UNREAL Mobile Now Operating Under AT&T's Network

unreal-mobile-now-att-network
Back in June, FreedomPop launched a new MVNO called UNREAL Mobile. The highlight of the MVNO's launch was its offering of Unlimited Everything plans under Sprint's network. Starting at $10/month, these seemed like a great deal for anyone interested in the plans which included unlimited voice, messaging, and 1GB of 4G LTE data.

Fast-forward to today, it looks like the MVNO is ready to expand its coverage.

Earlier today, UNREAL Mobile announced that it will be extending its coverage to AT&T's network. The announcement shows that the FreedomPop-owned brand will be offering the same plans and pricing for customers who opt for AT&T's network. There is one small catch, however, since both talk and text will be available via VoIP.

The decision to expand coverage comes after executives of UNREAL Mobile realized they were turning away massive numbers of would-be customers.

"We have had over 50,000 people bring their existing phone to UNREAL Mobile, but until today, only certain Sprint devices worked and most of those devices did not qualify. That put us in the unfortunate position of having to turn customers away. With the addition of GSM SIMs from one of the top nationwide networks, mobile users across the U.S. can now access our lowest-cost service, and on the nation's best networks." - UNREAL Mobile General Manager, Samantha Lewe

As for pricing, UNREAL's AT&T-based plans include the following choices:

  • $10 per month - comes with 1GB 4G LTE data
  • $20 per month - comes with 3GB 4G LTE data
  • $30 per month - comes with 5GB 4G LTE data

These plans are equipped with unlimited talk and text using UNREAL Mobile's VoIP app that can be downloaded on both Android and iOS devices. Taxes and fees are included for a limited time period. For privacy and encryption, the plans come with a VPN, ad blocker, and up to 500MB month-to-month data rollover.

  2. The business climate for MVNOs isn't good. I don't see how UNREAL can stay alive with this business model.

  3. I firstly thought "who needs Sprint now?" and then I saw the number is VoIP... Fck it.

  4. if calls are directed through voip whatz the difference between freedompop and unreal. if you pay 50 dollars yearly you will get the same 10 dollar plan with freedompop. Why I have to pay 70 dollars more yearly to unreal mobile.

    1. That's my first thought too. Freedompop's yearly $50 plan sounds the same as Unreal's $120 yearly plan. Are we missing something?

    2. unreal $10 plan has unlimited throttled data after the 1gb LTE data.

  5. Note: You can use the native talk and text on ATT network. The app is only if you're in a low signal area and want to use wifi for VOIP calls and texts. I will move my aunt from Cricket $30 plan to this $10 plan.

  6. I stand corrected...the GSM ATT service is all VOIP with the app. No native talk/text.

  7. Sounds shady or unreal

  8. Would be great if someone with Unreal on Att can inform on voice & data quality experience. Have been trying out the beta of Google Voice that offers Voip on Lte..pretty good so far!

  9. You had me until VOIP.

  10. FreedomPop is very dishonest. Avoid them

  11. geez the voip naysayers should just shutup and go away if they don't like this for their phones. at least it'll be on at&t -- and not sprint and not tmobile since tmo has problems going further inside my house. personally will give this unreal on at&t a chance. anyways mostly on wifi and don't see the harm. would be switching one of my backup phones to this. already have the FP AT&T LTE sim on that backup phone using GV with the new beta voip which works and actually rings on my incoming calls (no need for hangouts which has been problematic for me). unreal would be a step up for that phone. yeah would just want the basic $10 at&t 1gb LTE data for my purposes.

  12. Yes talk and text on GSM is really UNREAL.

  13. How to order new plan?.. Its not taking my BYOD phone IMEI...

  14. Please explain to me why VOIP is so bad?

  15. The Unreal customer service rep on Slickdeals says only talk is VOIP. Text is native.

    1. but later he says the unreal app handles both calls and texts. my strong guess is unreal is just FP AT&T LTE but rebranded with different plans. won't know for sure until actually try out unreal. so my guess is text not native on unreal.

  16. I just received my UNREAL GSM SIM card on 09/10/2018. I am using it in an unlocked iPhone 7 Plus. It uses AT&T's network. In the UNREAL app under the Account tab it says Settings. Under Settings it says Incoming Call -> Receive Call via Cellular or UNREAL App (VOIP). I have cellular checked off. I just drove from Fort Worth, TX to my home 20 miles south of Fort Worth during rush hour traffic and I spent 40 minutes on the phone talking to my sister in Arlington on her cell phone. No chop, no dropped words, no stutter, no dropped call. She said I sounded fine. So far I am very happy with the service. The ping averages around 150 seconds, so the latency is too high to support VOIP calls over cellular data without QoS packet marking. The call had to be going over the legacy, circuit switched, 3G network for voice and not the packet switched data network (4G LTE) that VOIP uses. The phone call also did not show up as used data for my UNREAL account so it did not touch my data allotment.

    1. how about texts? through the app or really native?

    2. Texting is only through the UNREAL app, not the native iMessage app.

  17. Unrealmobile CDMA did not cut it. I left them as data is throttled and they did not respond to my request about it. Seems like for a bit more, Red Pocket would be better and 5Gb of data; $20 without promo & $17 with. But I left for Sprint free unlimited.

