Updated 3/11: Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Mar 5 - Mar 11

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' weekly Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've found today online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the Verizon Prepaid Motorola Moto G Play LTE Android phone with $50 Verizon Prepaid service credit for $69.99 at HSN. Take an extra $20 off by paying withe Visa Checkout. That means you get the phone and $50 worth of airtime for $49.99. The phone also comes with a generic case and car charger.

The G Play is a special Verizon-only version of the Motorola Moto G4 Play. Unlike the G4 Play, which is a universal phone that works on all four US national networks, the G Play is a CDMA/LTE device only that's locked to Verizon Prepaid. In the past some users were able to get this phone unlocked with an eBay code and use it on a Verizon MVNO like Boom Mobile. Currently there don't seem to be any eBay sellers who claim they can unlock the G Play.

The G Play's specs include a 5 inch 720p screen, removable battery, SD card slot, Snapdragon 410 SOC, 2 GB RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. The 8 MP main camera has autofocus, an LED flash and supports 1080p video capture. That's a lot of phone for the price of essentially free with the airtime credit and Visa Checkout.

The $20 Visa checkout offer is good on all of HSN's phones and phone plus airtime bundles such as the Boost Mobile HTC One A9 LTE Android phone with $50 service credit  for $129.99 with Visa Checkout, or the TracFone LG Sunset (AT&T network) LTE Android phone with 1200 minutes, texts and MBs of data and one year of service for $49.95 with Visa Checkout. Scroll down to the HSN section for more deals.

  2. Everybody should know before buying you can't move your apps to the SD card on the Verizon Prepaid G Play. I'm not happy about that. It might be a Marshmallow 6.0 thing.

    1. Unless you use lots of huge apps, if you move your photos, videos and music to the card, the 8 GB or so of internal storage should be enough.

With stock Android Marshmallow or Nougat, you can only move apps to the SD card if you format it adoptable storage, which Motorola calls internal storage. See Moto G Play (4th Gen.) - Using an SD card - Moto G Play (4th Gen.) for more information.

Adoptable storage makes the SD card an extension of internal memory. It has some disadvantages, the main one being that the card is encrypted and can't be read by other devices. It can also be buggy, I don't recommend adoptable unless you actually fill up internal. See Android 6.0 can treat SD cards as internal storage... at a cost - Liliputing and Guide for those struggling with 'Adopt SD as Internal Storage' in Marshmallow - xda-developers for more about the option and it's pitfalls.

  3. Found one Ebay seller who has the following statement on their listing: "For the Verizon version of Prepaid Moto G4 Play, the phone has to be activated with a Verizon Prepaid SIM for 30 days before the voice call can work. Otherwise, just the text and data plan will work." Haven't seen that claim before.

    1. I've seen that. I think it's to discourage people from trying to unlock the Verizon version and use it on GSM. It's not accurate. Although you could use the phone on GSM after unlocking, you'll only get 4G LTE data on bands 2, 4 or 5. There is no support for GSM 2G or 3G, so you won't be able to make or receive cellular voice calls. Someone reported texts work, but I don't see how. You're better off getting the unlocked retail version unless you want to use it on Verizon Prepaid or a Verizon MVNO. I was able to unlock 2 with no problem using a code purchased on eBay for $1.99 each. That allows you to use an activated SIM from a Verizon MVNO, but you won't be able to activate directly on the Verizon MVNO because the IMEI won't be whitelisted.

      Delete
    2. I should have added some more context to my post. I was browsing Ebay for someone who would provide an unlock code for this phone and found that statement. Nothing was noted on the surface of the listings for an unlock code for this device. Maybe they've all gone into hiding:) as Dennis indicated or they do it on the sly:) I've unlocked 2 of these phones and used already activated Verizon MVNO SIMS in them. I'm just wondering if that is even possible anymore.

  5. So what is the official Verizon ransom, $'s and/or days, to free up the Verizon G4 play for use on a Verizon MVNO?

Is it money and days or just one or the other will satisfy?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Phone must be activated on Verizon Prepaid service for 1 year from original activation date OR until payments in the amount specified on the back of the Phone-in-a-Box package are added to the Prepaid account.•Once either of these criteria is satisfied, you can contact Verizon at *611 from your Verizon Wireless Prepaid phone, or (888) 294-6804, and Verizon will provide you with programming instructions so you can unlock your phone. The very latest Verizon Prepaid 4G Phone-in-the-Box Prepaid phones e.g LG K8 v a $75 ransom.

