New $50 Credit and Free Phones for Switching to Cricket


AT&T's Cricket Wireless is once again offering a $50 bill credit if port a number to Cricket from any carrier except AT&T. To qualify, customers need to port a number to a new line of service on a Cricket plan priced at $30/month or higher and keep the line active for at least 45 days. The credit will be received within 60 days of activation.  This promotion is available only at Cricket stores, not online and may require paying an activation fee of up to $25 per line.

Cricket isn't saying how long this promotion will last but it's repeat of an offer that Cricket ran from Feb. 25 to March 6.

In addition to the bill credit, Cricket is also offering free phones to customers who port numbers to Cricket. The available phones are the Alcatel Streak, ZTE Sonata 3, Samsung Amp 2 and LG Fortune subject to availability. As with the bill credit offer, this one requires porting a number from another carrier (ports from AT&T excluded) to a new Cricket line of service and is available at Cricket dealers only.

  2. Takes too long to receive the credit, especially since their service went down the drain.

    You might not even last 60 days before getting tired of their technical and network problems.

    Their perks refferal doesn't get credited in a timely manner either.

    There's not even any point to it, as the bill credit can only be used if you actually stay with the service.

    Honestly, they should just hop on the bandwagon and offer a $50 discount for new plan activations online, and skip all the jumping through hoops that customers now have to do.

  4. Agreed with second comment. Network technical becomes worse and worse, even it is on ATT, customer service also worthless. Gone with GoPhone is way much better, refill account with airtimeclub.com is wonderful.

  6. Agreed with second comment. Network technical becomes worse and worse, even it is on ATT, customer service also worthless. Gone with GoPhone is way much better, refill account with airtimeclub.com is wonderful.

    2. Jon, where's your proof of prioritization? I've yet to see any MVNO provide "solid" proof of prioritization. It's generally accepted,yes, but where's the proof?

T-Mobile acknowledges data deprioritization in the MetroPCS T&Cs: "To differentiate the services we sell, at times and at locations where there are competing customer demands for network resources, we give the data traffic of customers who choose T-Mobile-branded services precedence over the data traffic of customers who choose non-T-Mobile-branded services such as MetroPCS."

      If T-Mobile de-prioritizes data prepaid brands and MVNOs, I suspect the other operators do too.

      Regarding voice deprioritization, I seen claims that except for giving first responders priority in emergencies, it's prohibited by FCC rules. I've been unable to find confirmation of that on the FCC site however.

    4. Cricket uses proxies to throttle and deprioritize, with speeds clocking in at 1mbps when the network gets busy.

      That was a year ago, before spontaneous outages (like H2O's) became a thing.

      It seems that either the network is too overburdened to handle deprioritized customers, or spotty service on lower priority MVNOs is a feature rather than a bug.

      The fact is, Cricket's service is significantly worse than GoPhone's, regardless of whether it's because of increasing demand and/or lack of technical investment.

    5. Dennis, re: voice de-prioritization, doesn't Title II of the Communications Act apply? Specifically, section 202a which says:

      "It shall be unlawful for any common carrier to make any unjust or unreasonable discrimination in charges, practices, classifications, regulations, facilities, or services for or in
      connection with like communication service, directly or indirectly, by any means or device, or to make or give any undue or unreasonable preference or advantage to any particular person, class of persons, or locality, or to subject any particular person, class of persons, or locality to any undue or unreasonable prejudice or disadvantage."

    6. I agree that clause in Title II appears to prohibit deprioritization of voice which has long been classified as a common carrier service subject to Title II.

      However, since June, 2015 broadband data has been subject to Title II rules and that hasn't stopped operators from deprioritizing data. The carriers appear to be testing the limits of the FCC's regulation and so far they have gotten away with it. Of course, the FCC is about to roll back the reclassification of broadband providers as common carriers so that will soon be a moot point. But if carriers got away with deprioritizing data when it was subject to Title II, I wouldn't be surprised if they are trying to do it with voice too.

    7. I recently ran across this on voice calls. I have 2 postpaid lines and 2 prepaid lines. Coverage is great with all 4 carriers in Houston. Postpaid to postpaid, phone calls ring on the first ring. Prepaid to post paid - phones ring on the first ring.

      Postpaid to prepaid - phones do not ring to after the second ring. Even used postpaid and prepaid from same carrier - same result. I have tested this multiple times throughout the day the past couple of months. Same result. Even tried different phones, no difference.

      Coincidence - I don't think so.

    8. That's a difference in call setup time, not deprioritization. Call setup time varies depending on the way the call is routed.

      If the carrier was deprioritizing prepaid voice, a higher percentage of prepaid than postpaid users would not be able to make or receive calls at all when the network was overloaded.

    9. (I am anon821) Common carrier status is in flux for sure, but I don't think it should really affect voice prioritization too much given how the market has moved to people not making a ton of calls anymore and a sizable number (if not majority) of plans now coming with unlimited minutes.

      Plus, if calls to 911 aren't exempt from de-prioritization, carriers/networks could catch some bad PR should such a call get de-prioritized and something bad were to happen. The alleged 911 TMO call failures to me got an unexpected amount of coverage in the press, especially when it wasn't completely established what had happened.

    Cricket is a excellent value for 5 line family plan ( 5 lines for $100 /mo).

    Howver, this promo is "available at Cricket dealers only" and not available online as well , I would pass.

    3. Most unreliable except for T-MOBILE. I recently switched from Cricket to TMO, and miss the blanket of 8 to 10 mbps coverage I had with the lil bug. It JUST WORKED.



      With TMO, I now get coverage from 0.1 Mbps to 5 Mbps usually, with rare spikes of 20 Mbps.

      I'd rather have solid 8mbps+ always, rather than much slower with a rare chance of 20 Mbps.

  13. Last month I exceeded 22.4 gigs on my unlimited Cricket plan. Didn't notice any slowdown in data speed for the remaining 3 days. Almost no issues with Cricket service except when going over the GGate bridge.
