Hurricane Harvey has recently been categorized as a Category 4 storm and is making its way towards the coast of Texas. The National Hurricane Center and local officials have already sent out warnings for possible storm surges and up to 40 inches of rain in some places.

In line with this potentially life-threatening storm, T-Mobile announced that it will be making its service free for customers to use so they can stay connected with their loved ones and the local emergency lines.

According to the announcement, both T-Mobile (postpaid and prepaid) and MetroPCS customers who are based in the path of the hurricane will be able to use free calls and texts to anywhere in the U.S. These areas include Texas and Louisiana with the following area codes:

  • Texas: 210, 281, 361, 409, 512, 713, 830, 832, 936, 956, 979
  • Louisiana: 337, 985

The free service is available from August 25th until September 1st.

Stay safe and dry, everyone!

  1. But...T-mobile and Metro already offer free unlimited calls and texts on all their plans.

This is a huge nothing burger.

    1. What they mean is, if you live in those area codes, you will get prorated credit on your account for those free days.

    2. That seems like a pretty important detail to leave out.

    3. According to their press release, T-Mobile is not offering prorated bill credits, just free calls and texts to customers who aren't on unlimited plans. T-Mobile still has a pay as you plan as well as millions of customers on grandfathered prepaid and postpaid plans that do not include unlimited minutes or texts.

  2. The only way this would be a benefit is if the metro pcs phone was not paid in but still allowed you to make calls to those area codes in addition to the normal 911 calls.
