Selectel Wireless to Stop Activating CDMA Devices

Back in July last year, Verizon stopped activating 3G CDMA data only devices from being activated, along with non-HD/VoLTE devices.

The wireless network also instructed its MVNO partners to follow their footsteps and stop activating such devices. This was a move they made in preparation for 5G. The goal was to shut down 3G CDMA network by the end of 2019.

Verizon MVNOs, like Selectel Wireless, have already started to comply with this network shutdown. Earlier today, Selectel announced that it will no longer be supporting CDMA devices starting May 1st.

The announcement was shared by NWIDA, which shows that Selectel will only activate HD Voice capable devices and 4G LTE data only certified devices. They will also only accept HD Voice capable devices and 4G LTE data only IMEI uploads into their Device Management Database.

Additionally, maintenance on non-HD Voice capable devices or 3G data only devices will no longer be available starting July 1, 2019. These maintenance activities include the following:

  • Rate plan and feature changes
  • MDN changes
  • Apply and restore from Hotline and Suspend status
  • Restore de-activations made in error
  • SIM changes on existing non HD Voice smartphones

Selectel Wireless also noted that upgrades to HD Voice capable devices and 4G LTE data only devices will continue to be allowed until December 31, 2019.
