Selectel Wireless Discontinuing $75 Per Year Plan

Selectel Wireless Logo
Verizon MVNO Selectel Wireless notified its dealers yesterday that it's discontinuing the $75 annual plan, effective Nov 30. The plan included 2000 minutes and 2000 texts per year. There was no included data, but if you purchased a $10 pay as you go Flex Card data was available at 5¢/MB. The $75 plan only worked with non-LTE Verizon phones.

Selectel's email to dealers doesn't say what happens to current $75 plan users but I suspect that they will need to choose a new plan or a new provider when their current plan term ends. Customers who want to stay with Selectel are facing a sizable price increase. After Nov 30 Selectel's least expensive plan will be $15/month ($180/year) for unlimited texts and 300 minutes and 50 MB of data per month.

There are several more affordable Verizon MVNO alternatives available including:
  • $40 per year for 2000 minutes or texts on Expo Mobile's Pay As You Go plan where a $10 top up lasts 90 days and rates are 2¢/minute and 2¢/text. Unused balances do not roll over, both LTE and non-LTE phones are allowed.
  • $60/year (currently on sale for $55) for 1200 minutes, 1200 texts and 6000 MB on Red Pocket Mobile's $60/year eBay plan that includes 100 minutes, 100 texts and 500 MB per month. Both LTE and non-LTE phones allowed.
  • $80/year for 2000 minutes OR 1600 texts on Page Plus Cellular's Pay As Yo Go "Standard Plan" where an $80 top up is good for 365 days and provides rates of  4¢/minute voice, 5¢/each texts and 10¢/MB data. Unused balances roll-over. Non-LTE phones only
  • $99/year for 6000 minutes, 6000 texts and 6000 MB on Red Pocket Mobile's $99/year eBay plan that includes 500 minutes, 500 texts and 500 MB per month. Both LTE and non-LTE phones allowed.
For customers who are able to use a different network than Verizon there are lots of other possibilities. See our The Best U.S. Prepaid Talk and Text Only Deals post if you don't need data or our The Best US Prepaid Phone Plans For Data Users post if you do.

  1. Is the title supposed to be tear or year plan?

  2. Both of the links in the last paragraph speaking of the best deals without data and with data are actually pointing to the same article. Was that intended?

    1. The links have been fixed. Thanks for the heads up.

  3. Surprised they are still in business honestly. When they lost "postpaid" Verizon coverage, they were toast. With all the price hikes and plan axes stick a fork in them.

    1. Yes, they have dropped a couple of plans but there have been no actual price hikes. They added minutes to plans and include unlimited 2G speed data instead of cutting you off when you run out of high speed data. Also they have great customer service and are one of only two Verizon MVNOs that have paid voice roaming. SMS roaming is still free. The other MVNO is PagePlus and a lot of people avoid Carlos Slim companies like the plague.

  5. Don't forget Puppy Wireless. If 3G data doesn't bother you, their $80 one year plan on Verizon network is compelling. Plan:
    $80 Yearly 3G ONLY : $.015/MIN $.015/SMS, $.015/MB
Short Description: $80 per year 3G CDMA ONLY which deducts $.015 per MIN, $.015 per SMS and $.015 per MB. Balance of $80 does not roll over to the following year.
    Price:
    $80.00

  6. I'll agree that it is time to stick a fork in Selectel!

I don't believe US Mobile is an option for those using a 3G phone

  7. The real issue for those of us with old 3G handsets is that Verizon is discontinuing new activations come June 30, 2018. Which means these MVNO 3G plans will be toast as well. The end of an era, and I'm misty eyed to see it go. I still love and use daily my trusty Samsung Gusto 3 and really, really despise having to get a 4G handset - especially when there aren't any good flip phone options to speak of. the couple they have stink. LTE coverage just isn't up to snuff and I'm afraid I will lose a lot of coverage that I had previously.

    1. My 84-yr-old blind father uses Samsung Haven 3G. Just barely got him on $75 yr. plan with Selectel. Next move will be to find a 4G flip (talking) with tactile keys, if it exists.

  8. My $75 annual plan expires next week. Any updates on whether this plan is totally gone, or grandfathered for existing users?