    2. So, what is the $ amt. re "payments in the amount specified on the back of the Phone-in-a-Box package are added to the Prepaid account."??

Anyone know what $ amt. is on the Verizon moto g4 play box?

      Delete
    3. So you would have to activate and pay the first month on Verizon (what is the cheapest plan, is there a $30 one?) Then the $50 will get applied for the second bill cycle, then it should be free to use on a VZW MVNO?

Do I have the scenario correct?

      Delete
    4. Probably, assuming that Verizon considers the free $50 credit a payment. The cheapest Verizon Prepaid smartphone plan is $40 BTW.

  7. Dennis, this is just asking you to take a wild guess, or maybe you may know..but now that Sprint has increased it's hotspot for their unlimited customers to 10g a month, do you think they may for Boost as well? I'm thinking that now because Virgins new unlimited plan has much better optimization, they can at least give Boost' s unlimited a perk. One can hope, I guess.

    1. Not directly. According to the HSN listing,

"Offer includes $50 service credit applied toward a monthly Verizon prepaid rate plan.
You must activate and fund initial month of service in order to receive $50 service credit.
$50 service credit will be automatically applied to your account toward the next billing cycle after the 1st billing cycle is complete."

You could activate the G Play, pay for one month, wait for the $50 to be applied and then swap a different phone on to the account.

    4. Between the three the ZTE is the only one that lacks a removable battery so I'd forget about that one but that's just me. It's a tough call between the Samsung and the LG.

      Delete

    6. When is the last time you had to replace the battery on a phone, how much did the replacement cost, did it work properly, and how old was the phone/battery? I used to not want to buy phones without replaceable batteries, but decided not to let that limit me a few years back.

    7. " I used to not want to buy phones without replaceable batteries, but decided not to let that limit me a few years back. "

Same here. Not having a replaceable battery is bad design. However, there are plenty of other design flaws that I had to weigh against this one.

It's like the way the companies forced "no keyboards" on us. The keyboards (horizonal slider, much better than Blackberry ones) in the Droid 3 and 4 still run circles around the lousy cost-cutting onscreen keyboards that rule now.

But if I were to use a Droid 4 now, I'd be typing 3 times as fast as on an iPhone 7+ screen, but everything else would be quite miserable.

You can't fight city hall, and you can't fight it when companies forced bad ideas on everyone.

    8. The MetroPCS site lists the LG Stylo 2 Plus at $99 so I assume dealers have to match that price. With the port-in credit it should be free. The question is the LG faster than the Samsung J7 or not?

  16. None of the independent Boost dealers in my area have the LG X Power or Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge free with port in. They claim ignorance about the promotion.

Does anyone have a link or a screenshot I can show them?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Take a screenshot on your own from Dennis website. I was told that these promotions go by choice of the dealer. You cannot access their sources for dealers eyes only

      Delete
    2. Several times a month the Sprint Prepaid Group sends an electronic newsletter called "The Playbook" to all Boost dealers. The Playbook lists all current dealer promotions.

Dealers anonymously send me screenshots of new deals from The Playbook which I use to update this post. I've been asked by my sources not to republish or share the screenshots so I don't.

Hint, If you do a web search for "The Playbook - External Dealers" (including the quotes) you can find leaked copies of many older editions of The Playbook.

If Sprint marketing had an ounce of sense they would list their dealer-only promotions online for all to see like Cricket and MetroPCS do. That would put pressure on Boost dealers to honor the promotions, increasing sales for both Boost and for their dealers.

    1. Do web searches for "Snapdragon 430 Geekbench" and "Snapdragon 430 Antutu". Then do the same substituting whatever model Exynos the J7 uses for Snapdragon 430 and compare the results.

      Delete
    2. I'm going out on a limb here Dennis. I don't understand how to do that nor what it would mean end result. Could be just me but I think they just wanted a Quote in your opinion of which is faster :)

    3. I answer questions when I know the answer. In this case I didn't so told the OP how I would research the question. I gave them search strings that should return Antutu and Geekbench CPU benchmarks for the two SOCs. For those two benchmarks a higher score indicates a faster CPU.

Surely everyone knows how to enter a search string in Google, Bing or Duck, Duck Go.

The LG stylo 2 seems to have the inability to save apps to sd Card. Otherwise it has some of the best features. I haven't one complaint about the j7. It's a classic Samsung with the 2gb of ram, runs smooth and fast. Camera is good. It is a perfect phone. I like the stylo more because I feel it has more features. The tap on feature, dual screen, quick memo. Plus the stylus but only disappointed that you have less storage space because the sd Card is not able to save your apps.
