Updated 9/30: Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week: Sep 24 - Sep 30

Motorola Moto G4 Plus
Welcome to the latest edition of Prepaid Phone News' Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week feature. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've been able to find online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the unlocked Motorola G4 Plus LTE Android phone 64 GB on sale for $179.99 $199.99 at B&H. Update 9/25: B&H's price has gone up to $199.99.

The G4 Plus was originally priced at $299.99 when it was released last year.  It features a Snapdragon 617, 4 GB of RAM, a 5.5" Full HD (1920 x 1080) Gorilla Glass 3 screen, fingerprint reader, SD card slot, 16 MP main and 5 MP front facing cameras. The phone is water repellent, supports quick charging and has a non-removable 3000 mAh battery.

The G4 Plus launched with Android Marshmallow. A Nougat upgrade is available and Motorola has promised that the phone will eventually receive Android Oreo.

The G4 Plus is a universal phone that works on virtually all networks. If supports quad-band GSM, CDMA 850 and 1900, UMTS 850, 900, 1700, 1900 and 2100 and LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 25, 26 and 41. VoLTE is supported and has been reported to work on Verizon and T-Mobile.

  1. Does anyone have this problem at all? I bought the i6 at Best Buy and when put in our SIM, it getting block as Stolen/lost phone. Went to BB tell them what happen they punch something in computer now can only use it on Prepaid ATT not Post.

    1. Call ATT. They should be able to provision it.

    2. We did, no help they blame it on Best Buy not property mark the phone. The funny thing is a lot of my coworker don’t have problem at all. Thinking about just return and get a refund.

      Delete
    3. Just return it and get a replacement phone.

    4. This again? What's wrong with Best Buy? How can they keep selling phones without reporting them as sold? Obviously, they scan the phones out of their inventory control system. Otherwise, Best Buy wouldn't know how many phones they have in inventory or stolen. So they must keep track of what they sell they just can't be bothered to let the carriers know.

    1. No service. If someone call in, we keep getting message as “This caller temporary not except call at this moment, if you think this is mistake try call back later.” . If call out then message said “call customer service for further help.” We did but they said BB is mark it/activate it wrong. Basicly, Best Buy told us ATT will fix it, ATT said Best Buy will fix it.

  7. The new boxes that package the verizon prepaid phones state that for verizon to offset the low costs of their prepaid phones the customer needs to keep verizon prepaid service active for 12 months or have paid a minimum of $75 of service. Has anyone read the back of the new boxes and had verizon unlock the phone after using only $75 worth of verizon prepaid service?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Or you can get unlock code from ebay.

      Delete
    2. Verizon prepaid iPhone unlock code has zero matches on eBay.

Are these unlockers even legit? Paying some shop clerk $8 to use his bosses contract buyout portal on your behalf so he gets stuck with the $75 bill and you aren't even buying phone service from him seems pretty unethical. Should we start encouraging other readers to buy lost / stolen phones and hire an imei swap service too?

    3. Easy to unlock your Moto E4, E4 Plus, G4, G4 Play, E using an eBay unlocked, starting at $2.09. It's legal to unlock your phone, according to the US Gov.

      Delete
    4. There is a $12.99 Verizon prepaid iPhone unlock on eBay, 50-50 chance, not guaranteed. There is a $4.99 unlock, money back if it fails.

      Delete
    5. These ebay unlocking services all require that the unlock codes are mailed through usps mail not email. What do they use an envelope with a stamp?

      Delete
    6. I've never seen one mail out the code. It aways can via Email. I suspect the text is to satisfy Ebay's terms.

    7. Dale anonymous at 1:18pm are you saying that the ebay phone unlockers will send the unlock codes after payment is made to the buyer through their email address to the buyers email address which would skirt around the ebay rules?

    8. Every unlock code I've purchased through eBay has came through the eBay messaging system AND a copy of the message was sent to my registered Email which included the unlock code.

  8. According to some posts for VZ prepaid phone threads on Slickdeals, people have been unable to unlock prepaid VZ phones with only a month of prepaid service - $40. Prefer to just get an unlock code for $2 or so off Ebay. Only works for specific VZ prepaid phones. Mostly Motorola VZ prepaid phones.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The verizon prepaid phone boxes claim that $75 worth of service needs to be used or 12 months of service so that is why $40 is not enough to unlock the phones

  9. Can someone tell me the cheapest way to create a portable number that is not on the Sprint network? Thank you

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No.

Porting deals are one of the last good avenues for value added bonuses, so porting strategies are a trade secret.

Learn the hobby instead of asking to be spoonfed, or offer some tidbits of real value first, and eventually you too will discover the free number game.

      Delete
    2. Ignore that. Probably a HoFo reject ;-)
The cheapest way is to order a FreedomPop LTE GSM SIM for 99c. You can port out the Google Voice number they assign. Some receiving carriers like Sprint have to do the final step manually, so call them if the port does not go through in 24 hours. Don't forget to turn off all optional Freedompop services, but you might want to wait until the port goes through in case you have to call CS for help (F-pop does not automatically cancel your account after the port out completes).

