Verizon Customers to Get Free Spam Protection Service

Earlier this week, Verizon announced that its subscribers will be getting spam and robocall protection for free.

The Call Filter service was previously offered as an add-on priced at $3. Starting March, the feature will be available to all Verizon customers for free as long as their device supports its features.

This new announcement made by Verizon puts the company on par with its rivals, AT&T and T-Mobile, who both have been offering a similar filtering service for free. With this feature in place, customers can be on the lookout for spammy callers.

Verizon's decision to offer the feature for free follows the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) new mandate that required carriers to adopt the STIR/SHAKEN framework by 2019. This framework alerts customers whenever they receive a spam call.

T-Mobile took the first initiative to implement the standards when it launched its call verification feature last week.

To date, Verizon says it has been able to block almost 1 billion spam calls. The company has also identified over 300 million numbers linked with robocalls. Once the launch of Verizon's Call Filter service gets closer, the wireless carrier will be offering more information to help its customers make the most out of the free service.

  1. My Tracfone iPhone 6 uses Verizon cell towers and service in my local area. Tracfone, being a MVNO, has no way to implement robocall blocking, so would Verizon extend their robocall blocking to me as a "user" of their services and not an actual customer?
