Updated 3/22: Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Mar 19 - Mar 25

Welcome to the latest edition of Prepaid Phone News' Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones found today online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the well regarded AT&T GoPhone LG Phoenix 2 LTE Android phone for $49.99 $59.99 at Best Buy.

Update 3/21: Price increased to $59.99.

The Phoenix 2 features a 5 inch 720x1280 px screen, Snapdragon 210 SOC, 1.5 GB RAM, 16 GB internal memory, memory card slot, NFC and a removable battery. There's an 8 MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash and a 5 MP front facing camera with selfie light.

The Phoenix 2 appears to be a better phone than its successor, the LG Phoenix 3, which launched last week. The new Phoenix 3 has a lower resolution (480x854 vs 720x1280 px) screen and camera (5 MP vs 8 MP) than the Phoenix 2. With the new model already available, expect to see supplies of the Phoenix 2 drying up quickly.

  1. Ting still offers the best deal on a new, unlocked Moto G4 Play, $99. Third week in a row, $50 off. They also sell a new LG Tribute 5 for $55.

    1. Loving my Moto G4 Play on boom! Mobile(VZ). Also own Moto G4 but prefer the "Play's" smaller form factor. Decent battery life and nice camera too.

      Delete
    2. Ting now has the unlocked Moto G4 16GB on sale for $169, $10 less than the sale prices shown above for Amazon and Walmart. Ting includes your choice of a Sprint or T-Mobile service SIM cars, which normally costs $9 if you buy it separately.

      Delete
    3. Ting ties the $249 Amazon price on the Moto G4 Plus 64GB, and includes your choice of CDMA or GSM SIM card. Ting beats B&H and Walmart's price on this phone by 99c.

      Delete
    4. If you like the LG G5 for the Sprint network, Ting is selling new ones for $349, or $279 off. This includes the Ting CDMA SIM card.

  2. I've got the Verizon MOTO G4 PLay, and coming from a LG G3, it's a litle slower, and has some lag when opening or swtiching apps, but the battery and camera are some of the best for under $100 new, let alone <$60 right now. Screen is just fine for thesize, excellent quality, and overall performance is better than all the other $100-150 budget phones that I've used over the past two years from Virgin and M-PCS

    1. Was thinking about the Moto G4 Play, but I've been reading on reviews and the Motorola forums that there is a problem with the GPS. Anyone have info to share on that subject? If there are problems with the GPS it would be a no-go for me.

      Delete
    2. Absolutely an issue with GPS. We have (3) G4 Play's. Two XT1609 (Verizon variant) and one XT1607 (US Cellular variant). GPS is unusable with all three. Experiencing all the issues stated in the Motorola and XDA forums. All three are being sent in for warranty repair. This derails an otherwise great phone. Totally unacceptable.

      Delete
    3. "All three are being sent in for warranty repair. This derails an otherwise great phone. Totally unacceptable."

Is there actually a warranty fix for this issue?

It can't be all or I would imagine there would be a much bigger s**t storm? If it is affecting a majority of G4s then there certainly should be a recall.

Certain build dates to watch out for?

      Delete
    4. There are varying reports: some repaired, some customers on their third replacement with the same issues. My three were purchased in different time zones over a span of a couple of months...random issues? I think not. I believe a lot of people are quick to wrongly blame Google Maps, as was I. Not to mention the earpiece buzzing issue which is affecting 2 of the 3 handsets we have (also documented on the Lenovo and XDA forums)

  3. Isn't the Snapdragon 210 in the Phoenix 2 a very slow CPU?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The 210 is near the bottom of Qualcomm's current lineup. The next step up is the 410 which is about 11% faster on Antutu, which is not a very significant difference. Reviewers generally say the Phoenix 2's performance is adequate. See this PCMag review LG Phoenix 2 Review & Rating | PCMag.com.

  4. Wasn't the MetroPCS LG Stylo 2 Plus down to $99? Did they increase the price?

  5. Walmart is selling the AT&T LG Phoenix 2 for $35 in-store now as it is on clearance and has been this way for a few weeks now.

    1. It's not on clearance at all stores, and some actually have it for $25 now. Check brickseek.com for local availability.

