Total Wireless Offering Bonus Data to Some Walmart Customers

It looks like TracFone's Total Wireless Verizon MVNO is launching a new Walmart-exclusive promotion. A Prepaid Phone News reader sent me photos of displays at two different Walmart stores advertising the new promo. The offer is for an extra GB of data (6 GB instead on 5 GB) on the $35/month Total Wireless plan.

These displays were spotted in Walmart stores in Ogdensburg and Watertown NY. However, the offer did not appear to be available at a Walmart in Kansas and another one in Potsdam, NY. I think there's a good chance that this is a regional test promotion. If any readers have seen this offer at their local Walmart please leave a comment letting us know in what city or town you saw it.

The displays do not make it clear what customers have to do to get this deal. The signs just say "Bonus data is available on the $35 plan purchased at Walmart or Walmart.com". That makes it sound like all you have to do is buy an airtime card from a Walmart store or walmart.com. However the signs and stickers are on phone displays not airtime card ones and similar Walmart exclusive promotions for Verizon Prepaid and Virgin Mobile have required activating a Walmart purchased phone or SIM on a new line of service. I suspect this offer may be for new activations only.

A Total Wireless customer support rep I contacted had not heard of this promotion. There doesn't seem to be anything about it on walmart.com either. If any reader manages to get an extra GB please let us know what you had to do to  get the deal.

  1. I'm assuming your guess that it applies to phones you buy at Walmart is right. I have two Virgin Mobile phones under special service plans that are only available to customers who purchased the phones at Walmart after a certain date. Those plans only show up on the Virgin activation web page once you've entered the IMEI and it recognizes the phone as one from Walmart.

Oddly, I knew about that offer from this website, but I looked and looked and never saw mention of it on either the Walmart website or the Virgin website.

  2. Verizon claims 2 out of 3 of there customers use less than 5GB of data, approximately 95.3 million of there current customers out of 143 million. This is a sales ploy by Walmart. Most people will never use 6 GB. i guess they are trying to compete with AT&T 6GB GoPhone plan. The reality is AT&T had a jump on the prepaid side and Verizon is still trying get their wheels rolling. Verizon now has some low-paid 40/hours a week reps that stand in the prepaid phones aisle at very select Walmarts. They try to show that Verizon Now has Prepaid services that compete with the other guys.

    1. They compete pretty well already given the size of their network, you know, actually being able to use the service.

    2. It's funny because AT&T and Tmo work just fine.

    4. Whatever you say, Farmer John, but that's the tradeoff for living in a pristinely undeveloped area devoid of retail creep, with no shitbag neighbors to disturb you.

Regardless, US Mobile's Verizon service is a better option than TF, lest you wake up one day to find that "their system" ate all your data.

Saw a sign just like the one in the picture at a WalMart in Portland, Oregon. The department was busy and I didn't have time to check details.

  5. I had seen the 6 GB deal at a Walmart in Ocala, FL Thursday morning (18th) but I could've sworn it was on the $35 prepaid card itself. I could be wrong as it was a passing glance as I reached for my 1000-text/$5 tracfone card. ;-)

  6. Dennis--
After seeing this post I stopped by a local Walmart. BOTH the phone packages AND the prepaid cards have the new data promotion (6gb for $35). Additionally on the back of the card, it says ..."Bonus data is available on the $35 plan purchased at Walmart or Walmart.com". I was advised by the mobile sales rep that so long as you purchase the card through Walmart, you will receive the additional data. I have a card but won't add data for about 3 more weeks . Just FYI

  8. I already have a plan with total wireless and it shows 5.86 GB left on my plan so I'm not sure how long it will last but not complaining!!! :-) Also my wife has 4.84 GB left and only 5 days in her cycle, so i KNOW it had to be 6 gb to start with case there ain't NO way she only used 20 mb in a month!

    1. it seem to me, you and your wife do not use much data at all . You should probably downdgrade to the $25/month unlimited talk/text. Then add a $10/3GB (that never expires) data card. If you as a Total Wireless user(s) want to save some money. Why pay for DATA that you never use?

  9. I use total wireless in Roanoke Virginia and recently when I've purchased $10 data card I'm getting 4gb instead of the normal 3

  10. I don't know what the signage said, but I just switched to TW here in North Texas - bought a card and SIM package - and I received 6 GB when activated. Its a shame Customer Support doesn't speak english or we could call and ask. If it's permanent its hard to complain about 4 GB/$10.

  12. I've had total wireless since November (left Verizon after contract and brought my Verizon iPhone 6 Plus) and just bought the card at Walmart that displays the extra GB on the refill card itself. I refilled my account yesterday and it's showing me staring with 6gb on my single line. I love their service and this make it even better (even if I don't "need" the extra GB, I'm already paying the same price anyway and the price is a steal even without the extra gig). I always recommend the service to my friends and family. I've basically kept the same service (Verizon) and doubled my data for half the price. I bought the refill card in NE Ohio if it make a difference.

  13. Great pricing but everything else is a gamble. It is too bad that erical Movil / Tracfone has yet to make things more automated and improve customer service.

  14. Recently signed up with Total. Liked it and decided to add my wife''s phone to it so I needed to change to a different plan. I don't like the fact that if you decide to change to a different plan before your present plan ends, you lose the money paid for the original plan. A prorated refund should be issued.

  15. It is on the service plans. I recently switched my number to Total Wireless and I brought the $35 card. I just checked my balance and I have 5.28 gigabytes left until my service card ends.
