LG Optimus Black and Samsung Replenish Heading To Boost Mobile

According to Pocketnow.com, Boost Mobile is getting two more Android phones sometime in the first half of next year. They even have a leaked press photo (above) of the phones. The two devices are the CDMA version of the Optimus Black and the Samsung Replenish.

The Optimus Black, which will probably be called something else when it launches, is already available from Sprint as the LG Marquee, so there are lots of reviews available. Here's a sampling of some of the more in depth ones; PhoneScoop, PhoneArena LaptopMag, PCMag. The consensus seems to be that the Black is a solid mid-range Android phone that's notable for having the brightest screen of any current phone and for being very light and thin. At 3.95 oz and .36" the LG Black is both lighter and thinner than the iPhone 4S (4.9 oz, .37") while having a bigger and brighter screen. The 5MP camera is capable of shooting HD video but most reviewers found the quality of both still photos and videos to be just OK. Here are some more specs
  • Weight, size: 3.95 oz (112 g), 4.8" x 2.52" x 0.36" (122 x 64 x 9.1 mm)
  • Battery: 1500 mAh 5.5 hours maximum talk time

The Samsung Replenish is also available from Sprint. It's a "green" phone made from recycled plastic with decidedly low end specs. Reviewers (PhoneScoop, PhoneArena, PCWorld, Engadget) panned the lo-res QVGA screen. The phone was also called flimsy feeling, the screen easily scratched and the keyboard not up to BlackBerry standards. Full specs:
  • Weight, size: 4.1 oz (116 g), 4.84" x 2.36" x 0.45" (123 x 60 x 11.4 mm)
  • Battery: 1600 mAh 5.4 hours maximum talk time
  • Screen: 2.8 inches, 240 x 320 pixels
  • Camera: 2 MP, no flash, CIF (352 x 188 px) video capture

  • High Speed Data: EV-DO rev 0
  • Processor: 600 MHz Qualcomm S1 MSM7627-2
  • Internal Storage: 136 MB
  • Ram: 512 MB
  • Maximum SD card size: 32 GB (2 GB card included)
To sum it up, I'm impressed with what I've read about the LG Black. The specs are very similar to the well regarded ZTE Warp. But it's much smaller and lighter with the same screen resolution. It should be a good choice for anyone wanting a high-end Android phone on Boost, especially if you find Warp too large.

I wanted to like the Replenish as I'm a big fan of QWERY keyboards, especially the front facing BlackBerry style found on the Replenish. But after reading the reviews I don't think I want this phone. Reviewers hated the screen's low-res QVGA screen. I'm not surprised as I've never seen a QVGA Android phone that didn't look terrible. If you're on a budget and can live without QWERTY, Boost's Samsung Prevail or Virgin Mobile's Optimus V, which both have decent screens, would be better choices.

  1. My Samsung's keyboard's buttons began to not work about three weeks after I bought the phone.
