MetroPCS' New Switcher Promos Include Free Phones and a $100 Rebate

As expected, T-Mobile has revamped its promotional offers for customers who switch to its MetroPCS prepaid service. The new offers aren't as bad as rumours predicted, but they considerably less attractive than the promotions they replace.

The new lead offer, which Metro is calling "Switch to MetroPCS Today and get TWO Months Unlimited Data Free"gives customers who port a number to MetroPCS a $100 Visa Gift Card after their first two months of paid service. The offer requires the port in of a mobile number that is not on the T-Mobile network and hasn't been on MetroPCS for at least 90 days. To qualify for the rebate, the ported number must be activated on either the $50 pr $60 Unlimited plan. The rebate offer is also available with MetroPCS' ongoing  4 Lines of Unlimited For $100 promo which lets gives you two lines of the $50 plan on the same account for $80, three lines for $90, four lines for $100 or five lines for $125. However there's a limit of one $100 rebate per account so no matter how many lines you add you only get a single rebate. There's also a $10 per line activation fee. The rebate offer is not available in Connecticut, Rhode Island or the Miami/Dade metro.

The $50 plan includes unlimited talk, messaging and data with some limitations. Restrictions on the plan include video streaming  limited to 480p quality, and no hotspot use. The $60 plan offers unthrottled video streaming and includes 10 GB of high speed hotspot per month. On both plans data is subject to de-prioritization after 35 GB is used in a month.

MetroPCS' free iPhone SE off has ended but customers switching to MetroPCS are still eligible for some lesser free phones. The following devices are free after instant rebate; Samsung Galaxy J3 Prime, LG Aristo 2, Motorola Moto E4, ZTE Avid 4 and Coolpad Defiant. Switchers are also eligible for $60 off any other phone sold by MetroPCS. MetroPCS also raised the prices of several phones today making the $60 off less of a deal. The iPhone SE 32 GB is now $199, up from $149 and the iPhone 6s 32 GB's price went from $299 to $399.

The $100 rebate and free phone offers are only available at MetroPCS stores, not online.

  1. Slowly but surely Metro Pcs is losing its appeal, the 10 dollar activation fee is not a positive new thing.
At metro stores including corporate stores even if you are upgrading you have to pay that fee that no one had to pay before copying cricket and their 25 buck fee.
Better to buy an unlocked phone then get hit over the head with their fees.

    1. Metro gives a $5 discount/line for the promo in-store activation but you don't think that is "positive." You can just skip the promo and pay $15 activation in store if you prefer.

  2. Agreed, no place for activation fees in a competitive marketplace. In my area all the dealers are owned by the same dishonest individual.

If MetroPCS wants my business they need to make their promotions available online and eliminate hot-spot charges.

    1. Haha. That is like saying there is no place for dealer prep charges when buying a car.
Metro only charges extra for hotspot on the bargain $50/month unlimited plan.

  3. Wow this is certainly a disappointment. The only saving grace corporate stores had over dealers was the free activation fee. I called to switch phones . Tried to use the automated service but was transferred o agent and was told about a $10 fee for switching phones. Bad coverage now with fees makes it a bit brainier to go somewhere else. 6 months to unlock phones now also suck

    1. It's infuriating that on a GSM network one still has to call in to switch phones. T-Mobile has done a great job exploiting the "Metro's backend systems were originally configured that way" to keep milking customers.

  4. With the $80 for two unlimited lines deal, what would it cost if I wanted the $60 plan instead of the $50 one? Would both lines be on the $60 plan or just one?
What makes the Metro $80 for two lines deal better than the Simple Mobile $75 for two lines deal?

  5. Quarter after quarter MetroPCS keeps adding lots of subscribers, and still has millions more customers and lines than Cricket. The network keeps growing and getting faster every month, and the phone deals are still good.
    This will continue.

    1. Maybe they've noticed that most people buying these aforementioned older generation iPhones can't afford to be paying full retail upfront to Metro (or Apple, or whoever) for the newer model iPhones?

But if you can afford to spring for an iPhone X, more power to you. BYOD and pick the carrier that works best for you.

  7. I am still seeing the free iPhone ad in my browser: https://www.metropcs.com/iPhoneSEOnUs?cid=dis%7CGM%7CBFPEiPhone?_217567560_416695054_97639119_20899551

  8. Hey dennis, I did a chat with Metro and they told me that a TMobile locked phone will not work on Metro. Do you know if that is true? I thought I had heard otherwise.

    1. Not true. Phones locked to T-Mobile USA do work on MetroPCS.

    2. My active Lycamobile SIM would not work in a new Tmo prepaid REVVL phone. SIM error. Hopefully MetroPCS not affected by this new policy.
