Buy the iPhone SE and Get a Free Month of Service from Walmart Family Mobile

Apple's iPhone SE device has been available for quite some time now. And even though so many new iPhone models have come out, the iPhone SE continues to be a capable device. Now, it looks like Walmart Family Mobile is running a promotion for anyone who buys an iPhone SE.

The promotion shows that anyone who buys the iPhone SE for $139 will be getting a free month of service with the MVNO. The plan available with this promotion is regularly priced at $29.88 per month. It also includes unlimited talk, text and 3GB of 4G LTE data.

The particular iPhone SE model being sold by Walmart Family Mobile comes with a 4-inch display, runs on 2GB of RAM, and has 32GB of internal storage. Camera-wise, the phone is able to take photos with its 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with an f/2.2 aperture. There is a 1.2-megapixel selfie camera included as well. It houses a 1624mAh battery in the back.

The iPhone SE may be a couple of years old but it still is being sold by Apple for $349. If you decide to get Walmart's offer, you get to save $210. But you also have to keep the phone active under the T-Mobile network for a year before you can use it with another MVNO or carrier.

Once the free month of service is over, you can choose to retain the plan or switch to another one. You can opt for one of these other plans offered by Walmart Family Mobile:

  • $24.88 per month - comes with 1GB of high speed data
  • $39.88 per month - comes with 9GB of high speed data
  • $49.88 per month - comes with unlimited LTE data
These plans all include unlimited talk and text. There is also a data prioritization policy where data speeds get temporarily slowed down during heavy network traffic once you have consumed over 32GB of LTE data in one month.

The plans do not include taxes and fees. Mobile hotspot/tethering is prohibited.

  1. Slimy Slim & the customer disservice circus. No thanks.

  2. I'd wait to see if the rumored SE 2 gets confirmed.

After all, if Apple devices are famed for their longevity, what's a few more months?

  3. T-mobile native network coverage (no 600mhz) and locked for 1 yr ?

    1. Apple is doing just fine selling phones with no 600 MHz.

    2. There is voice and text roaming on Walmart Family Mobile if I recall correctly.

    3. There definitely was voice and text roaming when T-Mobile owned Family Mobile. There were some reports by users that they lost roaming when TracFone acquired Family Mobile. The Family Mobile coverage map does show roaming, for what it's worth.

    4. "Apple is doing just fine selling phones with no 600 MHz."

And crippled and out-of-date in other ways (not just 600 mhz) compared to better Android products. That's why I won't go to iPhone: it's a step down, and a diminished user experience more focused on the whims of Apple management than on user needs.

  4. is this post paid service bc the article says doesn't include taxes and fees like post paid service? also how much more are the taxes and fees? are they over 20% like most post paid plans?

    1. Family Mobile is prepaid. All of TracFone's brands, including Family Mobile, collect all applicable state and local point of sale taxes (sales tax, MTS in California, e911 fees in some states) plus 1.5% for the Federal USF and a 0.2% cost recovery fee. See Making Sense of Taxes on Prepaid Cell Phone Plans and Airtime | Prepaid Phone News for more about the taxes and fees charged by various prepaid operators.

  5. I'd still go with MetroPCS for better store support and network priority.

    1. "Store support"=shady dealers.

    2. Store support at MetroPCS is poor compared to Walmart.

Store support, after all, starts with opening the store!

Walmart = typically open 24 hours.

MetroPCS = typically 10 AM to 8 PM... less than half of the time Walmart is open. Not only that, the lazy sluggards sleep in pretty late.

    3. And some Metro stores don't even stay open all the way until the listed closing time.

I've stopped by mall kiosk and freestanding Metro stores before the 7 or 8 pm closing time, and the employees have already abandoned it 30 minutes early...

Videogames don't knock off work early and go home and play themselves, you know. Someone's got to do it.

    5. Have any of you people shopped at Walmart? Their electronic section rarely has an employee knowledgeable with the products they sell. No way I'd buy wireless service from Walmart, its a disaster.

    6. Anyone who's walked past some of these mall Metro PCS kiosks or the strip mall PCS stores across from the single wides will understand the "theft of service" observations in no one home during regular business hours.

Walmart has no "electronics" employees often after 9 PM, but there are usually a couple knowledgeable overnight stockers available to help with prepaid questions if someone with a walkie talkie calls one over for you.

  6. metroPCS starting today port 1 number and get up to 4 iPhone SE free. only 1 number port required and can be combined with 4 for $100. expect dealers to push really hard to sell insurance, accessories, etc. but it is not required for the promotion. with the $10 activation fee per line you should be able to get out the door for $140 flat with 4 SE's

    1. Are metro iphone se phones cdma and gsm capable models?

    2. Both SE models work on CDMA, but they have different LTE bands.
