Updated 9/9: Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week: Sep 3 - Sep 9

Motorola Moto E4
Welcome to the latest edition of Prepaid Phone News' Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week feature. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've been able to find online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the Verizon Prepaid Motorola Moto E4 for $39.88 at Walmart (online or in-store). Update sold out online. Verizon's regular price is $69.99 and the factory unlocked version of the E4 goes for $129.99.

The E4 can be used on Verizon Prepaid but what's special about this deal is that the phone can be inexpensively unlocked and used on GSM networks including AT&T and T-Mobile. Many eBay sellers have unlock codes for about $2. See this Slickdeals thread for unlocking and setup instructions.

The Moto E4 runs Android 7.1 Nougat and has a Snapdragon 425 SOC, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, a 5 inch 720x1280 IPS screen, 8 MP rear and 5 MP front cameras, fingerprint sensor, memory card slot, removable battery and dual band Wi-Fi. It will work almost anywhere in the world with support for the following bands: quad band GSM; UMTS 850, 900, 1700, 1900 and 2100 Mhz; LTE bands 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 25, 26, 38, 41 and 66 and CDMA 800, 850 and 1900 Mhz.

Although the Verizon Prepaid Moto E4 supports all of Sprint's bands it's not whitelisted by Sprint so it will not work on Sprint or Sprint MVNOs. It's possible to use the Verizon Prepaid Moto E4 on Verizon MVNOs if it's been released and unlocked by Verizon. Officially Verizon requires that the phone be activated on Verizon Prepaid and $75 in airtime added before it can be released, although some users have reported getting E4s released after adding only $40.

  1. Hey Dennis, I check this post every week, and pretty much every phone, temporary or long use I've successfully gotten deals because of you, thanks so much, I just used your link to buy the Moto E4, I needed something to replace a temporary Samsung Galaxy Express 3.

I remember reading here that with the "change" of branding for AT&T prepaid, that unlocking would no longer work, is this true? Is it possible to still buy GoPhone/Prepaid and unlock prior for free through AT&T website?

    Thanks again

    1. AT&T now requires six months service for unlocking. The instant unlocks for non-customers are no longer available.

    2. Almost all AT&T Prepaid or GoPhones, including Samsung phones, can be unlocked dirt cheap on eBay. Usually around $2. It wasn't even worth the bother of requesting an unlock from AT&T.

  2. Why does the E4 need to be unlocked? I thought all Verizon phones came unlocked?

    1. Recent Verizon Prepaid phones, including the E4 are locked.

  3. Some concerns about the Verizon e4: I saw on the Verizon e4 boxes that were being sold on swappa the processor is 1.2 mhz. The sd425 is supposed to be 1.4. Has there been change in processor or down clocking (boost's and MetroPCS's e4's have mtk6737 so I was concerned)? Secondly, as far as I could find, the v e4 doesn't carry all those bands. A couple places said it only has 2,4,5 and 12. Maybe those are the CDMA bands- ? Any clarification on these matters would be appreciated

    1. I copied the band list from the Motorola site. It's possible that some of the bands are disabled on the Verizon model but even 2, 4, 5 and 12 are adequate for T-Mobile and AT&T.

If the phone's packaging says the clock is 1.2 mhz then it likely is.

AFAIK, all US Versions the MetroPCS versions have either a Snapdragon 425 or a 427. According to the Boost website their version of the E4 has a 1.4 mhz SD 427. Where did you see that the MetroPCS model has a Mediatek?

      Delete
    2. The release material (pics and ads) for boost and MetroPCS said it had a 1.3 mhz processor and some websites were saying it had mtk6737 along with skipping the fingerprint sensor which the pics clearly showed no fingerprint sensor so I assumed that all added up to mtk... I checked Verizon prepaid website. It says the lte bands are b2, b4, b5, and b13. Also it says on there it Is sd425 so I'm really not sure what's up with the boxes.

    3. If a source says a Verizon phone only has LTE bands 2, 4, 5, and 12, its wrong. Verizon phones need to have LTE band 13, which the E4 has.

Verizon's website probably won't list bands their network doesn't support regardless if the phone has then or not.

  4. Hey Dennis, off topic here but I thought this might be of interest to you(and me). On the T-Mobile prepaid website it shows a limited time offer that you sign up for details and claim in-store. Any idea what the deal is??

    1. The offer is a free SIM if you activate a new $50 or higher line.
"1. Visit a T-Mobile store this week. Mention this FREE SIM Card offer to one of our store representatives.

      2. Get qualifying prepaid plan. Sign up for a $50/mo. (or higher) high-speed single or multi-line plan and you'll walk out with a FREE SIM card."

A bit of a yawner if you ask me.

    2. Agreed Dennis, not trying to sound entitled but there are so many deals out there that a free sim card ranks near the bottom, IMHO!

  9. Love the phone price tips. Thanks to you we have two LG Phoenix 2 phones on FreedomPop LTE that work great.

As for the Verizon Prepaid Moto E4 phones I can give some firsthand experience. We purchased two, a few weeks ago, for $49.88 at Walmart. We paid about $2/ea for SIM unlock codes, on eBay. It's our understanding that Verizon requires some amount of paid service before they can be used on Verizon MVNOs.

We have a FreedomPop LTE SIM in one Moto E4 and it works great. Some of the phone's bands are disabled but 2, 4 and 5 work with AT&T.

