Updated 2/25: Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Feb 19 - Feb 25

Apple iPhone 5s
Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' weekly Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've found today online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the Boost Mobile or Virgin Mobile iPhone 5s for 99.99 brand new from the Boost or Virgin Mobile websites. This is the lowest price I've seen since Black Friday for a brand new iPhone.

If you'd like a more modern iPhone, Boost and Virgin also have the iPhone SE for $179.99 for the 16 GB model and $229.99 for the 64 GB version. If you'd like an iPhone with a larger screen Boost has the 4.7 inch CPO (refurbished) iPhone 6 16GB for $199.99.

Boost and Virgin's prices for the the 5s, SE and 6 are really good as long as you are or want to be a Boost or Virgin Mobile customer. The phones are locked to either Boost or Virgin who will only unlock them after 12 months of paid service on their respective services.

  1. I've read that the AT&T gophones will work on AT&T MVNOs. Will the Cricket phones sold at Target also work?

    1. Cricket phones need to be unlocked before they will work on MVNOs.

    2. Cricket phone and AT&T GoPhone unlock codes only cost around $2 on eBay. Buying unlock codes on eBay is safe since your payment information is kept safe by eBay. Most unlock code sellers only accept PayPal as a payment method so you don't even have to type in your card information.

  2. Target - Boost Mobile Samsung Galaxy J3 EMERGE LTE Android phone $69.99 (reg $129.99). This is the best price yet for any of the (3) Sprint variations,(Sprint Prepaid, Boost, VM) J3 Emerge's.

  3. If I buy the AT&T iPhone 5s with $45 airtime is the airtime a card or code that can be used by someone else on another phone? I'm only interested in the iPhone and getting it unlocked - I have no interest in moving my phone number to GoPhone.

    1. According to posts on SlickDeals the airtime is tied to the phone's IMEI and is automatically applied when the phone is activated. Supposedly you can call CS and say you are replacing a phone om an existing GoPhone account with the iPhone and they will apply the credit to the existing account.

    2. No the $45 Airtime is tied to the activated iPhone 5s on a new or existing GoPhone account.

    3. The IPhone can be unlocked and used by unlocking it via methods on the web. The $45 is tied to the SIM card when you activate the sim, the $45 is available. You can put the sim in another phone etc.

  9. Hello- I just bought a Moto G4 Plus and wonder if it works on Boom Mobile V plan. I can't figure out if the V plan is GSM or CDMA. Can anyone help me? Because Open Signal shows that V has the best coverage in my area. I had Boost before and the Sprint signals were horrendous here in S. Jersey. Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions. I'm looking for a good V MVNO plan that is GSM.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. V stands for Verizon which is a CDMA based network.

The G4 plus is a universal phone that works on all four major networks so it will work on the Boom V Plans.

  12. Thank you Dennis- But does Verizon only use CDMA or does it use GSM also? I'm sorry to sound confused, but is LTE the same as GSM? I know that the G4 Plus is unlocked to any carrier, but I got the impression that GSM was somehow better than CDMA, and that LTE was 4g and better. So many letters and numbers and it gets confusing to me. All I want to do is use the G4 plus on a GSM network if possible as long as that's the better signal. Thanks again. Sorry to be such a noob.

    1. Of the four national networks in the US, Verizon and Sprint use CDMA for voice and 2G and 3G data. AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM for voice and 3G data and 3.5G HSPA+ data which is sometimes called 4G but isn't LTE. All four networks use LTE for, well, LTE data which Verizon insists on calling 4G LTE. Everyone else just calls it LTE but it's the same thing. Verizon and Sprint do not use and are not compatible with GSM. AT&T and T-Mobile do not use and are not compatible with CDMA. The Moto G4 is one of the few phones that supports both GSM and CDMA networks which is why it can be used on all four networks. As long as your phone supports the network that works best for you, which your phone does, it makes no difference whether the network is CDMA or GSM. MVNOs identify Verizon service with either (V), (CDMA), (CDMAV) or the "red" network. Sprint is (CDMAS), (PCS) or yellow. AT&T is (GSMA) or blue. And T-Mobile is (GSMT) or magenta.

    2. Interesting anon 4:24PM
I always equated a SIM card / slot = GSM but I guess from what you are saying that is not the technically correct.

      Delete
    3. LTE is always via SIM card, even in CDMA phones. :)

      Delete
    4. Service on the Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile LTE networks always requires a new LTE SIM whenever you switch providers. The only exception is the Sprint network which also requires an LTE SIM but doesn't require (or want) you to switch out the LTE SIM in your phone. However, universal phones like the Moto G4 still require an Sprint LTE SIM in order to function on the Sprint LTE network.

  13. @Dennis did AT&T shut down their 2G network yet?

  14. Looking at the MotoG4 Play, looking at the supported bands/frequencies, not sure what to look for. Currently using AT&T MVNOs, in the Chicago area.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. AT&T uses the following bands:
      UMTS (3G): 850 and 1900 Mhz.
      LTE: bands 2,4,5,12,29,30

The unlocked Moto G4 Play XT1607 supports all of AT&T's bands except LTE 29 and 30 which aren't widely used yet and aren't supported by some of the current phones sold by AT&T.

