Updated: Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week: May 20 - May 26

Motorola Moto E4
Welcome to the latest edition of Prepaid Phone News' Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week feature. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've found online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the Verizon Prepaid Motorola Moto E4 with $30 of bundled airtime for $51. The phone with $40 of airtime is $61. If you can use the airtime that makes the effective price of the phone just $21. Verizon's regular price for the E4 was $69.99.

The deep discount is undoubtedly due to the release of the E4's successor, the E5 Play on Verizon Prepaid. However the E5 Play costs $94.95 and is only a slight upgrade (5.2" vs 5" screen, Oreo vs Nougat).

The Moto E4 runs Android 7.1 Nougat and has a Snapdragon 425 SOC, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, a 5 inch 720x1280 IPS screen, 8 MP rear and 5 MP front cameras, fingerprint sensor, memory card slot, removable battery and dual band Wi-Fi.

It's possible to use the Verizon Prepaid Moto E4 on Verizon MVNOs if it's been released and unlocked by Verizon. Officially Verizon requires that the phone be activated on Verizon Prepaid and $75 in airtime added before it can be released, although some users have reported getting E4s released after adding only $40, as always YMMV.

At one time it was possible to inexpensively (about $2)  unlock the Verizon Prepaid Moto E4 and use it on GSM networks including AT&T and T-Mobile. Verizon and Motorola seemed to have plugged that loophole on newer E4s, but if you are lucky you might get an unlockable old stock phone. For detailed unlocking instructions see the Wiki in this Slickdeals thread.

  2. I got the At&t Prepaid ZTE Blade Spark free with airtime purchase. Its a pretty nice phone and was in new condition with a box. Better specs than the Moto E. One more thing, you can take advantage of the free Blade Spark deal even if you have an existing line. Just don't use the At&t sim card included with the phone. The phone must activated on At&t for six months before unlock.

    1. If all you need is a budget phone then the Verizon E4 and Plus are better deals, as is the $100 clearance G5P.

  3. Why doesn't the HSN TracFone bundle Galaxy J7 Pro have Band 13?
They only say Band 4 & 5 ? Will this reduce ability to pick up Verizon's signal?

Question to Anonymous at 12:26 PM (if you're still reading the site):

Were you able to add the airtime on your existing line? I'm desperately needing a different phone to use on an existing AT&T Prepaid line that has a credit balance I don't want to lose by porting the number out; afterwards I know a family member on an AT&T MVNO that can use the locked device thereafter.

    1. When you purchase the airtime with the free phone bundle, it comes as a refill card with a PIN. You can add it to any account. I simply added the pin to my existing account.

  5. Is there a way to do WiFi calling on a cheap paygo plan in the $3/month range? I am deep in a building and get poor cellular signal. I don’t want to pay $15 for republic unlimited tnt, but that’s the right idea.

  6. What's the author have against T-Mobile Prepaid?

They have a bunch of phones for free if you purchase a couple months of service in advance.

    1. That offer appears to have ended. It used to be here: T-Mobile Prepaid deals hub but it's gone now.

    2. It's in-store only. Two levels of phones. Free with $100 refill or $225 refill.

    3. It was a limited time offer that was only available in stores but was adverised on T-Mobile's Prepaid deals page. Here's our original coverage of the offer: T-Mobile Offering a Free Smartphone With at Least $100 Airtime Purchase | Prepaid Phone News.

    4. They may not be advertising it on the web this time. Deal is live in-store right now.

    5. Tmo changed the deal to require $150 airtime. And it had to be applied to the new phone activation - electronic PIN applied in store.

  8. The best deal will be the upcoming Moto g6.

Add an airtime card to get it for $200 from Best Buy.

It's only worth it if you're upgrading from a 16GB burner, though.

If you have the G5/s Plus, Honor 7x or Nokia 6.1, then you should wait to see if it drops down to $200 on Black Friday.

  10. Thanks once again, Dennis!

HSN TracFone Samsung J3 purchased for my Dad. No problem moving service over from last year's Samsung Sky HSN bundle phone. Had to call tracfone to unlock the Sky (chat wouldn't do it), but they did send me the unlock codes.

Now, how do I test that it's actually unlocked? It's a SM-S320VL, so Verizon.

    1. I'm amazed you actually got TracFone to unlock your phone. Yours us the first report I've seen of someone actually getting a phone unlocked by TracFone.

When you insert a SIM from another carrier that's not owned by TracFone, the phone should prompt you for the unlock code and when you should get a message confirmin g the unlock after you enter it.

I believe that the SM-S320VL only supports Verizon bands so even unlocked it is really only usable on Verizon and Verizon MVNOs.

  12. A CA jury just awarded Apple $539 in damages because Samsung violated several iPhone patents. This trial was required by the US Supreme Ct. Samsung had already agreed to pay Apple $548M based on another judge's ruling while their appeal was being heard. The first jury awarded Apple $1.05 Billion in damages, so Samsung may be relieved to owe Apple the $539M. Numerous older Samsung phones were already banned for sale in the US after Samsung finally admitted violating the Apple patents.

    1. Copyrights, patents, licensing, trade secrets and trademarks are all just anti-competitive monopolies by any other name.

If Apple actually sold good phones at reasonable prices (not this 300% markup BS) then nobody would be buying Samsungs in the first place.

This is one time when pure, unfettered capitalism would be great for consumers, if only to kickstart a stagnant smartphone market where the biggest players rest on their paten- I mean laurels and pay off investors instead of doubling down on R&D.
