility.

Most of mine have gone without a hitch, but this last one, I checked my email to see if I'd gotten the unlock code - no email after two business days. I checked the unlock request status on AT&T's website - and there it was.

    2. Sorry, I don't know off hand. It should be easy for you to find benchmarks for both SOCs with a web search or two.

      Delete
    3. Benchmarks? Sure, found plenty of those. I was just looking for an expert opinion about actual performance. Thanks anyway!

      Delete
    4. I'm not an expert on benchmarks, in fact all I know about them (and I could be wrong) is:
There are many benchmarks, two well known ones that measure actual CPU performance (as opposed to video, gaming or JavaScript Performance), are AnTuTu and Geekbench.
Higher scores are better on both AnTuTu and Geekbench.

      Delete
    5. How you use the phone is also an important variable as Dennis implies. A benchmark is virtually always an imperfect simulation or proxy for actual use. People don't buy CPUs, they buy phones. A CPU can perform well in one phone, and relatively slowly in another. So just comparing relative CPU performance won't necessarily predict which phone will perform better overall, unless there are large differences in tested CPU performance and the benchmark is a good proxy for the phone’s CPU usage.
Usability is often a better assessment for comparing phones. For example, the original Moto X did not have a high-end processor. The phone’s software was so well designed, that it was much easier to use in performing many tasks. The phone often seemed more responsive than some flagships with faster processors.

  21. I picked up one of these Galaxy Express 3's. Target was out, but had not updated their online site, so Best Buy matched price. I want to root phone, but have never done it. I see a bunch of 'How-To' videos on YouTube, but have never done this. Do I have to do the ATT unlock thing first? Also, after rooting, will I have to reload OS? (Would prefer Lollipop).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. As far as I know no one has found a root method for the Galaxy Express 3.

SIM unlocking doesn't have anything to do with root.

Rooting basically unlocks the phone's administrator account. That, combined with the right knowledge and apps lets you delete normally undeletable apps, enable hotspot if it's blocked by your operator and perform various other customizations and optimizations.

To install an different OS version you need to either:
      1) Flash a factory stock image of the desired OS if one exists (there's no Lollipop image for the Express 3) using a manufacturer supplied utility such as Samsung Kies or Odin.
      Or
      2) Unlock the phone's bootloader and install a custom "ROM" that has been created specifically for your model of phone. AFAIK there's no bootloader unlock method for the Express 3 and no ROMs for it either.

See How to Root Your Android Phone with SuperSU and TWRP - How-To-Geek.com for an overview of rooting, bootloader unlocking and their risks and benefits.

    ReplyDelete
  23. by the way i googled this some time ago and just now again in response to your question about call volume there remains the warning you can damage your hardware if too loud. also you can blow out the speakers. funny thing the smartphones biggest weakness has been call quality and call volume and speakerphone volume which is what i most looked for. i came up with the alcatel idol 3 for volume and quality and i got a question i would like a htc one M8 and am only secure in getting a refurb. from the likes of Best Buy who never has it. a refurb. might be off on the speaker quality and volume and i only learned about this phones great volume after the supply dried up. i would wait until a new one was in the $100. price range. is that reasonable. from ek
