Updated 3/27: Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Mar 26 - Apr 1

ZTE Trek 2 HD Tablet
Welcome to the latest edition of Prepaid Phone News' Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones found today online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the unlocked AT&T ZTE Trek 2 HD K88 8" LTE Tablet for $74.99 in "new" open box condition, from eBay seller qualitycellz. Use 20% off code C20SPRING to bring the price down to $59.99. The code is good through Monday, 3/27.

The Trek 2, which launched on AT&T last July for $179, has very good specs for an inexpensive tablet. There's an 8" 1280x800px screen, Snapdragon 617 SOC, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB of internal storage and a memory card slot. It runs a mostly stock version of Android Marshmallow and supports dual band 2.4GHz & 5GHz WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/a. For cellular use it supports UMTS 850, 1900 and 2100 and LTE bands 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 12, 29, and 30 which covers all of AT&T and T-Mobile's current bands and three major non-US bands; UMTS 2100 and LTE 1 and 7.

All in all, this looks like a great deal on a modern, major brand, midrange 8" LTE tablet.

  1. Ting still has the best unlocked Moto G4 Play, G4 16GB and G4 Plus 64GB prices. 5 weeks in a row. $99, $169, $249. The LG G5 is $349.

  2. The ZTE Trek 2 HD might possibly be too big to be a phone, but I'd be willing to give this form factor a try.

  3. I have this tablet in conjunction with my T-Mobile SIM which seems to work well, however I couldn't find any setting related to hotspot anywhere , but I downloaded hotspot pro and to my surprise it works, so if this device doesn't have a hotspot setting how can an app give it one, or is hotspot not a hardware item but a software one, any insight?

    1. Hotspot managed by software using the WiFi hardware in the phone. Carriers can disable it and apps can re-enable it on some phones and carriers.

  5. I've been using this tablet for a couple weeks, mainly with my T-Mobile SIM, great battery life I just hope it keeps it's capacity for a year, you will definitely notice screen pixelation, no doubt about it, maybe that's the trade off for seemingly good battery life. The screen responsiveness is average, I did hit it with a spray of amonia free Windex , so maybe it was film residue. Build quality surprised me, virtually zero flex.a good little tablet for under $100. IMHO

    3. The ebay vendor for the ZTE Trek 2 HD K88, "Quality Cellz" calls it a phone. A user review on that site says his girlfriend uses it to make calls also.

I'm confused, is this a "Phablet" that can make calls, too, or just a tablet?

    4. eBay QualityCellz calls the ZTE tablet a tablet. I agree that you are confused.

    5. The Trek 2 supports AT&T Number Sync which lets AT&T post paid customers with an HD Voice capable phone and HD Voice enabled on their account make VoLTE calls from the tablet that show their AT&T mobile number on caller ID. See NumberSync for Android Tablets - Overview - Wireless Support for more information.

The Trek 2 doesn't support traditional circuit switched phone calls. You could use Hangouts or another VoIP app to make VoIP calls using the tablet.

  11. My closest local Walmart clearanced-out the Phoenix 2 for $35, the Walmart ten miles north had them for $25 but were long gone by time I got there. Not sure how Walmart figures out pricing, but this one is worth checking into on Brickseek as some stores have these cheaper than others.

And...that ZTE tablet is great for the price...but...you forgot to mention the free Chinese backdoor that is also included.

    1. Yes, for aiding terrorists.

      Delete
    2. If that were really it, the entire Democratic-media establishment would go bankrupt from opposing Trump's terror ban.

It's just because they're a Chinese multinational doing Chinese multinational things, like peddling their wares to whoever will buy them.

We just don't happen to like or get along with some of their other customers...which is something literally anyone can say about every business they frequent.

Honestly, if they really want to stick it China, they should get going with those import taxes and trade renegotiations instead of fining one of many Chinese companies as a purely symbolic gesture.

      Delete
    3. ZTE directly aided the terrorist regime in Iran (and also North Korea), which is why they got fined.

The Iranian government explicitly wants to kill all Americans and all Jews. I don't think either is a good idea.

Import taxes steal from average Americans, so I oppose such "solutions" which are based on legalized theft. We need lower taxes, not higher.

  16. I just bought the ZTE Trek 2 to replace my aging Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. My thoughts, based on about a week's use:

    - Build quality is solid. It's noticably faster than my Samsung, but it's also a bit thicker and heavier. So it's less comfortable to hold for extended periods.

    - Battery life is good, but not spectacular

    - Front-facing speakers are a nice change. They're nice and loud, but unfortunately sound pretty shitty. Watching videos? Plan on using headphones or a bluetooth speaker.

    - The screen is less touch-sensitive than any of my 3 previous tablets. Depending on the app, you've really got to pop that thing to get response. Makes typing a bit hit or miss, too.

    - For $60 it's a good value imho.

    Hope this helps.

      Grow up!"

      You're missing the point.

If you're committing a punchable offense while hiding behind laws that protect you from getting yours, it grates away at the civility that a functioning society depends upon.

That's why being a jackass "just because you can" is typically frowned upon.

If you can't even spare the person next to you the sound of your "Top 10" videos or supposedly private conversations with your friends/family, then you're basically just noise garbage littering the public domain.

    4. Ummm. this isn't the Wild West. There's no such thing as a "punchable offense". If you act on the perception that there is, you might end up in prison. And rightfully so.

After all, it is a nation of laws, not hot-heads flailing fists.

    5. "Dude! Spot on! Awesome comment! I couldn't agree more."

Yet another sociopath who has issues who probably shouldn't go out in public. What Anon 6:36 advocates would put you in jail in all 50 states. As it should be.

Again, if someone is watching and listening to their tablet, ignore it.

    6. While maybe not a punchable offense it is definitely worthy of a Vulcan neck pinch.

    7. "Again, if someone is watching and listening to their tablet, ignore it."

It's impossible to completely tune out noise pollution.

That's literally why there are statues in the law addressing extreme cases.

There have even been studies confirming that annoying the people around you annoys the people around you.

It's only because we live in a freedomless police state that people are allowed to passive aggressively pester without fear of reprisal, but there's not a right-minded individual on this planet who'd consider the outlawing of deterrents to poor behavior a "good thing."

      Delete
    8. Engaging in violent crime over something falsely imagined and isn't "annoying" is never a "good thing", and there is no way that arrest for commiting such assault is a "police state" intrusion. In fact, that is what police are there for in the first place.

You seem to moan that socirty I'd "freedomless" because you can't damage people for doing nothing.

Again, if you don't like it, ignore it. That's what adults do.

    1. "Is a 3.5 years old iPhone 5s still a viable option?"

If it ever was? I use both an iPhone 5s and recent Androids. IOS is less-refined and straightjacketed compared to Android, and "Siri" is so ancient and un-updated they might as well rename her "Wilma" after the caveman wife... and this is true on all iPhones.

The real killer is that there are several apps that I need that I can find on Android but not the iPhone.

But the iPhone 5S has a primitive back-of-the-pack camera by today's standards and lacks "force touch" and is at times painfully tiny to use. Problems you simply don't have with an iPhone 7+.
