Microsoft Will No Longer Support Windows 10 Mobile by December 2019

Smartphone users who are still using Windows 10 Mobile devices, Microsoft has some bad news for you. The smartphone manufacturer will no longer support these devices by December.

This isn't the first time Microsoft delivered the bad news. Back in 2017, the company stopped developing new hardware or features for Windows 10 Mobile. Meanwhile, they continued to push security and software updates.

Unfortunately, the company will no longer release any security updates by December 10, 2019. Devices that will continue to operate after this date will be unsupported. Windows 10 Mobile, version 1709 will be the last release of Windows 10 Mobile.

Along with today's announcement, Microsoft is recommending its users to switch to iOS or Android devices. After Microsoft pulls the plug on Windows 10 Mobile support on December, users will only have three months for access to device backups for settings and apps. This means that it will only be available until March 10, 2020. Meanwhile, services like photo uploads and restoring a device from an existing device backup will continue to work for another 12 months from December 2019.

Microsoft's latest decision does not really come as a surprise. Instead of this business sector, Microsoft plans to focus on building apps and services compatible for both iOS and Android devices.

If you are one of the affected users, will you be switching to iOS or Android?

  1. On the other hand, Motorola has stopped updating my 2013 Moto X years ago. Nevertheless my phone works fine. Come to think of it, most of my devices with electronics (TV, car, stereo, etc) never receive updates.

  3. I have a Lumia 640, and I assume that talk/text and web browsing will still work on the T-Mobile network?

    1. Support for your 640 ends June 11, 2019, not December.
No security or bug fixes to help keep your pii safe after then.
      Make a plan.

  5. The smartphone has been described as one of the triumphs of capitalism, but it also a very cautionary tale of the weaknesses of capitalism. In the span of a decade the smartphone markets has become an entrenched duopoly of two platforms that not even another large entrenched monopoly was capable of penetrating. If you care about your privacy and do not want to be continuously data mined, there is almost zero alternatives out there.

    1. Capitalism has no real weaknesses. It has raised more people out of poverty and provided them a better life than any other system. It's not even close.
Prefer Swedish socialism? There were no net new jobs created for more than 60 years, and they ran out of other people's money. It stopped working, and is being reversed to good effect.

  6. They supported them? When did that happen? All snarkiness aside, our family has three of them, and they're nice phones. Yes, a little light on apps, which never made any sense, given a software company owns them. Well made Nokia phones, which we could still use as phones,or turn on the wifi setting and use Google Voice VoIP. What Microsoft did with Nokia reminds me of what GM did with Saab, Ford with Volvo...

    1. Take your chances with your PII. Or get Sailfish X or 3, flash it to a factory unlocked Xperia XA. Just give $60 to a friend in a licensed region and they can buy the OS download for you. Support is included.

The Russian gov is switching all iOS and Android phones and tablets to Sailfish.
