Updated 8/10: Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week: Aug 6 - Aug 12

Honor 8 Sapphire Blue
Welcome to the latest edition of Prepaid Phone News' Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week feature. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've been able to find online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the unlocked Huawei Honor 8 32 GB LTE Android phone on sale for $259.00 at Amazon.

The Honor 8 which lists for $399.99 is based on Huawei's P9 2016 flagship. It uses the same Huawei Kirin 950 SOC as the P9, which delivers roughly the same performance as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 used in the Galaxy S7. Other specs include 4 GB of RAM, a 5.2 inch, 1920x1080px IPS display, a fast and accurate fingerprint sensor, NFC, USB-C, quick charging support and dual band 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac WiFi. There are dual 12 MP main cameras and an 8 MP front facing camera. The 3000 mAh battery is not user replaceable.

The Honor 8 supports  quad-band GSM, UMTS/HSPA+ bands 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8 and LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17 and 20 for compatibility with AT&T and T-Mobile and most international GSM operators. T-Mobile VoLTE is supported, Wi-Fi calling is not.

  1. At $259 this seems like a pretty good deal. How is Honor with security patches. Also does anyone know of decent phones at lower price points that get semi regular security patches? The Nokia 6 is close, but I don't think I can do the low end processor.

    1. Huawei says they will provide updates for two years from the phone's August 2016 launch date. The updates seem to be only every three or four months however unlike the monthly updates that Pixels and Samsung flagships get. My wife's Honor 8 got Nougat in February and an update at the beginning of June that included the April security update.

What Samsung flagship phones do you have that get monthly updates?????

    3. My 2014 AT&T Note 4 still gets monthly updates. See Software update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (N910A) - AT&T for a list of the updates.

I believe that all US carrier branded Notes and Galaxies get monthly updates for at least 2 years.

    4. Dennis, what about the people who have refurbished Samsung flagship phones from Best Buy that are still on security patches from May2016 as mentioned from persons with galaxy note 5 & s7Edge that are on tracfone?

    5. Getting updates on MVNOs can be problematic. With carrier branded phones, carriers can limit access to OTA updates to users on the carrier's service. AT&T and Verizon do that, Sprint doesn't. I don't know about T-Mobile.

For an AT&T branded phone to get updates it has to have an active SIM with AT&T's MCC/MNC (310/410). TracFone AT&T SIMs are 310/410 so they do get updates, but an AT&T phone on Cricket, T-Mobile or FreedomPop LTE won't because they have the wrong MCC/MNC.

On some phones including Samsungs, Verizon limits updates to phones on branded Verizon service so MVNO users, including TracFone Verizon users don't get OTA updates. But the Verizon Update Assitant (Samsung) Windows PC app can be used to update Verizon Samsungs on any network or no network.

Sprint phones get OTA updates regardless of network.

    6. "For an AT&T branded phone to get updates it has to have an active SIM with AT&T's MCC/MNC (310/410)...but an AT&T phone on Cricket... won't "

When I had a current model Samsung Galaxy originally AT&T but on Cricket, I could get it updates by going go the Samsung lagoon at the local Best Buy, and the Samsung drone would plug the phone directly into a laptop loaded with (or with at least access to) all the Samsung updates.

This was last year, and earlier this year.

    7. From my experience, TMO will update without an active SIM. The problem with TMO is getting them to issue an update at all. I am still waiting for Lollipop on my GS4!

    8. We have Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 phones that we use on a Verizon MVNO Red Pocket. On my Windows PC I downloaded the Samsung app Smart Switch and I get security updates. Yesterday I downloaded and updated our phones with the July 2017 security update. Pretty good for a solid phone on Verizon.

  5. Thanks for the responses. I considered iPhone see. But if Apple doesn't make an "se2" there won't be another value option and I'll be back to Android. Blu seems to update their phones once and then forget about them. Motorola seems to always be behind with updates...

  7. I just purchased the Moto G5 Plus on Thursday but I am returning it and getting the cricket iphone se. I checked the forums (my phone stuck with security patch Jan 2017) and I asked if the phone is worth keeping. Mot just the US retail channel but pretty much every where Lenovo is not updating the phones. Most people said that if I had a chance to return it, to do so and get something else. Hardware, phone is nice for the money and so is Android (stock pretty much) it feels good in the hand and it is fast enough. Battery seems to last for a while and the Camera is pretty decent, not great, just decent. If I were putting Lineage OS on this I might keep it but I am disappointed as my first even android device was a Motorola Atrix - this time I do not want a moto phone. You have been warned - check the support forums in Lenovo...

    1. I understand. I have a Moto G5 Plus and am keeping it for a while. The following comparative observations:

The iPhone (all current models) however totally kills all but 2 or 3 Android models when it comes to security and OS updates.

The iPhone SE is way too tiny. While I am fine that such phones exist, I am glad that the standard minimum size for phones is now something just a little above a 5" screen, and "too small to use" phones are now rare instead of dominant.

The Moto G5 Plus camera is indeed just "decent". It is the one thing that makes me want to upgrade the most, as I have been used to top flagship cameras for years before this, and I miss that photo quality.

The Moto G 5th battery is a one star out of five. In this day and age, the fact that we don't have 5 day batteries comes from boneheaded design decisions in boardrooms.

Android lets me run more of the apps I need than IOS, so I would be hard pressed at this time to change to IOS. It would be a downgrade to me. But if you only run apps that are the top 10 email and social media, I am sure the IOS experience is indeed better. I hear the IOS apps like Twitter crash less than the Android versions.

The Moto G 5th sure takes FOREVER to boot. And to add insult to injury, you have to watch what looks like horrid Flash cartoons designed for 8 year olds while it does boot. TWICE. And the last flaw in the bootup is that the shutoff lacks the basic restart option. The long time, however, is excusable since it is a "budget" phone.

  16. I signed up for auto pay on a four line family plan on Boost and got a $5 discount negated by $9.42 in taxes and fees.
If I buy a prepaid Boost card will I still owe these texts and fees?

Who sells Boost refill cards at a discount?

    1. Target seems to be the best option for Boost airtime.
At Target you can get 5% off airtime with a Target Red Card. Target has occasional 5% off sales on airtime (9.75% with Red Card). Target charges taxes at stores but not online.

If you buy a Boost airtime card at any local retailer you will pay taxes. Most online PIN sellers don't offer Boost or charge a surcharge on Boost airtime.

    2. If possible, use a zip code with the lowest tax rate for online refill card orders.

    1. Go to a Boost Mobile bodega or storefront and only pay $3 for their fee and avoid the $9.42 in sales tax when paying in cash.
