Most highly specced smartphones cost an arm and leg nowadays. But if you're looking for a budget-friendly device that comes with features such as Virtual Reality, Fast-Charging, NFC, and many others, Alcatel has unveiled the IDOL 5.

The IDOL 5 comes with a 5.2-inch Full HD display with a metal and curved glass display. From within, the device is powered by an Octa-Core MediaTek MT6757 processor with 2GB of RAM. There is onboard storage of 32GB and a microSD card slot for up to 256GB memory expansion.

Camera-wise, the IDOL 5 has a 12-megapixel camera with Dual LED flash and 1080p HD video recording. In front, there is a 8-megapixel camera for selfies and video calls. The device houses a 2,850 mAh battery that can quickly be charged with fast charging technology.

Despite its affordable price, the IDOL 5 comes with front-facing speakers, USB-C, NFC, and a reversible display. The smartphone also comes with the exclusive Alcatel NOW key that lets you quickly launch your most commonly-used apps.

Virtual Reality is an exciting addition to this budget-friendly device as it has been optimized for VR. You can pair the IDOL 5 with the separately sold UNI360 VR Goggles so you can make the most of 360-degree entertainment.

Upon release, the smartphone runs Android 7.0 Nougat.

Starting October 27, 2017, the Alcatel IDOL 5 will be exclusively available at Cricket-branded stores or at cricketwireless.com for $199. The UNI360 VR Googles will also be available on the same date, which you can purchase separately for $49.99.

    1. I don't think the 4 was ever updated to Nougat, so I wouldn't count on it.

  2. What's a reversible display?

  3. Who still uses Cricket in 2017? They have really slow speeds (3mbit throttle) and they charge fees on literally everything (upgrade fees, tethering fees, activation fees, late fees, payment fees, sucker fee, throttle fee). Cricket is the new Boost!

    1. I haven't seen a 3 mbit throttle on any Cricket plans (converted that would be 375 KB which is is close to 2G speeds) and I haven't seen any Cricket plans other than the discounted unlimited plans that are even throttled to 3MB (which is 8 times the 3mbit speeds that you mentioned).

Please post your sources for this info as I'm sure many others would be interested to find out more about this.

    2. "Who still uses Cricket in 2017?"

Cricket's network is about 30% better than MetroPCS's and twice as good as Boost's.

Even at 3 mbps, that smokes the 0 mbps Boost gives you in most places in the US.

Most of your fee claims are bogus.

"late fees, payment fees, sucker fee, throttle fee"

The late fees and payment fees are only for deadbeats. Same for the sucker fee. Throttle fee? They will do that for free, you know. (Ummm, that's not a good thing, is it!)

" Cricket is the new Boost!"

Cricket would be the new Boost if it chopped down most of its towers, and forced the Cricket reps in its stores to drink their thermometers.

  5. Mediatek I can live with. 2GB is a non-starter.

  6. Mediatek makes slow, unreliable and unstable processors The MediaTek MT6757 is especially bad.

  7. A mediatek with 2gb of ram for $200?

Just skip to the part where you've got a bridge to sell me.

    1. You can also order the new Blu S1 for $160 and get the free Sprint Unlimited year. Put your AT&T or Tmo SIM in the second slot and compare service and speeds.
