Walmart Family Mobile Again Increases High Speed Data On Multiple Plans

For the second time in 6 weeks, TracFone's Walmart Family Mobile has increased the amount of data included with most of its plans.

  • The $29.88 plan gets a bump from 2 to 3 GB of high speed data. Before May 3 this plan only included 1 GB of high speed data.
  • The 39.88 plan jumps from 5 to 6 GB.
  • The $49.99 plan sees an increase from 13 to 15 GB. $49.88 plan customers are also entitled to a free $7 VUDU movie rental credit each month. Before May, this plan only came with 10 GB of high speed data

There are no changes this month to the $24.88 plan which got bumped up from no data to unlimited data (first 1 GB high speed) iast month. As before, all plans include unlimited voice minutes, unlimited messaging and unlimited 64 kbps throttled data after the first 1 to 15 GB of data at high speeds.

Walmart Family Mobile is sold exclusively at Walmart stores and online. It's a T-Mobile MVNO, and in spite of the Walmart branding, is owned and operated by TracFone, which acquired the brand from T-Mobile in September, 2016.

I'm not sure what prompted Family Mobile to update its plans twice in barely a month. But last month TracFone switched Family Mobile accounts TracFone billing systems to its own platform. The switch caused billing and data issues for some customers, you can see some of the complaints in the comments on this post. Maybe the data increases are part of an effort by Family Mobile to acquire new customers to replace the ones lost  due to migration issues.

    1. No, they don't.

Family Mobile is a Tracfone brand, which will scare away exactly the type of informed customers who'd know about both the data increases and their recent switch to prepaid billing.

Everyone else will be hard pressed to even remember they exist.

Meanwhile, Cricket has brand recognition and low-information subscribers to fall back on.

    2. At this time, Cricket "matches" by having a lot more coverage.

    3. Unless you really NEED the extra data switching from cricket passable CS and at&t network to WFM t-mo network and America Movil / trashfone / Carlos slime customer disservice circus is not an attractive proposition. I don't think cricket will feel a lot of pressure from this.

    4. Match what? The abusive CS of a tracfone brand or the 0 signal areas of native only T-Mobile network? Both?

    5. Anon1216, you overestimate the number of informed customers and underestimate the brand recognition of Walmart.

    6. Walmart is a chain store on every corner.

Family Mobile is a tiny section tucked away in the back of the store.

      There's a difference.

  2. Regarding, '0 signal areas of native T-Mobile network', I thought FM roams albeit not fully like TMo postpaid. Can someone confirm?

    1. Tracfone version of WFM is t-mo native network only. No roaming.

    2. The coverage map on the WFM site shows partner (roaming) coverage. Are you a WFM customer who can confirm that you lost roaming when TracFone took over?

    3. Yes, family member who often travels rural areas around the intersection of NY, CT & MA often was roaming, now 0 signal in same areas. Maybe the phone needs reprogramming but the CS chat was clueless, no help.

  3. Do these prices include taxes and fees? I know Cricket's do.

  4. Where are the "Family Plans?" I only see individual line rates on Walmart Family Mobile website with no options of adding lines for reduced rates.
