Updated 7/4: Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week: July 1 - July 7

Welcome to the latest edition of Prepaid Phone News' Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week feature. Here are the best current deals on prepaid and unlocked phones that I've found online and in stores.

This week's Deal of the Week is the TracFone iPhone 6s 32 GB for $199.99 with airtime purchase and code TF50OFF TF40OFF. That's $100 off TracFone's regular price of $299.99. The cheapest TracFone airtime is $15 making the total cost $214.99.

This is a deal is part of a larger promotion at TracFone and sister brands Total Wireless and Straight Talk. The TF50OFF TF40OFF code takes 40% off, up to a maximum of $100, the price of any TracFone when purchased with airtime. The $214.99 iPhone SE with airtime bundle is excluded from this offer.

For Total Wireless customers, the code is TW50OFF TW40OFF and it takes 40%. up to $100, off any phone plus airtime. Total Wireless airtime starts at $25. A couple of the better deals at Total Wireless with the code and airtime purchase are the reconditioned iPhone SE 32 GB for  $49.50 $59.40 or the brand new iPhone 6 32 GB for $89.50 $107.40.

Straight Talk has a similar coupon, ST50OFF but it's only good on reconditioned iPhones, not Android devices or new iPhones. Straight Talk airtime prices start at $35. With the code and airtime purchase the reconditioned iPhone SE 32 GB is $49.99 and the reconditioned iPhone 6 32 GB is $74.50.

Update 7/2/18: Tracfone has replaced the TF50OFF coupon with a TF40OFF coupon which takes 40% instead of 50% the price of phones when purchased tith airtime. The Total Wireless TW50OFF 50% off coupon has also been replaced with a TW40OFF 40% off coupon. Straight Talk's ST50OFF 50% coupon is still working. The maximum discount for all of the coupons is still $100.

Keep in mind that phones from TracFone brands are extra tightly locked and third party unlocking services are generally not able to unlock them. TracFone requires the phone to be used for 12 months on the TracFone brand is was sold for before they will unlock it. After 12 months, TracFone will unlock iPhones but will refuse to unlock many Android phones, saying the phones aren't capable of being unlocked and offering to buy them back for a fraction of their original cost.

  1. T-Mobile is selling the LG G6 for only $360 with plan of $50 or more (first month). You might have to buy a $10 SIM card. Taxes extra.

    1. SIM included with G6 when you buy online.

    2. You can buy a new, unlocked G6 on Amazon for about $380 from 3rd party sellers or around $400 new from Amazon.

    3. If you venture into the Wild West of eBay and Amazon for a G6, know that there are five versions, each with different LTE Band support. Also, unless you buy New from an authorized LG dealer, you won't have a warranty. LG doesn't transfer the warranty to the second purchaser. Buying the right version, new, from Amazon is probably the safest alternative to a carrier G6 if you aren't a gambler.

    4. Amazon doesn't tell you they are selling the US997 Unlocked G6 model for both the Standard and Prime deals. It lacks AT&T Bands 29 and 30, and T-Mobile Band 66 support that are present on carrier versions H871 and H872. You only get the basic bands for those carriers with the "Amazon-sold" phones.
Some eBay dealers sell the Verizon VS988 for use on T-Mobile, but they don't tell you that it lacks Band 12, which puts a BIG dent in Tmo coverage. Some ads for this phone even say that it includes Band 12 (LG says it does not).

Bottom line: These deals don't compare to the T-Mobile $360 deal if you plan to use the T-Mobile network. And the "Amazon-sold" G6 deals and eBay Verizon VS 988 are not optimal for AT&T LTE use.

  2. Got the Tracfone 6s - thanks. And the transfer from my old TF was unbelievably fast online. The whole process was literally about 3 minutes, with all buckets moved over accurately. I always have my fingers crossed doing stuff like that with TF.