  7. Off-topic: is Sprint-based MVNO "CellNuvo" out of business? I tried today and the support and sales department are again closed.

I signed up for an account during the RingPlus exodus, and got one, but the account did not include the necessary sim card (which the web site said they sold)

I did get a few emails back from them at the time from someone who didn't seem like he knew what was going on named Tom Mannix, and he would get back with me on selling me a sim. He also said he had no idea why I'd need a SIM, and didn't know his site claimed to sell them.

I googled today and found that Tom is the founder and CEO!

If the founder and CEO of an MVNO has no idea what is going on, and questions like how to buy a SIM card which they sell on their web page flummoxes him, that is NOT good!

(For an analogy, imagine emailing T-Mobile support and getting a confused but polite Binge-On is, and he says he hasn't heard of it before, and he will get back with you.)

    1. If you are using the same device that you used on Ring Plus then you should not need a new SIM.
If you are using a Sprint Device that does not have the SIM in place then you should be able to find the correct one here https://help.ting.com/hc/en-us/articles/205428218-Finding-Your-SIM-Card
You can purchase it through Ting or eBay or from other sources.

      Delete
    2. Correct you never need to change the sim card when moving a phone between Sprint operators. That is why CellNuvo could not help you with it. It is totally unnecessary and will only add complications.

On Sprint, the sim stays with the phone permanently.

      Delete
    3. I need a new SIM. I know this for sure. Believe me :)

The RingPlus phone was an iPhone. iPhones don't work on CellNuvo. But I have simless Moto E (different size sim slot) that is approved and unlocked for CellNuvo.

I needed to get a SIM at checkout, and they gave no option for it.

Now, will a Ting sim work for everything else?

      Delete
    4. Oh it is a different phone then that the one you mentioned that you had on RingPlus.

Yes the correctly-identified Ting sim (for that specific phone as identified on their site) will work on any Sprint mvno.

      Delete
    5. "Correct you never need to change the sim card when moving a phone between Sprint operators. That is why CellNuvo could not help you with it. It is totally unnecessary and will only add complications.

On Sprint, the sim stays with the phone permanently."

So, what you are saying now is that my Moto E approved by CellNuvo cannot actually be used on anything Sprint, because the original SIM is not with it, and I might as well throw it away?

      Delete
    6. If your iPhone had a Sprint SIM, why not just transfer it to the Moto E? You can get a SIM adapter for probably less than $1 if the Moto E needs a micro SIM.

By the way, there are reports that one can use an iPhone with CellNuvo and just earn points using a different compatible device: https://www.nthcircle.com/forum/cellnuvo/223-sign-up-cellnuvo-on-iphone-but-earn-credits-on-android-device

      Delete
    7. The iPhone SIM won't work in a Moto E even with an adapter. Sprint has eight different SIM part numbers, each of which only works with specific phone models. See How to Determine Which Sprint SIM Works in Your Phone for more about this crazy Sprint policy.

      Delete
    8. Sprint SIMs are not universal in their application, but they are generic across Sprint and their MVNOs. The Moto E takes Part SIMGLW236C.

There is no personal info stored on the Sprint SIM, so there is no reason to remove it if you are going to give or sell the device to another person. But.....while you really should just keep the SIM with the device it was activated with, they are not married to that device. Once the device has been deactivated from service you can use the SIM in another device "IF" that SIM is compatible with the device you want to use it in.
In this case a Sprint iPhone SIM of any model is not compatible with a Moto E and vice versa.

      Delete
    9. This is the original anon. I see eBay has these SIMs for about $10.

But it hardly inspires faith that CellNuvo appears to have gone out of business, and their CEO/founder is totally flummoxed that anyone would want to buy one of the SIMs that their site right out says it sells.

I did get an email from CellNuvo today, and it is someone other than the CEO, and he is as confused/addled about his business as the founder is.

They are located in Chicago. Give me Filipino customer service any time!

    10. Sprint has more than 8 part numbers, and there can be multiple SKUs for many phones. One Sprint repair facility and store I visited showed me their software. A tech entered the IMEI for my iPhone 6S and he showed me the 4 different SKUs they had in stock. Their software did not even show the part number, and their inventory did not track the part numbers.

