Updated 7/25: Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week: Jul 23 - Jul 29

Welcome to the latest edition of Prepaid Phone News' Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week feature. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've been able to find online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the Cricket Coolpad Canvas 16 GB LTE Android phone on sale this week for $39.99 (reg $49.99) at Best Buy. This phone has by far the best specs I've seen at this price point. Features include Android 7.0 Nougat, a 5.5 inch 1080 x 720 px HD screen, Snapdragon 425 processor, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, SD card support, dual band Wi-Fi b/g/n and 8 MP rear and 5 MP front cameras.

The Canvas supports quad band GSM; 850, 1900 and 2100 Mhz UMTS and LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 12 and 30. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be rootable and the only 3rd party unlock I've found  for it costs $30!

  1. Iphone 6 Verizon Straight talk is unlocked out the box? Anyone know.

    1. Every phone from TracFone is locked. If may work on another TracFone brand like Total Wireless but not on a non-TracFone brand.

      Delete
    2. Straight Talk iPhone 6 sold at Walmart has a SIM Kit pocket sleeve stuck to the back of the box. The sleeve shows BOTH Straight Talk and Total Wireless logos on it. so if you buy this phone and use the enclosed sim you a gonna be on the V Network.

    3. Simple Mobile is a tracfone brand on the tmobile network so would the iphone se for $159 work on the total wireless or straight talk verizon network since the iphone se has the required bands built in but not activated out of the box or are they activated and useable?

  3. I believe all TracFone smartphones will work on all TracFone brands, for instance a net10 TMobile based Sim should work on a locked simple mobile phone, I'm not positive about the iPhones, specifically the SE because simple mobile and total wireless use T-mobile and Verizon exclusively, I'm not sure if a net10 TMobile Sim will work in a total wireless (Verizon) iPhone SE. it's hard to tell which model each sub-human brand uses.

  4. Anybody know what "BL" means as far as model number on straight talk, net 10 phones, I'm pretty sure it's GSM, bit at&t or T-mobile, or are there models that will accept a TracFone based T-mobile or at&t SIM on the same device, it's confusing!!

    1. The "BL" models are sold with either a T-Mobile or an AT&T network SIM. I think "B" stands for "Both" amd "L" for "LTE". "VL" models are Verizon LTE.

    2. Thanks Dennis, I didn't even think of B meaning both! Makes sense though, the model I'm looking at is a LG fiesta, I know it's available on pretty much all of TracFones's brand, and I know there's a Verizon version also, the "BL" model is available on simple mobile, and it appears that it has lte bands 2,4,12, in addition to band 5. Which I assumed band 5 meant at&t, but my T-Mobile branded Galaxy Grand Prime also has band 5! TracFone truly confuses me, you really have to keep hammering down to figure their which network code, even more so if a particular phone can technically run on Verizon, att, and T-Mobile!

Are there any buggy issues or leggy performance issues known to coolpad products?
Saw a coolpad in the past & wasn't impressed with its color in pics? Anyone else have experience with the brand to know if issue or just maybe that particular phone?
      THANKS DENNIS:

    1. No you can't. Cricket device need to unlocked.

    2. my experience was that you can use a cricket sim in an att prepid phone, but cricket phne accepts only cricket. likewise, you can move sim card on t-mobile prepaid to any unlocked or t mobile phone, but metro pcs sim is married to a metro phone and can't be moved. i was not able to use a metro sin in tmobile prepaid phone. at first , it worked but the next time i started up the phone, it did not.

    3. You can use a MetroPCS SIM in an unlocked phone or a T-Mobile locked phone but you have to register the new IMEI with Metro.

  7. Any deals on the unlocked Moto E4 XT1768 . Not interest in the Amazon ad model.

    1. I got another Moto with the Amazon ad model. It's not as bad as I thought. In fact, it is so innocuous that I don't see why I'd ever bother to "pay them off" for $50 to get rid of the ads.

If anything, I feel a little sorry for Amazon and its poor ad algorithm: the lock-screen ads contain stuff I'd never buy anywhere, let alone anything connected to my massive years long record of Amazon purchases.

    2. In don't even notice the adds, a text message is more intrusive.

    3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't bootloader unlock the Amazon subsidized phones through Moto/Lenovo like you can with a factory unlocked one, which means you you're stuck with however many feature / security updates Moto/Lenovo is willing to put out (12 months?). Those $50 buys you a lifetime of LineageOS updates.

  9. What disappoints me is that many of the carriers offer a phone for free if the customer is porting a number, but make a new customer not porting a number pay for the same phone.

I understand that it must give the carrier the satisfaction of stealing a customer from another carrier, but, either way, it's still a NEW line with an associated revenue stream that's coming to the new carrier. Why should they care?

In last week's Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week, there was a phone from MetroPCS that I bought for $49 (after rebate) that the article mentions would have been free if I had ported a number from another carrier to MetroPCS. They are still getting the monthly fee from me, though I did not port a number.

One idea that occurred to me is that the carriers may have data that say that a customer who is porting a number is less likely to abruptly cancel the service, so perhaps the carrier can rely on a longer revenue stream. Are YOU going to stay with a carrier that has bad service, regardless of your having ported in a number? Perhaps the fact that you paid zero for the phone will make you MORE likely to leave since you have no investment to worry about.

If you read my comments on the "Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week: Jul 16 - Jul 22", you will see I had a horrible experience just activating the darn phone. Nothing worked right! If MetroPCS turns out to continue to have such bad customer service I will be saying goodbye to them very soon, and, port or no port, they will have lost a customer and the monthly payments.

    1. The "port-in" subsidy is probably what's required to get people to deal with the hassle of porting-out. It is truly a pain in the backside. New lines have no such barriers to entry.

      Delete
    2. Besides the hassle and issues that can occur with porting, people generally avoid change or the unknown. Their current carrier is a known. The subsidy is likely there as it requires more incentive to get someone to change carriers than just start up a new account.

  10. I find it hard to believe, but AT&T's website is even worse than any MVNO's I've dealt with (and most MVNO sites are terrible). When I try to buy a BYOD SIM for AT&T Prepaid it asks for an IMEI and no matter what number I put in (all for unlocked GSM phones compatible with AT&T and currently on *no* plan with anyone) it throws some error about not being able to have pre-paid and post-paid items in the cart at the same time.

So there doesn't seem to be a way to actually purchase a SIM for BYOP.

  12. Have AT&T Prepaid changed their unlock policy for non AT&T Wireless Customers as part of the rebranding? I looked at their website and it says they require six months of service now, even for non customers.

If so, it's a double shame since T-Mobile Prepaid phones are impossible to find at retail these days, and the website wants $95 for the cheapest handset.
