  1. Verizon PP will soon respond to this deal. AT&T PREPAID iPhone SE 32 GB for $139.99 at Best Buy. Thanks to Straight Talk for starting these deep discounts on the iPhone SE 32GB & the iPhone 6 32GB

  2. Whatever price Verizon comes up with ATT will likely be lower. I have a strange feeling that ATT has finally become competitive.

    1. AT&T has been competive for many a FY Quarters. They had 6GB of Data for $45/month before ST finally recognized what was going on. Now ST has 8GB @ the $45 price point. Go to the bestbuy website prepaid phones hit "all prepaid phones" and by default it shows what is *BEST SELLING*. The first (7) mobile phones right now are AT&T Network Mobile devices . (5) AT&T PREPAID & (2) Cricket Wireless.

    2. It boggles the mind that anyone would think that AT&T, a hugely successful company that more customers choose than any other by far (other than Verizon which is slightly larger) wasn't competitive.

    2. Not everyone needs a +5 in screen. The iPhone is a very dependable phone IMHO and I've used both iPhone and Android and keep going back to iPhone. Charges quickly, battery lasts all day with light use, updates for 4-5 yrs. This is a good deal.

    3. The iphone SE is the only new phone available with a 4 inch screen. Also there are no 4.5 inch screen phones sold new, the Samsung J1 is sold new under Verizon prepaid for $60-$75 at various best buys and has a 4.3 inch screen. 5 inch and higher is every new phone. The SE is a popular phone due to its performance but is not used by large people. The Apple IOS is however a locked system, no apk sideloading for third party apps as Android and Windows allows and many needed apps on Apple IOS are costly and apps that are free on android are not free on IOS. The $129-$149 iphone se brings android users to IOS that never would have paid $400 - $775 for an iphone. Also target sells the Verizon prepaid Moto E4 Plus for $119 which is a good deal

  7. does this phone have to be used for six month and then unlocked in order to be used on other carriers? if not are there any special instructions needed to get it to work on mvnos?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. AT&T locked phones do not need to be unlocked to be used on Cricket or an AT&T MVNO. They only need to be unlocked for use on a non-AT&T based carrier or with a global SIM like TruPhone.

Depending on the MVNO you may need to download a network profile before data will work. Also MMS does not work on any non-jailbroken iPhone on ST&T MVNOs that aren't Apple partners. The only MVNOs that are Apple partners are Consumer Cellular, Pure Talk and the TracFone brands. MMS also works on Cricket which is part or AT&T and not an MVNO.

      Delete
    2. Truphone is an Apple partner. No profile needed for mobile data.

      Delete
    3. Truphone is an Apple partner but not an AT&T MVNO. It's a global roaming SIM that roams on AT&T in the US. AT&T phones need to be unlocked to accept Truphone SIMs.

      Delete
    4. Hi Dennis. So you're saying that Apple partners include ALL TracFone brands AND DATA & MMS WORK on AT&T prepaid iPhones OUT OF THE BOX with TracFone brands?

      Delete
    5. All I am saying is that TracFone, which includes all their brands, is an Apple partner.

If TracFone provisions the phone correctly data and MMS should work. Everything from provisioning to billing tends to be flaky at TracFone and getting them to fix their mistakes can be very time consuming and frustrating.

  9. I wonder if the iPhone SE will be discontinued on Tuesday at Steve Job's Theater between 10am-11:30am PDT?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If it's discontinued it will be due to replacement with an SE2 model. This is a market segment that Apple has virtually locked down at this point and I can't imagine they would simply abandon it after greedily buying up market share with deep discounts (such as $139).

  10. Does Boost sell any phones that support simultaneous data and voice calls?

If not, does Boost's limited BYOP allow you to bring a phone that supports simultaneous data and cellular voice?

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I believe all of Boost's current phones support simultaneous voice and data as all of them should support Sprint Spark. I doubt that any BYOP phone supports Sprint Spark or simultaneous voice and data.

      Delete
    2. On modern phones, simultaneous voice and data requires VoLTE. Spark is triband LTE which has nothing to do with VoLTE. Sprint is supposed to be launching VoLTE soon but it might take a while before it's available on Boost.

      Delete
    3. So, since most areas have 25 and 26, Spark refers to areas that have band 41 in addition? If so, no Spark for me. Thanks, I always wondered what is Spark. I despise these marketing terms that even Sprint employees do not know how to define.