  16. Are net10 SIMs still locked to the phone they're in?

Wondering about using an active SIM in a new or deactivated phone. In the past, net10 operators had me enter a code into the phone I was switching from to disable it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Net10 feature phone SIMs are locked to the phone they came with.

The SIMS smartphones sold by are not locked to the phone. However, Net10 uses the phone's IMEI or MEID serial number as the account ID. If you move the SIM from a Net10 smartphone to another phone and then sell or give a way the first phone, Net10 will disable your SIM when the new owner activates the phone with a new Net10 SIM.

Net10 BYOP SIMs are not locked and can be swapped between compatible

      Delete
    2. Thanks Dennis. The disabling of the SIM does sound familiar.

Here's my situation, currently using a net10 Android phone with micro SIM. Want to see if I can switch back and forth from my current Android to a net10 LG 442g that's new, been powered up but not activated. By using a SIM adapter to compensate for the size.

Main concern is accidently disabling a phone, though activating a new SIM would remedy that.

      Delete
    3. That won't work for two reasons.
      1. Net10 feature phones are locked to the SIM they came with and won't accept any other.
      2. Billing on the feature phones is handed by the "airtime tank" software in the phone rather than in the cloud. Your unactivated phone's airtime tank is empty.

You could use your smartphone SIM in an unlocked feature phone or, if your Net10 SIM is on AT&T in an AT&T locked feature phone, or in a T-Mobile feature phone if your SIM is on T-Mobile.

      Delete
    4. Alright, I'll keep the new LG feature phone as a cheap backup.

Just general info regarding the air tank. I was using a $35 unlimited/500mb card in a feature phone a couple years back. Don't recall what the min display read. When the Net10 unlimited 30 day card first debuted, the min display would read 50,000 mins.

Thanks.. Very good info on the SIM kit, and smart phone SIMs.

  17. Is the iPhone 5s still worth getting in 2017? I'm really thinking about getting it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes it is. The 64-bit processor still feels responsive running iOS 10.2.1.
You could also buy the iPhone SE for as little as $180 refurb, $200 new.
It's faster and has some other advantages.

    2. It's so tiny as to discourage using the onscreen keyboard. But it's a swell device otherwise.

As a long time user of Android marshmallow, I am surprised to find that iOS is rather crude in places, and the user is straitjacketed with what they can do with their screen. The App Store is odd... from when you click on the campground picnic table sign icon to going in and actually having to go back and forth between searching on the bottom and searching on the top of the screen. Very confusing to someone who is used to the Google Play Store, where search just works.

Less attention is given to the user experience and iOS. Android phones have a consistent back button for going up a level inside apps. There is none on the iPhone. You will find the back function in five or six different places. Which is kind of a strange oversight, considering how consistent the user interface is on Macintosh computers.

Nevertheless the performance is really good. Other than the compromised user interface to not having a back button, apps on the iPhone generally seem better than their Android counterparts. And they crash less.

I am going to be selling my iPhone 5S very soon because without ringplus I really can't use it anymore.

    3. I kept my 5S when I got a 6S, and I just can't part with it. Much handier for one hand use than the 6S, Slips into smaller pockets. The 4" screen is fine for me, and I don't have any trouble reaching ocross the 6S screen when using one hand, which sometimes causes me to miss when I use the 6S 4.7" screen. When I need more room on the 5S I just rotate it. Keyboard is very accurate, so the slightly smaller one is not an issue for me.

      Delete
    4. iPhone 5S still works fine on AT&T and Verizon, but doesn't support T-Mobile Band 12 or Sprint carrier aggregation. For those important capabilities, faster CPU and a better camera, spend more and get a SE or 6S.
Verizon and AT&T are also doing carrier aggregation now, so you might need the newer iPhones to get the fastest data speeds.

      Delete
    5. iPhone SE also has 2GB RAM vs 1GB, Apple Pay support and a 3X faster GPU. It will support future iOS upgrades for much longer than the 5S. The battery lasts a lot longer.

  18. Boost is reselling used Sprint iPhone 6. I bought one and it is locked. Now since the phone must have been used on Sprint for 2 years or more, won't Sprint simply unlock it if I ask them to?

Even otherwise if I get it unlocked by a 3rd party, will it work on Verizon? If so, will it get LTE? What about ATT or TMobile?

Thanks. Folks here are so knowledgeable.

    1. eBay phone unlockers can unlock some new Boost iPhones, but not the used ones. You will have to use it on Boost for 12 months before they will unlock it for you. If you get a Domestic SIM Unlock (DSU), you can use the phone on ATT and Tmo. You cannot activate a Verizon SIM in this phone, but an active Vzw SIM should work and give you LTE data. If a Vzw supervisor added the MEID to the Vzw activation database, you could activate their SIM.

      Delete
    2. Thank you for replying. I will try third party. If it doesn't work will look at trading it in somewhere or use it on Boost for a year.
