Updated 9/20: Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week: Sep 17 - Sep 23

iPhone 6
Welcome to the latest edition of Prepaid Phone News' Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week feature. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've been able to find online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the AT&T Prepaid iPhone 6 32 GB for $199.99 at Best Buy and Walmart. This is the best price I've seen for the AT&T Prepaid iPhone 6, which sold for $649.99 when it launched three years ago. It's a good choice for anyone who wants a relatively inexpensive iPhone with a larger screen than iPhone SE.

The iPhone 6 has a 4.7 inch 750x1334 px screen, 8 MP rear and 1.2 MP front camera, A8 SOC, 1 GB RAM. fingerprint sensor and NFC for Apple Pay It's locked to AT&T but AT&T locked phones will work on AT&T prepaid or postpaid, Cricket or any AT&T MVNO like H2O, FreedomPop LTE GSM, Red Pocket GSMA, Pure TalkUSA or TracFone AT&T.

  1. I'm trying to think of a reason to buy a $200 iPhone 6 over a $140 iPhone SE and am struggling to find one. I could possibly understand it if they were the same price. The screen size isn't worth the sacrifice in specs. Others may think completely differently I know.

    1. Perhaps because 4" really is that small, accept it. I've used both the 6 and se, and IMHO your making it sound like the SE is an iPhone 8 and the 6 and iPhone from 2007.

    2. I have a 6, 6S and a SE. The SE is small but is fine once you get used to it. There's no way I'd pay MORE for the 6 with 1gb of RAM than I would for the SE. As I said before, I allow for the fact that others might disagree...I just don't think it's wise.

Having them at the same price point is a different discussion.

    3. The only reason I have an SE is because it's the smallest screen smartphone with the best specs out there. Screen size doesn't matter to some and actually is beneficial for people that like more pocket-sized devices that have better battery life.

  2. iPhones used to be on the cutting edge. Now the 6 and 7 offer a 4.7" screen that was common about four years ago. While the latest Galaxies start at 5.8" and go up to 6.3". Sure there's the iPhone Plus models at 5.5" but Apple charges a premium over the base iPhone 6/7/8 just for a larger screen that should be standard at this point. Obviously, iPhones were never meant to be budget phones but Apple just doesn't seem to be doing right by their customers nowadays.

    1. This is why they make iPads. 5 or 6" inches is just too large for a phone and too small for a tablet. I think 4.7" is already pushing the limit on pocketable / one-handable design. I love my SE, and so long as they keep making inexpensive and up to spec designs, that will be my choice.

    2. 5" is too small for a phone. 6" is too big. In between? That's the sweet spot. Just right.

"but Apple just doesn't seem to be doing right by their customers nowadays"

Nobody likes iPhones any more. That's why they sell far fewer premium phones than either Samsung, LG, Motorola, and even Frank. Their sales and profits plummeted to nothing after the iPhone 3... No one likes the large iPhones at all!, and even Pebble crushed the Apple watch in sales in the last quarter. No one even bothers to update IOS anymore: most iphones are running version 6.

It's rumored that Apple is headed toward bankruptcy by next summer.

      Delete
    3. Ok, did you make up everything you just stated or just part of it? Apple is consistently earning over half of the profits generated by ALL smartphone manufacturers combined. iOS 10 is now installed on on over 85% of iPhones.

    4. Sarcasm?

      Bingo!

This was in response to someone saying "Apple just doesn't seem to be doing right by their customers nowadays" while Apple is selling more and more premium smartphones all the time, "doing right" by more premium phone customers (and any other customers of anything on the planet, to judge by the company's size and profits.... and all of this is on an upward trend.

Isn't that basically the 6s Plus? (I know - not quite a 6 inch screen, but pretty close)

Nothing in that paragraph re SIM unlocking question.

      6 month use the yes

That is AT&T pre-paid policy, anon. 12:53pm clearly stated "current at&t post paid account". POSTPAID!

Will AT&T POSTpaid service unlock an AT&T PREpaid phone??? When/what requirements???

    5. Don't bother asking AT&T to unlock your phone. Just go on eBay and get it unlocked for $2.

  6. None of the secret codes work on my new Verizon LG. Not even *#06#. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

    1. Have you tried
      *#*#4636#*#*
      on the dialer?

      Delete
    2. Some hash codes are disabled on some phones but *#06# usually isn't.

Do you have an app installed that intercepts dialer input like Google Voice or an MVNOs international calling app? You may need to disable or uninstall it for short codes to work.

If you need the IMEI and *#06# doesn't work, the IMEI is always printed somewhere on the phone's packaging and also somewhere on the phone itself, usually under the battery if the battery is removable or on the back of the phone if it's not. On Most Android phones the IMEI can also be found in Settings > About phone > Status.

      Delete
    3. I don't have any dialer apps installed. I did find the IMEI in the menu. I was trying to get to the secret menu so I could enter the unlock code my carrier gave me but I don't have any SIMs that fit in this phone, it uses a nano SIM. I found several online sources that say I should be able to bring up the unlock menu on LG phones by dialing 2945#*"model number"# or 2945#*71001# or 2945#*20001# none of which worked. I then tried *#06# which didn't work either so I thought something might be wrong because it says online *#06# should display the IMEI on this model and its always worked on all my other phones. Could it have something to do with it being a Verizon phone? Could they have disabled all of the codes?

      Delete
    4. If you have a Best Buy nearby they have TracFone, Net10 or Simple Mobile SIM kits for a $1. You can use one of their SIMs to get the unlock code menu to come up.

Carriers can disable codes, but I don't kmow why they would disable *#06*.

  10. I know the AT&T Prepaid iPhone SE will work on TracFone out of the box, but will MMS texting work OK too or will I need to mess with stuff to get MMS to work {which I stink at}.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. TracFone is an Apple partner and MMS should work with an iPhone on TracFone, if TracFone provisions the account properly.

However if TracFone messes up the provisioning, which seems to happen fairly often, it's usually difficult to get then to fix it. If you want easy and trouble free go with AT&T Prepaid or an MVNO that's an Apple partner and has better support than TracFone such as Consumer Cellular or Pure TalkUSA.

    2. Thanks for the information Dennis. I want to try the SE on TracFone for a cheap way to see if I like iPhones (but probably will stick with Android regardless).

    3. Hey Dennis, would I have a problem with MMS if I bought a Total Wireless iPhone SE and used it on Total Wireless? Or do the issues only happen with BYOD?

      Delete
    4. Issues can happen with any phone. Maybe a little less likely with a Total Wireless phone than a BYOP.

  11. Here's a question for the experts

When I call a non-VoLTE line from my Verizon VoLTE-enabled phone with HD Voice turned on, I understand I won't get HD Voice in that situation but is my call connected over 2G or LTE?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you have an LTE connection your call will be be transported over VoLTE until it reaches a Verizon switch that transforms it to a circuit switched call that the other phone can handle.

      Delete
    2. To clarify, are you saying that the connection between the VoLTE phone and Verizon switches from LTE to a 2G connection once the network identifies the line being called as non-VoLTE?

      Delete
    3. No, the call with use VoLTE between your phone and a Verizon switch and a 2G or landline circuit switched connection between the Verizon switch the other phone.