Example: I have used both SIMGLW416C and SIMGLW436C SIMs in my iPhone 5S and 6S.

Enter iPhone 6, 6S, SE or 7 model on Ting SIM selector and they refer to it as a Z1 (Ting number):
"The Z1 SIM supports all unlocked devices that are compatible with Sprint. Officially, it's all iPhones 5C and up, iPads (Air, Air 2, Air Refresh, Mini 3 & 4 and iPad Pros), Pixel/Pixel XL, Nexus 5 and up, Moto G4/G4 Play/G4 Plus and the unlocked Galaxy S7/S7 edge."

Enter an iPhone 5C or 5S on Ting and it returns a C6 SIM:
"The nano SIM C6 supports these specific device(s) on Ting:
      • HTC 10
      • Samsung Galaxy S6, S7, S6 Edge, S7 Edge
      • Samsung Galaxy Note 5
      • Samsung Galaxy Tab 4
      • Apple iPad Air, Air 2 and iPad Pro
      • Apple iPad mini (Retina)
      • Apple iPhone 5c, 5s, 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, and SE
Compatibility note: This nano SIM card is compatible with North American-models of the device(s) listed above."

The iPhone 5 uses a different part number. Ting calls it a C1 and the Sprint part number is SIMGLW406R. I have used this part number in the original Moto X and an iPhone 5.
"The nano SIM C1 supports these specific devices on Ting:
      • iPhone 5
      • iPad Mini
      • HTC One E8
      • HTC One M8
      • Moto X (1st Gen)
Compatibility note: This nano SIM card is compatible with North American-models of the devices listed above."

      Delete
    11. You can also use Sprint SIMOLW506C and SIMOLW416C part numbers in iPhones from 5C/S and newer. Note the O instead of a G in the part number.

    1. Use a credit card if you want the rewards points or you're buying online.

Use cash if you don't want your husband to know you have a burner phone.

I never use a debit card. Too much potential for bad juju.

You cannot do that. Sprint requires exact specific "sims" for specific devices. These are not like GSN sims.

  11. Prepaid Phone News used to have a well-deserved reputation as a reliable source of information. But it has recently degenerated into an unreliable self-contradictory mess. On March 10, Christine Torralba (a PPN reporter) reported that the new GoPhone top-level plan is priced at $60. On March 15, Dennis Bournique (the PPN publisher) reported that the same plan is priced at $65. On March 16, Torralba once again reported that the same plan is priced at $60. The truth is that plan is priced at $65. AT&T offers a $5 discount to customers who choose the autopay option. But new GoPhone customers on that plan must pay the full $65 for the first billing cycle. The $5 autopay discount is only available to them starting with the payment for the second billing cycle. The two Torralba articles did not mention the full price of the plan or anything about the $5 optional autopay discount.

@Dennis Bournique: Now that I have made you aware of the situation, are you going to publish a correction at the bottom of those two Torralba articles?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've updated both of Christine's posts to indicate that the plan prices are $45 and $65 without AutoPay.

      Delete
    2. @Dennis Bournique: Your use of the word "updated" (in your "March 20, 2017 at 2:20 PM" comment above) is misleading. The GoPhone $65 plan has not changed at all. So what you did today was not updating; it was correcting mistakes -- mistakes that you as the publisher should have caught before you allowed those two Torralba articles to be published. Instead, you allowed those two articles to be published with blatantly wrong prices, and you did not bother correcting them until many days later.

I must admit, there have been countless typos, even in the article titles, which has had me scratching my head. Nonetheless, I appreciate the venue here, and have contributed tips to Dennis in a reciprocal manner to him and his readers.

  13. for all of us who are not paying to subscribe to PPN prices of items can change at any time it is appreciated the prices are given when the new posting comes out on Sunday even later that day the price can change to each one of us when looking at an item that interests us to click on the item and then follow up for ourselves without Dennis or Christine wasting time clicking on countless items continually for the site to be up to the minute. we can do that if we want but it is asking too much of others along with all this free information we are getting. the same with a plan correct it if you like without all the derogatory comments often directed at Christine which makes it appear they are coming from a single individual for some unknown reason that goes by me from ek
