Red Pocket Mobile is currently running a promotion where its users can save money on their annual plans.

As announced recently, the MVNO is offering two of their most popular eBay Exclusive Annual Plans with the discount. If you are interested in getting one, you may opt for the following:

Red Pocket 1 Year Prepaid Wireless Plan (Best Value)

What this plan includes is 1 year of unlimited talk, text, and 1GB of 4G LTE data each month for only $189.99. When you divide this by one year, you'll only end up paying $16 per month. The original price for this 1 year prepaid wireless plan on eBay is $450, which means you get to save $260.01. That's a whooping 57% off on the bill.

Red Pocket 1 Year Prepaid Wireless Plan (Essentials)

This plan comes with 500 minutes, 500 texts, and 500 MB of 4G LTE each month for only $89. Again, this sums up to a monthly bill of $7. On eBay, the plan is listed as $180. But with the 50% discount, you get to save $90.01.

These two offers are available until 8AM PDT Saturday, October 7.

  1. Is there any reason why many(?) MVNOs are opening their doors so liberally?

One reason, perhaps in the case of Red Pocket's annual rates, is to lock in customers.

    Other than this, any other...?

    1. Buy in bulk and get a cheaper rate. Same thing Sam's CLub and Costco do. You aren't locked into anything. You can leave before you service is up without an ETF. You just lose out on remaining service.

  2. Is data hard capped on these plans PR is either or both unlimited throttled after 4G LTE data allotment is used up?

    1. The terms and conditions make it clear that the data is hard-capped (as suggested by the fact that they don't advertise unlimited data).

However, you can buy add-on data (also minutes or texts on the Essentials plan) at $2 for 100MB or $5 for 250MB. Add-ons do not roll over, they expire at the end of the monthly term.

That $90 Essentials plan is definitely tempting for a low-use person like me. I'm just not sure I want to go through the trouble of switching carriers. I'm not paying very much on Tracfone right now anyway, and I already have service through December. So there's not a whole lot of incentive for me even if this is a good price.

  3. These plans are terribly inflexible.

If your data usage ever spikes, you're pretty much SOL.

  4. Why is their unlimited 3GB plan offered on Amazon but not Ebay ?

  5. Are there any valid rumors to Red Pocket coming to retail stores such as Walmart, Target, or the like? This $7.50/mo price for 500/500/500 blows away Tracfone's 250/500/250 plans @ $12.50/mo

  6. Aha...! Cheap data, that makes sense. Somewhere I was reading that wholesale data was @ $8/gig in 2016 and has fallen to @ $1.50/gig. Forgot where I read it.

The marketing art of creating scarcity in the land of plenty is well, coming to an end. Or, wait, what gimmicks are ready to unfold!

    1. If Sprint and T-Mo merge then we may see a return to 2016 rates, unless the new merged company is aggressive in combating the Big Two that will remain.
The other possibility is that all three will return to their wink-wink cartel behavior of raising prices together (on different days of the week to thwart collusion accusations), just like they used to do with their administrative fee and upgrade fee price hikes.
