Alcatel's New 1X Phone is the First Android Go Device

Last month, Alcatel unveiled a total of five new smartphone models. Two of these devices, the Alcatel 1X and Alcatel 3V, are set to make their way to the United States. But if there's one smartphone model that's worth looking into, it would definitely be the Alcatel 1X. Why? It's because it is among the first devices to run Android Go.

By now, you probably already know what Android Go is. If not, a simple explanation for this is that Android Go is Google's slick version of Android that's designed to work better on low-end hardware.

The Alcatel 1X is set to be equipped with a 5.3-inch 960x480 resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. The phone runs on 1.28GHz MTK6739 Quad-Core A53 processor with 1GB of RAM and an internal storage of 16GB. It has a microSD card slot for up to 32GB memory expansion.

The camera on the back is equipped with an 8-megapixel sensor interpolated to 13-megapixel. It can capture 1080p video as well. The front-facing camera has a 5-megapixel sensor interpolated to 8-megapixel and can record 720p video. For battery-life, the 1X has a 2,460mAh battery that has a standby time of 547 hours and talk time of 26 hours. It also comes with a fingerprint sensor. Upon release, the device runs Android Oreo (GO Edition).

Alcatel announced that the 1X will retail for under $100, meaning it will be a budget device. This makes it a suitable candidate for Android Go.

There's no announcement on when the 1X will be released yet but it's said to be available in "the coming months." When it's released, the 1X will be available as a GSM device; meaning it will work on AT&T and T-Mobile.

  3. If I understand Android Go, these phones will actually run the current Android OS? (unlike their $200-$400 brethren)

  5. Would rather they put this on mid-range devices so they would perform like flagships.

  6. 1GB phone is an insult. At minimum you need 2GB for proper multi-tasking.

    2. Android Go is intended primarily for the developing world where even a low-end phone is a major expense for the average family. Google claims Android Go works well on phones with as little as 512 MB of RAM. All the Android One phones I've seen announced so far have 1 GB RAM. Until these phones are actually available no one really knows how well they will perform.