      Delete
    4. Sprint no longer uses the Spark trademark to refer to triband LTE. Spark was replaced in Sprint's marketing lexion with with "LTE Advanced" which is triband LTE plus carrier aggregation, beam forming and HPUE.

Before Spark most Sprint phones only supported LTE band 25, a few also supported band 26, but most didn't. Sprint only only has 5 mhz of Band 25 spectrum so data speeds on band 25 only phones tend to be slow.

    ReplyDelete

    1. AT&T will unlocked its prepaid phones after they have been used on AT&T Prepaid for six months. Use on a MVNO does not count toward meeting the six month requirement.

  14. I bought the Verizon E4 at Target (they price-matched the Walmart price.) I then bought the unlock code from an eBay seller. The phone worked fine with my T-mobile postpaid SIM.

I then put in an Xfinity SIM (Verizon MVNO) - I assumed it would not work because I assumed it was not a question of the locked status of the phone, but whether the Verizon database would allow the phone. I had put no Verizon credit on the phone.

Much to my surprise, the Xfinity SIM works just fine. I don't know if this happened due to the unlock code I entered, or perhaps Verizon treats Xfinity differently than other Verizon MVNOs.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Neither. The phone being unlocked won't affect the Verizon blacklist. The Xfinity SIM worked because it was previously activated on another phone. When you activate service on a Verizon MVNO they ask for your phone's IMEI (unlike GSM carriers) if you enter the E4's IMEI the activation will fail because its blacklisted until you pay the Verizon ransom. But of you activate service with a cleared Verizon IMEI on any Verizon MVNO and then swap the activated SIM into the E4 it should work. This also works on other Verizon Prepaid phones with unpaid ransoms.

  18. I can't find a way of booting into the recovery menu on my LG X Charge. Anyone here have any idea why?

If I can't get into the recovery menu how am I supposed to reset my phone if I forget my screen pin and the phone can't connect to the internet to login to Google?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks for trying Dennis but that procedure doesn't work on the X Charge from Xfinity.

      Delete
    2. The Xfinity version of the LG X Charge doesn't appear to have a full recovery menu, I don't know about the Cricket version. Instead, it only has options to perform a factory data reset and display its IMEI (instructions below). Dennis, have you ever heard of a phobe without a recovery menu? Or have I just not been able to find it yet?

      Factory data reset:
With the phone off, push and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons.
When the LG logo appears, keep holding down the Volume Down button but release the Power button and then push and hold the Power button again while still holding down the Volume Down button.
A screen will appear asking if you want to perform a factory data reset. Select yes or no with the Volume up and down buttons and confirm with the Power button.

      IMEI display:
With the phone off, push and hold the Volume up, Volume down and Power buttons.
A screen will appear displaying the phone's IMEI and SN along with their barcodes. The only option on this screen appears to be to push the Power button to restart the phone.

    3. Most LG stock recoveries only offer factory reset. That's all that's available in my LG G4's recovery. But factory reset is what the OP is looking for so your instructions should be what he needs.

  19. Not sure it's the case that these AT&T Prepaid SEs can be used with MVNO. I just got one from Best Buy and put in a Red Pocket SIM (using ATT network). It worked for about half hour. Then data stopped working and when I tried to dial out, I got routed to ATT customer support number. Wonder if something has changed and these are indeed locked to ATT Prepaid.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Doesn't Red Pocket require the APN to be changed? Seems like I saw something about that but not savvy enough to know how/when/where/if it applies.

      Delete
    2. APN - att.mvno (use prodata for LTE)
      Proxy IP Address: proxy.mvno.rpmobileweb.com (66.209.11.33)
      Proxy Port: 80
      MMSC URL - http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy IP Address: proxy.mvno.rpmobileweb.com (66.209.11.33)
      MMS Proxy Port: 80

      Delete
    3. I did download the APN profile from the Redpocket site. Like I said it worked for like 15-30 minutes. Able to make a call and surf the web. Then it stopped working. Tried restarting the phone and also re-installing the iOS Redpocket profile (with the APN settings), and still doesn't work. The odd thing is routing calls to ATT customer service greeting.

      Delete
    4. Not helpful, since the menu is blocked by AT&T. You have to install the Red Pocket profile with the APN changer at http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/

      Delete
    5. It doesn't sound like the phone didn't work because of a DIM lock - one would think that if there was a SIM lock problem it would have never worked. Sounds more like AT&T recognizes the IMEI and somehow disallows its use with Red Pocket.