  11. Horrible experience ordering an Iphone SE from Tracfone. Would not take the promo codes listed here. Tried 2 chat sessions, & 1 hour phone call to Exec. Resolution who wasn't the supervisor (all supervisors were busy on phone); got me nowhere, tried to cancel order they couldn't. Now I have a phone coming & wish I never ordered. Long time customer too. When my 4 phones expire in 2-3 years I will never use them again.

    1. I always caution potential new customers away from any America Movil brand. Invariably a "long time" customer chimes in with how they never had an issue. My response is always, just stay put, you will.

Why set yourself up for their customer disservice circus? There is no solution to being a Movil customer, leaving is the only way. More than a million do so every year.

    2. Dennis, your promo codes do not work for new phones at Tracfone. I tried 2 different times. Add to the factor Customer Service is so bad they can't apply it before, or after sale, & can not cancel an order either.

    3. Dennis, I received my AT&T Iphone SE. Want to use on Tracfone. I read MMS may not work? Should I even try? I want to be able to then change AT&T when Tracfone time expires. Thanks for your help. I tried Straight Talk before on Tracfone, doesn't work even though Howards Forum says it does.

    4. You partly right about the codes. I tested them all and:
FRIEND1 did not work. I've removed it from the post.
TFPH10OFF and TF15OFF both worked. TF15OFF seems to require a phone plus airtime purchase. TFPH10OFF worked on phones with or without airtime. You can even stack the two codes for a bigger discount.
The TracFone site will tell you if the code worked when you click the Apply code button. If it doesn't work you can try another code or remove the phone from the cart. Don't press submit unless you are happy with the total shown as that's what you will be charged, plus tax.

TracFone is an Apple partner so MMS should work. I think it's worth gambling with a $1 SIM and $15 airtime card. If it does't work you can always try another carrier.

    5. Thanks Dennis. I got a circle w/diagonal line through it when I tried to apply. Too late now though. I will never order a phone from TF website again.

I got the AT&T Iphone SE from Walmart, shrink wrap looked fishy, a big wad of shrink wrap on top edge. Guess I will open to see if it is NEW. Problem is I have 3 years of airtime on TF to transfer I will be SOL if it doesn't work. Never ever want to call Customer Svc, or chat again! Took a day to recover from the ordeal.

    6. If your current TracFone is a BYOP on AT&T with a nano SIM you can just swap your SIM into the new iPhone and there would be no need to contact TracFone at all. Even if you are transferring your service to a new TracFone BYOP SIM you only have to do it once. It the new phone turns out to be defective just remove your TracFone SIM from it, exchange the phone and put the SIM in the replacement phone.

If you do end up doing a transfer to a new SIM use TracFone chat, rather than calling or doing it online and have them verify your balances before and after the transfer. Be sure to save the chat transcript so you have a record of how many service days and airtime you started with just in case anything goes wrong.

    7. Thanks Dennis. Current phone is Moto G4, so I have to transfer to a new SIM. I better stick to the Iphone SE Tracfone, forget the AT&T Prepaid for now, I think it is refurbished anyway. Tho it was suppose to be new.

I will be going from triple minutes to their dumb smartphone plan. So will be fun. Too bad I am too scared to use my BYOP sim kit that is triple minutes. I figure I will mess things up, this is my home phone number. Too risky with Tracfone. Husband would kill me if I mess this up!

      Delete
    8. It's scary dealing with phone numbers that are important. If it gets screwed up it will be TracFone's doing not yours. Not that that's any consolation. Good luck.

    9. Thanks Dennis! Going to try tomorrow on chat & pray for an intelligent person. Is Saturday's chat people better or worse? Maybe Monday is better. Yes, I am scared after all of this.

Just curious if you can use a BYOP triple minute sim kit on a purchased locked Tracfone Iphone SE. Never tried before. Used on MOTO G4 unlocked.

    10. It's always a gamble with TracFone CS but I would think you're more likely getting someone knowledgeable during the week than during the week.

Once activated a TracFone BYOP SIM should work in a TracFone iPhone but if you are risk adverse it's probably safer to use the SIM that came with the phone. Which network SIM did the TracFone iPhone come with (AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile)? Is that the network you want?

      Delete
    11. Thanks again Dennis. I will wait til Monday then.

Yea I am risk adverse, aka chicken. It came with Verizon, I just check the beginning SIM #. Yeah, Verizon is ok. Just want triple minutes, but I am not a heavy talker anyway, just cheap. This will end up costing me more than my average $7 mo; but I wanted an Iphone SE!

By the way I also have a Iphone 5S, one year old & it does not unlock like they say. I think it said a laughable amount of money refund, not an unlocked phone.

  14. Dennis, can you use a $20 minute card for 90 days on Smartphone? I know it won't triple minutes, but can I still buy the cards (online at Tracfone) for the new Iphone SE that is "Smartphone Plan" phone? Thanks.

  16. Ting dropped the Moto G4 Play listed in this post. They also cancelled the G5 Plus now that the G5S Plus is available.

  17. Two corrections to recent phone list edits:
    1. Ting is selling the G5S Plus, not the G5 Plus for $224.
    2. Virgin charges $1/month on the 6 months free promo for BYOiPh, not $1 total (which they charged in the expired 1-year service promo).