We have a T-Mobile SIM in the other Moto E4 and it works great, as well. No configuration was required for APN or anything else. The native text messaging app works by default (Message+). LTE bands 2 and 4 are the only ones that work with T-Mobile using this phone, however, but that hasn't presented any connectivity problems. (We just drove 1100 miles with these phones.)

One important note is that I believe that the GSM bands are disabled and voice must be going over VoLTE. It's clear as a bell but if I turn off mobile data I can no longer make or receive calls, even when I have 3 or 4 bars of service.

It's my understanding that only the Verizon versions include VoLTE but it also happens to be compatible with T-Mobile. With no GSM the only way that this phone would work with AT&T would be VOIP (like with FreedomPop).

It's also my understanding that you can activate a Verizon MVNO SIM in another phone and transfer it to this phone without meeting the "Verizon FED" but we haven't tried that ourselves.

The fingerprint sensor is a really nice thing to have. These are our first phones to include those.

    Android 7.1.1 comes installed.

    2. You weren't very clear on description of LTE bands, you say some won't work, but you just listed them, band 12 for At-t T-mobile?

      Delete
    3. If what you say is true than this article needs some major amendments. However, the SlickDeals post linked in this article says GSM voice and all LTE bands used by AT&T and T-Mobile should work.

Can you post the firmware/software version number so we can check if there's been an update that disabled the GSM bands? Look for a number that starts with "NDQ"

      Thanks

    4. Okay, that's my comment, above. I just read 33 pages of the Slickdeals thread and downloaded LTE Discovery.

I was basing the LTE band availability on the published data for the Verizon Prepaid version of the E4, but LTE Discovery is definitely saying that my T-Mobile connection is using Band 12, right now.

I still don't think the GSM bands are enabled, though, because I can't make or receive calls when I turn off mobile data.

One thing I left out, above, is that hotspot works fine with the T-Mobile SIM.

      Delete
    5. One more update: I just checked our E4 that has a FreedomPop LTE SIM installed, using LTE Discovery, and it's connected using Band 17. So the published information about the limited LTE bands on the Verizon Prepaid Moto E4 are incorrect.

    6. One more update to the comment, above.

After seeing comments on several forums I rebooted my unlocked E4 without a SIM installed and then rebooted it again with the SIM reinstalled.

I now have cellular voice on T-Mobile that works even with mobile data turned off. So it appears that the prepaid e4 does have full GSM and LTE functionality on T-Mobile and most likely on AT&T as well.

  10. Whoops! I think I might have typo-ed that last comment. We paid $39.88 for the E4, at Walmart, not $49.88.

  11. I want to buy 4 Moto E4 models to use on Total Wireless and haven't seen any super deals lately on the unlocked models w/o ads . What is story on the $40 release (vs the stated ransom $75 on box)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why would there be any super deals "lately w/o ads" on a newly released unlocked moto e4 or e4 plus? The story on the $40 Walmart VZW PP moto e4 is that some users have reported that after applying $40 against the $75 ransom and the putting in/calling for a unlock that was granted. Then allowed them to take the VZW PP Moto e4 to a VZW MVNO, in your case Total Wireless.

      Delete
    2. The risk is that Verizon does not unlock at the $40 point (vs the stated &75ransom making the phone cost $40+$75=$115.00. I wonder how like Verizon would unlock at the less value on 4 phones. At the moment, it seems that the only $100 unlocked E4 model are the Amazon Prime version and it is one 1 per customer.

      Delete
    3. Does anyone even need to pay the Verizon ransom?

Isn't it confirmed that you can just activate a Verizon MVNO SIM on another Verizon phone and then move the SIM to the E4 without paying the ransom?

      Delete
  12. @Dennis
    Is this true?

    Replies
    1. I believe that the E4 needs to be unlocked, but doesn't need to be whitelisted by Verizon, before it will accept an activated Verizon MVNO SIM.

    2. Great!
What about GSM voice? Does this phone support it or are the bands disabled?

      Delete
    3. See the Slickdeals thread (link is in the post). At least a couple posts on it say GSM voice works but you need to disable LTE and then re-enable it before voice works.

  14. Does anyone know a way, maybe an app, I can lookup which bands my phone supports and which bands are enabled/disabled?

I tried looking up my phone's specs online but its one of those phones that has a different model for each carrier while still keeping the same name and the only specs I can find online are for another model. I also tried searching by the model number but nothing comes up.

  15. Ok, the above question might be a bit too long. Let's try this again.

Does anyone know if the Xfinity/Verizon LG X Charge (M322) would work on AT&T or T-Mobile? After its unlocked of course.

    1. It should but not optimally as it lacks support for LTE band 12 and UMTS 1700.

      See http://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-M322-x-charge-xfinity-mobile for specs.

Isn't UMTS 1700 the T-Mobile exclusive AWS band that's been replaced by the 1900 band in most areas?

  16. Would a Verizon Moto E4 work on Tracfone carrier? I'm confused as to how to figure out the band's for Tracfone.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It depends on which network you need. If AT&T works for you get a TracFone BYOP SIM for AT&T it will work on the Verizon Prepaid Moto E4 after its unlocked. If you need the Verizon network get a TracFone Verizon SIM and activate it on another Verizon phone and then install the activated SIM in the E4 in order to avoid the Verizon ransom on the E4.

CellNUVO: some users still have service.
SpeedTalk: does not offer AT&T service. The website is misleading with its blue maps and references to AT&T compatible devices. But their AT&T compatible device support is limited to unlocked AT&T devices on the GSM-T network. If you try to purchase a plan and SIM using a zipcode with AT&T service but no T-Mobile, such as 54235 you will get a no coverage message.
