Motorola to Include Android O Update on Moto G4 Plus After All

moto-g4-oreo-update
Last week, Motorola released an entry on its website listing down the different devices that are slated to receive the latest Android Oreo OS upgrade. The list came as a shock to some people, especially since it no longer included the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus. When Motorola launched the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus, it promised to update these devices to Android O. This is why many feel betrayed about the new list.

As pointed out by a Reddit user, Motorola has removed all references on their website where they promised to upgrade the G4 and G4 Plus to Oreo. The company has even removed its tweet on the official Motorola India Twitter page confirming the Oreo upgrade for the Moto G4.

In response to this, Motorola released its own statement to clear the situation:

Since the time of posting this, we have learned of some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for moto g4 Plus. It’s our general practice for the moto g family to get one major OS upgrade per device, so it wasn’t originally planned for Android O. But it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading moto g4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit into our schedule, we’ll update our software upgrade page when we have more info.

So it looks like the G4 Plus (but not the G4 or G4 Play) will be getting the Android O update. The only question is-- when?

    1. ikr?! I remember seeing on Motorola's website the promise of Android Nougat for Moto X Pure 2015 back in January & still NOTHING HAS HAPPENED EXCEPT lenovo CHANGED THE WEBSITE.

moto by lenovo = ZERO INNOVATION, POOR BATTERY, MORE BEZELS, MEDIOCRE CAMERAS, NO UPDATES BEYOND A YEAR.....until now?

YOU BROKE MY MOTO X PURE HEART lenovo! NEVER AGAIN!

  3. At least there is a glimmer of hope for the Moto G4.. The E4 has been pretty much forgotten about and it was just released. It still has May security patch. :\

  4. I love Lenovo and Motorola, but the $149 iPhone SE means I won't have to worry about unpatched phones for the next few years. They stopped updating the X2 just 9 months after launch. RIP Snapdragon 801.

    1. "Gotta give 'em credit, most multinationals would've just let one rip right in their customers' faces."

Ah yes, the paranoid conspiracy about "multinationals". When truth be told, if they didn't make their customers and workers happy, they won't exist. "Letting one rip" in anyone's face is rare behavior indeed.

At least they're making good on their promise to update the Plus, which was pretty much the only model worth getting.

And to be fair, most Android phones don't get even a single update, making Lenovo the exception in a market saturated by one and done devices.

As for the iPhone guy, those updates come at the price of a wholly locked down device.

  7. Motorola may be saying this to spur more sales of remaining models of G4plus units still in the sales channel....they reneged before...

  8. I was going to spring for the newest X, but based on all the comments regarding Moto's lack of updates (promised or otherwise), I just ordered a Samsung S7 for $400 from B&H. I preferred the S8's specs, but just don't like the tall, skinny form factor that is taking over....

  12. I suggest people get a used 2 gen old model.

    Switch every year.

This way you will always be able to get a flagship phone and for a great price, and even though the specs are older, but then... (oh should I start this... start what?... should I start the rant that phones are really not innovating but just making the specs bigger to the point that we cannot tell a difference, should I start that rant.... nah, let them figure it out for themselves... but I will add that different bands can make a huge difference, I suspect that the band 71 for tmobile will make them a big hitter for indoor recpetion)
