Wave7 Says Simple, Ultra and H2O Are the Top MVNOs at Independent Dealers

Telecom  competitive intelligence firm Wave7 Research, has released its fourth quarter, 2017 Independent Prepaid Dealer Survey. The survey tracked prepaid brand distribution and sales at 35 independent, multi-brand dealers in 16 NFL cites. Dealers were asked which prepaid brands they carry and which were their top sellers.

According to Wave7, this quarter's winners were Simple MobileUltra Mobile and H2O Wireless.  Simple Mobile was available at 32 of the 35 dealers and the top seller at 19 of them. Ultra and H2O were both available at 25 stores. Ultra was among the top three in sales at 16 stores and H2O at 11. Dealer's said Simple Mobile's $50 unlimited plan ($45 with autopay) was especially popular with customers.

Wave7 called T-Mobile Prepaid, Lycamobile, Page Plus, GoSmart and Net10 the "secondary winners" this quarter based on their wide availability. T-Mobile Prepaid was in 21 stores with a top three finish in 14. The others were available in about half the stores but were not consistent top three sellers.

Verizon Prepaid, Total Wireless and Rok Mobile were listed as "top gainers". Verizon, which entered the independent prepaid dealer market only last year, was at 13 stores with a top three sales ranking at three. Total, which is also new to the dealer channel was at four stores. Rok which has been marketing heavily to dealers was at three stores, up from just one last quarter. Rok Dealers praised the MVNO's high commission payments

The survey's  losers were Red Pocket, Telcel America and Page Plus. Red Pocket was only at two dealers. Sales of Telcel and Page Plus were weak in spite of being available at quite a few stores. Wave7's Jeff Moore believes Page Plus is being challenged by Verizon Prepaid's move into the dealer channel.

Here's the raw data from the survey (Q3 numbers are in parentheses). Note that the Q4 survey included 35 dealers, the Q3 one only 30.

The many TracFone brands (Simple Mobile, PagePlus, Total Wireless, Net10, Telcel America and GoSmart) dominate the results as they have in previous quarters. With the exception of Page Plus, all the TracFone brands posted gains in both distribution and sales rank.  This is a turnaround from last quarter when all the Trac brands suffered a decline in both distribution and sales.

  1. Is Tmobile prepaid and ATT prepaid the only prepaid carriers that allow their customers to remove a sim card from an unlocked or branded phones to a different unlocked or branded phone? Boost mobile allows device swaps but only through their website or through a rep and that swap takes many steps to update profiles, prls, network resets. Failed to get an answer of sim card device swaps from simple mobile and lyca reps

    1. SIM swapping is supported on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon and most of their MVNOs. Lycamobile SIMs are swappable into any unlocked GSM or T-Mobile branded phone. You may need to change the APN in network settings but that's pretty easy.

  2. I always wondered why TracFone didn't do a better job of nurturing Net10, their only other monthly multi carrier outside of straight talk.perhaps they get a better rate on single carrier brands.

  3. When an independent dealer for a prepaid carrier like Boost or MetroPCS participates in carrier promotional pricing on phones does the dealer eat the reduced price of the phone or does the prepaid carrier subsidize the price?

    1. Boost- Dealer is reimbursed the discounted price but... I will let you know there is absolutely no markup. phones are purchased at full retail price.