  5. Hi Dennis & Christine - I just wanted to let you know that I tried the Tracfone and TotalWireless sites this morning (Monday July 2, 2018) with the TF50OFF and TW50OFF discount codes respectively and being careful to pay attention to what you said about iPhone SE not available discounted on Tracfone's site. I tried it in a couple different browsers but couldn't make their respective discount codes work at either site so, eventually, I looked the codes up on Google and it appears that the 50% off promotion ended June 30th. So I tried entering other codes and it turns out that TF40OFF and TW40OFF both work in their respective sites for a 40% discount. So there was only a 10% difference and I very much appreciate you having those deals listed at the top of the SALE page because I otherwise would not have gone to either site this morning and wouldn't have gotten a new iPhone SE with 1 month service plan for $108 from TotalWireless. I have loved this site for several years now and you have helped me score great deals a number of times. I figured it was about time I should say thank you!

    3. For $200.00 the Unlocked G6Play is a good deal. Do you own one or are you just making assumptions? Are you comparing this to a $500.00 + phone? Call quality is very good/excellent on ATT, battery life is excellent, screen is great.

    4. I still think Motorola dropped the ball this year releasing the G series
No G6 plus version for the USA
      Lack of waterproofing (really Moto?)
The Moto G series gets how many software updates and security patches?

    5. "Daily reminder that G6 Play is an entry-level, plastic budget phone with low pixel count and below average call quality."

Those buzzwords aren't just meaningless and flat out wrong, they also seem to be coming from someone who's never paid less than $700/yr for a tiny slab of glass.

The fact is, Moto's g6 Play has a solid 427 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, decent call quality, as well as adequate pixels for a screen that's infinitely smaller than a television.

Oreo's optimizations also smooth out the experience on less-than-optimal hardware the same way Kitkat once did, drastically improving the user experience compared to other budget phones still running Nougat or below.

So while the g6 Play isn't necessarily top of the line or solidly mid-range, it's still noticeably better spec-wise than any locked, truly entry-level phone in the sub-$200 price range.

There's also the fact that Moto didn't release the g6 Plus, while the regular g6 is only a modest upgrade from the Play.

That makes this a "holdout year" where the only reason to even buy a g6 device is to get through one more year until the g7's drop.

The g6 Play is perfect for that, as it's decently capable at a decent price that'll still let you guiltlessly sockdrawer it when the time comes.

"Is the unlocked Moto 6G Play whitelised for the Verizon network ? Will they get volte and wifi calling if activated on Verizon ?"

Yes to everything except wifi calling, which carries only offer on their branded, bloated, and sim-locked in-house devices.

If you absolutely need wifi calling because of poor in-house reception, you're pretty much SOL.

Verizon Prepaid phones below $400 won't even come close to (let alone surpass) the unlocked $150 (with airtime) g6 Play.

Even the branded version only has half the storage and 66% of the RAM.

The $408 Z2 Play is actually Verizon's cheapest entry-level wifi calling device that's not a complete dumpster fire by today's standards, although the high price tag and limited options are exactly why most people don't care about wifi calling anymore.

  8. Dennis - I think you need to update the MetroPCS section of this post, based on the leaked deals sheet from Reddit, including:

    * $150 discount on any phone, not just iPhones, by porting

    * free iPhone SE with port is limited to 2 handsets

    * existing customers add a line for 50% discount on any phone

  9. Anyone ordered from boost before? I bought an E4 Plus and it came in a Motorola branded box just like the unlocked ones but with an IMEI sticker over the barcodes. Wondering if it’s unlocked or if it locks to boost if you turn it on with the sim included? Anyone know?

  11. T-Mobile had the fastest average 4G LTE speeds among the major four U.S. carriers for Q2 2018. That’s according to Ookla speed test data, which shows T-Mobile had an average LTE download speed of 31a.8Mbps and an average LTE upload speed of 11.9Mbps in the second quarter. T-Mobile has had the fastest average 4G LTE speeds in Ookla’s speed test data for 18 quarters straight.
