Verizon Quietly Launches 5G Mobile Network in 2 Cities

This year, wireless carriers are battling with each other to be the first to offer real 5G mobile service to its customers.

Out of the major carriers, Verizon seems to be the one who is dedicated in making this a reality; especially since they have exclusivity with Samsung's first 5G capable device.

Earlier today, Big Red announced that its 5G mobile service has been officially deployed in areas of Chicago and Minneapolis. These two areas are among the 30 cities the wireless carrier have pinpointed for 5G wireless network capability this year. Originally though, Verizon was slated for a 5G launch next week. Today's news come as a surprise, particularly to its customers.

The launch today is different from the 5G home network deployment that Verizon deployed in four cities last year. The past launch had networks running on the 5G TF standard. Today's launch, on the other hand, uses "real" 5G NR standard intended for cellular networks. This means that users will be able to expect up to 450 Mbps averaged download speed and up to 1 Gbps peak speeds.

As of this writing, customers who want to experience Verizon's 5G network only have one device option available: the Moto Z3, which comes with a 5G Moto Mod. Samsung's 5G supportive device, the Galaxy S10 5G, is still expected to launch within the next two months. When it launches, Verizon will be offering the device to users ahead of its competition.

If you do have the Moto Z3 and you're based in Chicago or Minneapolis, you will need to pay an additional $10/month to use Verizon's 5G network. This, however, does not guarantee that you'll be able to enjoy 5G's full potential. The launch still covers an extremely limited number of areas in these two cities, which means it wouldn't be ideal to try 5G at this time. But if anything, Verizon is working hard at making this network available to more areas real soon.
