If you're on the lookout for an affordable prepaid smartphone with entry-level specs, Straight Talk Wireless has an option available for you. Just recently, the TracFone subsidiary unveiled the Alcatel ZIP as a suitable device for anyone looking for an entry-level device.

The Alcatel ZIP is equipped with a 5-inch LCD display with a 720x1280 resolution. From within, it is powered by a 1.1GHz Quad-Core processor with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and up to 32GB memory expansion via a microSD card.

To take pictures with this phone, Alcatel has included a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with 720p video resolution. A secondary camera is available in front with a 2-megapixel sensor. Powering the phone is a non-removable Li-Ion battery that lasts up to 6.5 hours of talk time and 10 days in standby mode.

You can pair this phone with one of the unlimited prepaid plans offered by Straight Talk such as:

  • Basic Plan $30 per month - Comes with 1500 voice minutes, unlimited texts, and 100 MB data
  • $35/month Plan - Comes with unlimited talk, text and 2GB of high speed data
  • $45/month Plan - Comes with unlimited talk, text and 10GB of high speed data
  • $55/month Plan - Comes with unlimited talk, text and 15GB of high speed data
  • International Plan $60/month - Comes with unlimited talk, text and 10GB of high speed data, unlimited mobile to mobile calling to Mexico, Canada, China, and India; and unlimited landline calls to selected international destinations.

The data included in Straight Talk's plans is throttled to around 64Kbps once the high speed data limit has been used up.

Both CDMA (Verizon) and GSM (AT&T) versions of the phone are available at Walmart for $50.

  1. The processor, storage, screen and camera are way too trashy for a nearly-2018 budget phone, and Metro's free Blade Z Max just blows this away.

With that said, Wally World's website is selling the TW Zip, and that'd be the one to buy.

  2. I should have heeded the warnings about TracFone, they stole $250 in reserve service from me, thieves and liars is right.

    1. That only applies to paygo.

Monthly plans are easier to track, easier to prove, and easier to dispute if they steal your service.
