AT&T GoPhone to Launch $99.99 Nokia Lumia 520 Prepaid Windows Phone July 26

AT&T announced today that beginning July 26 it will offer the Nokia Lumia 520 Windows phone for $99.99 off contract as part of its GoPhone line of prepaid phones.

The Lumia 520 is virtually identical to T-Mobile's $149.99 prepaid Nokia Lumia 521. It runs the Windows Phone 8 OS and has a 4 inch 480x800px screen and 5 MP camera with 720p HD video recording.

The Lumia comes with several exclusive Nokia apps including Here Maps for turn by turn driving directions and voice guidance. It can work offline using maps stored on the SD card. That means that maps and navigation are available even on GoPhone pay as you go which doesn't include data. Also included is Nokia Music for unlimited free streaming music.

Other specs include:

Internal Memory: 8GB (5GB availalable to user)
External Memory: Support for microSD cards to 64GB, 7 GB of free SkyDrive cloud storage
Camera: 5MP with 720p HD camcorder
Operating System: Windows Phone 8
Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth: A2DP (stereo Bluetooth), HFP 1.5, AVRCP, PBAP, OPP
Dimensions: 2.55 x 0.48 x 4.88 inches (65 x 12 x 124 mm)
Weight: 4.48 oz. (127 gm)
Battery: 1430 mAh, Talk Time - Up to 10 hours, Standby Time - Up to 13 days

The Lumia 520 works with all AT&T GoPhone plans and should also be usable on AT&T postpaid smartphone plans.

  1. So do these phones require a data plan?

  2. No, you can use smartphones without data on GoPhone. A smartphone data plan of required to use them on AT&T postpaid.

  3. Can it be used with Airvoice or any other AT&T MVNO?? I am using an AT&T locked Iphone 3GS right now on Airvoice with no problems. Also does the Lumia uses micro or regular SIM??

    1. The Lumia uses a micro-SIM. It should work on other AT&T MVNOs as long as AT&T hasn't locked down the APN settings.

  4. If you look at the GoPhone Prepaid link: http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=2638
there is a "related media kits" section on the right side that includes a link for "Mobile Phones" that goes to a page for the Lumia 520 ("Windows Joins the GoPhone Portfolio with the Lumia 520")
plus that "related media kits" section on that GoPhone Prepaid page includes a link for iPhone 5. But the page for that other link for iPhone 5 doesn't say anything about GoPhone. Nonetheless, just putting that link for iPhone 5 on the aforementioned GoPhone Prepaid page, indicates to me that either (1) AT&T knows that people are using the iPhone 5 on GoPhone, or (2) AT&T may possibly officially start selling the iPhone 5 for GoPhone.

Would not be surprised if AT&T makes you buy a gophone package of the phone, sim, new monthly plan (if you don't already have GoPhone and can just tell AT&T that you want to transfer your gophone sim to the new phone).