  18. UNREAL sent me an email advertising a 99¢ sim card. so, ordered the 99¢ UNREAL sim with the free 14day trial of the 5gb plan. free shipping. my guess is should get the sim next week? paid the 99¢ with my paypal. but forgot that freedompop does funny things the first time when you use paypal on an account. UNREAL (freedompop) charged an extra 99¢ but my guess is that is to check that the paypal works and the extra 99¢ charge should disappear after a couple business days(?). FP did something like this on one of my FP lines before when put my paypal on the line as a source of payment but it was an annoying $20 temporary charge to check that the paypal can pay for data overage charges -- the $20 charge disappeared after a couple days. probably the same situation with the extra 99¢ charge. anyways be alert to this if you get your UNREAL sim card by using your paypal. oh they also try to get you to order a second sim card for 1¢ ....

anyways, you have to select a phone number when you order the sim card, and they send you a password for your new account at the my.unrealmobile.com website. the my unrealmobile site for accessing your account looks just like the my freedompop site. so expecting UNREAL to be just like FP for the most part.

oh, will most likely switch to the $10 plan with 1gb LTE (and unlimited throttled data afterwards) at the end of the 14day free trial period.

    1. got an email telling me that my UNREAL sim card has been shipped. no tracking code? the email includes setup instructions. note #3 that need the UNREAL app for both calling and texting. seems like regular freedompop to me but rebranded as UNREAL. this tells me: voip calls and NOT native texts. myself personally won't know for sure until get the UNREAL sim card to see what happens if you don't use the app.

      ---

When you receive your order, follow these easy steps to activate your service in seconds:

      1. Insert SIM Card into your device

      2. Set up your Device APN (WiFi required).

      FOR ANDROID DEVICES:
Go to Settings > Network Connections > More > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
(some phones may have different menu paths)
Click on Add or '+' and set unreal.com.attz as your APN and save.

      FOR iOS DEVICES:
Open Safari and go to unrealmobile.com/iosapn.
      Click "Create APN".

For more information on APN Settings, click here. (https://help.unrealmobile.com/discussion/118/getting-started-with-your-lte-sim-card)

      3. Download the "UNREAL Mobile" APP (Required for calling and texting) available on Google Play store and Apple App store.

    2. got my UNREAL sim card today. put this UNREAL sim card in my backup iphone. UNREAL 14 day free trial plus a couple extra days for 16 days total to play with this. they added a few more days to account for mailing. yes it came with the 5gb. can select to receive incoming calls to only be via cellular or via the UNREAL app. of course, first choice is to be via cellular, although can see going via the app if cellular reception is bad and all you have is wifi. so yeah, receive calls via cellular. no brainer there really. receiving incoming calls via cellular is a game changer (particularly when comparing UNREAL with regular FP). but outgoing calls can only be done via the UNREAL app. the cellular incoming calls seem to have no lag and sound great like on my AT&T Prepaid line in my area. the voip outgoing calls via the UNREAL app seem okay but has a bit of lag. you may certainly notice the lag if you end up overtalking too fast with whomever you may make an outgoing call to. all texting using the UNREAL line has to be done through the UNREAL app. no texting via the default messaging/messages app on the phone. so my guess is to expect setting up any 2FA verification to fail on an UNREAL number like on regular freedompop -- but give it a try yourself. the little retail hanger package folder the SIM cards comes in says on the back that whichever plan you get will come with VPN Service, AD Blocker, Data Rollover (but rollover is only up to 500mb each month). you have to turn on that VPN if you want to use that. not sure about the AD Blocker. Rollover is what catches my eye. UNREAL seems okay for my purposes as a backup line. so unless change my mind in 16 days, will most likely switch the UNREAL plan to the $10 plan with the 1gb LTE data with reduced speeds afterwards.

already have a FP freebie line but paying $4 extra for rollover which was great before where rolled over all leftover data, but now it seems for all practical purposes on FP, with the recent reduction in free data particularly from friends, can only do 250mb rollover of data for that $4 extra service every month. if you have already accumulated a lot of rollover data on FP and really use mostly wifi, it maybe okay, but not really anymore imho. so my impression at this point is UNREAL with $10 plan with 1gb LTE data, plus the 500mb LTE data rollover and the reduced throttled speed after using up all whatever LTE data you have, seems like good overall value for me on a backup iphone. really more interested in having data and not making/taking too many calls with this UNREAL line.

but did one other test by setting up Google Voice with this UNREAL number for incoming calls ... and it works! just clicking the settings in the UNREAL app to Receive Call via Cellular and you're good for incoming GV calls. for outgoing GV calls, of course not expecting GV to work with the UNREAL app to make outgoing GV calls. no can do in FP. assuming same fail in UNREAL. so did not even try. but instead set up GV to call back to the UNREAL number to then make the outgoing GV call. so GV callback incoming call to do outgoing. and it works. cannot seem to directly set up doing the callback in the regular GV app? but on iphone, can set up this callback to do the outgoing call using the GV Connect app (which is a paid app worth getting if you are on iphone and use GV). wow. the key is making sure that UNREAL receive calls via cellular and it runs smoothly for me. very happy.

(of course, if you use hangouts, then you can use that for outgoing calls. but personally never did like hangouts. have the beta voip on another GV line on android. assuming that should work fine whenever the iOS version of the official GV app gets voip.)

will report back if come up with anything significant. otherwise this UNREAL sim card provides a doable line to work with for my purposes on my backup iphone.

  21. So I just ported my number from metro PC's to unreal GSM and the call and text are via native app. Have a LG Aristo 2. So far call quality sucks and choppy. Tried texting via native app and other end never gets text. I tried calling via native app and it switches to unreal app to complete call. Texting works fine sending and recirecei via unreal app. Gonna wait 2-3 days to see if call quality goes up .may be porting is still going through