      Delete
    6. @Robert. I think you are right. I chatted with RedPocket customer support. They looked up the account and said the phone in their system was tagged as lost or stolen. Once this happens, calls are routed to ATT and on the MVNO end, the account is suspended. That's why the SIM card didn't later work on another phone that was unlocked. I explained to the Redpocket service person that the phone was new but an ATT Prepaid phone, which I was told would work with ATT MVNOs. He or she said that probably caused it and reactivated my account. SIM is now working again on an unlocked phone. Now the question is whether to return the Phone or keep it and use it sort of like an iPod Touch. The other thought I had is maybe the Best Buy person didn't scan the bar code on the phone correctly when I picked it up. However, I did carefully watch him do it, since I know when the scan doesn't happen problems do arise.

  21. Buy the iPhone SE 32GB from Simple Mobile, not Walmart. Coupon code "SM20OFF" drops that to $103.20. With free overnight shipping. A record low?
This coupon also knocks 20% off the plan price. You have to add a plan to the cart to use the coupon.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Danger!
Any iPhone sold under Simple Mobile is Slim-Locked to Simple Mobile. It is NOT even interchangeable with other TracFone brands.
Which makes $103.20 not such a hot deal.

    2. Which other TracFone brand and network SIMs have you tested in which Simple Mobile iPhone models? What happens when you try (error message, no service, missing features)?

  22. Is the Boost IPhone SE the same model as the ATT prepaid IPhone SE?
If not, which one supports more USA data bands on the other carriers? How much should I expect to pay for an unlock code?

    Replies
    1. No they are not the same. See Differences Between iPhone SE Models @ EveryiPhone.com for more information. iPhone unlocking prices fluctuate dramatically and vary depending on which operator the iPhone is locked to. I don't follow them but you can check eBay for current prices.

  23. If I buy the AT&T Prepaid iPhone SE, can I get data and MMS on an AT&T MVNO such as RedPocket if I use the APN changer at http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/? And will I be able to activate the phone on an AT&T MVNO without any hiccups?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Using a profile from a third party site like unlockit.co.nz will enable data but not MMS.

Locked AT&T phones accept AT&T MVNO SIMs and work for voice, SMS, Data and MMS may require manual setup which is blocked on iPhones. AT&T specific apps like AT&T Address Book and AT&T Navigator won't work.

      Delete
    2. I had no luck with RedPocket. As I mentioned above, it worked for 20-30 minutes, then stopped working. Calls got routed to ATT Customer Support and data stopped. Chatting with RedPocket customer service, they said the Redpocket SIM was suspended because phone was reported lost or stolen. After going back and forth, it seemed that perhaps ATT recognized IMEI and then flagged something wrong. Redpocket was able to restore the SIM and it works again on different, unlocked, phone. I've just tried again, activating an EasyGo Pay as you Go SIM. It activated fine and calling and data seem to working. Waiting to see if the same thing happens. Could be some the ATT Prepaid iPhone SE works with some and not others. We'll see. Whatever led RedPocket to suspend service didn't stop activation of the phone with EasyGo.

      Delete
    3. Exact same thing happened with EasyGo. Thinking his may be a new policy and system that ATT Prepaid has instituted. Don't think you can use their phones on MVNOs anymore!

      Delete
    4. It's also possible that Best Buy didn't properly scan your phone and AT&T assumes it was stolen. Check the IMEI on the AT&T or Cricket sites to see if that's the case

      Delete
    5. @Dennis. You are right. I contacted AT&T and they said BB has had trouble with scanning phones correctly. I had to provide IMEI and phone number, and email them the receipt. They released the hold on the phone and also connected me with MVNO to reactivate the SIM.

Do Android phones even need an antivirus app?

    ReplyDelete
  25. The Apple answer to this is "get an iPhone instead"

Android antivirus is not recommended and generally not needed. It's one of those legacy things like Yahoo and C-Net downloads and Ask Jeeves that has no use any more and is more likely to harm you with malware than prevent it.

    1. That's not new. Some apps require a minimum Android version, or specific device features or are only available on a specific carrier or only in some countries. Normally when you search or browse for apps using the Play Store app the incompatible ones are hidden.

If you get apps by browsing the Play Store on the web or follow links to apps you will run into incompatible apps fairly often.
