Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week: Apr 15 - Apr 21

Motorola Moto G5 Plus
Welcome to the latest edition of Prepaid Phone News' Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week feature. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've found online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the universal unlocked Motorola Moto G5 Plus  which is on sale at B&H for $199.99 for the 32 GB model and $249.99 for the 64 GB variant. B&H's prices for the standard G5 Plus are actually lower than what Amazon is charging for their bootloader locked Prime Exclusive models of the the G5 Plus.

The regular price of the 64 GB G5 Plus is $299.99 for the 64 GB model and $229.99 for the 32 GB version. The 64 GB model has 4 GB of RAM vs 2 GB for the 32 GB one. I recommend the 64 GB version as double the RAM should give a noticeable performance boost.

Both versions have a Snapdragon 625 SOC, 5.2 inch 1920x1080px IPS display, memory card slot, headphone jack, fingerprint sensor, dual band WiFi, 12 MP main camera and 5 MP front cameras. The 3000 mAh battery is not user replaceable. The G5 Plus is a "universal unlocked" phone that works on all four US national operators and most international carriers. There's support for quad-band GSM; CDMA 800, 850 and 1900; UMTS/HSPA+ bands 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8 and LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 25, 26, 38, 41 and 66. VoLTE is supported on T-Mobile and Verizon. Wi-Fi calling is also supported on T-Mobile. The G5 Plus ships with Android 7.0 Nougat. Motorola says it will receive an upgrade to Android Oreo at some point.

    1. The plan includes 1 GB per month. The current price is $49.99/year. I have no idea what the price will be a year from now when the plan renews.

  4. Regarding the 12 month Freed Pop plan, is there any way to use that to get hotspot? If yes, what's a good, but very cheap phone to use primarily for this purpose — ideally new, but if not, then used?

    Thanks.

    1. On FreedomPop/AT&T hotspot is hot or miss. It's blocked on all iPhones amd most carrier branded phones unless they are jail broken or rooted. Hotspot works for me on a factory unlocked Galaxy S7 but not on a locked AT&T LG G4. I don't have experience with any other devices so I can't recommend any.

    2. My Blu r1hd does high speed tethering from either sim card with FreedomPop, in fact I haven't had a problem tethering from it with any GSM carrier.

  6. At home my AT&T LTE connection is on band 30. Does the Moto G5 Plus not have band 30? Or maybe is 30 a subset of one of those other bands?

    4. Band 30 is the 2300 Mhz WCS band. AT&T is using it to increase speeds and capacity, primarily in areas of high population density. AFAIK, there aren't any markets that only have band 30 so it's a nice to have, but not essential band to have in terms of coverage. If's a wide 30 Mhz channel so it should deliver excellents speeds.

    5. Thanks, Dennis. This is not normally a high population density area, but it's a tourist town so the population and the need for cell capacity increases dramatically in the summer especially during a couple of huge festivals here. Band 30 seems like a good solution to these capacity issues.

  8. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that there are hardly any good deals on prepaid phones anymore? Like at Best Buy or Target

    1. That just means it's time to buy unlocked right now.

    2. Need to wait it out. Only thing I would buy now is unlocked. I unlocked most of my prepaid devices before the crackdown started. I have sufficient supply to last until the B71 stuff becomes mainstream.

Just my speculation, but right now is the end of tax season and businesses are trying to encourage people to spend more of any refund versus save money.
It's over seven months away, but after following this site for a few years it seems the very best time for overall deals is the holiday shopping season.

  11. The US and British governments are telling companies to steer clear of Chinese smartphone maker ZTE. US Commerce Department said Monday it will prohibit American companies from selling products to ZTE, which violated the terms of a deal made after the U.S. alleged that ZTE skirted sanctions against North Korea and Iran.

The move will sever business dealings between ZTE and U.S. firms for up to seven years. Some ZTE smartphones sold in the U.S. are equipped with Qualcomm chips. Their stock fell 1.7%.

Cybersecurity officials in the U.K. warned mobile carriers to avoid using ZTE equipment because of concern that China could use the technology to infiltrate telecommunications infrastructure.

  12. Currently in an area where cell coverage is inconsistent on MetroPCS and want to test coverages on different carriers. Buying a Moto E4 Plus at Best Buy which is universally unlocked. Will also buy a Cricket sim and $40 refill card to receive the $50 discount on the Moto E4 Plus. For month #1 will test Cricket's coverage, month #2 want to test Boost Mobile coverage. Can I remove the Cricket sim card from the Moto E4 Plus and insert the Boost Mobile sim card and receive Boost Mobile coverage or does Cricket insert a lock on my unlocked Moto E4 Plus that prevents me from switching to Boost Mobile to test their coverage for the second month?

    1. No, Cricket will not lock your phone. Factory unlocked phones are unlocked for life, no carrier van lock them.

  14. Very true. Zte were putting out some nice garbage but tight on bootloader lock down. Huawei had liberal bootloader unlock policy, but managed to keep sets pretty well locked down other ways. Still, i actually liked some of the extra privacy control options in huawei's rom.

You can still keep in touch for calls and sms with the new BLU X060 X Link.
It's a watch, and you don't have to carry a phone to use it.
Works on T-Mobile, with roaming if you get the right plan.
Only $49.99. Sold out for now.
