Google Fi Limits Data-Only SIMs to Four Per Account

Google Fi is currently cracking down on users who are apparently hoarding data SIM cards.

Earlier today, Google Fi sent out an email to its customers with over four data-only SIMs activated. These customers are entitled to keep these SIMs active. But if another data-only SIM will be activated, Google Fi will require them to deactivate one first. This way, they are able to enforce the cap on the number of data-only SIMs to the current level.

This email was sent out after Google Fi discovered some groups that were able to save $15 per month/person after they used data-only SIMs on their phones. These users were found to be using a virtual number with VoIP and web-based messaging apps. They also tinkered on the APN settings so that they could circumvent the costs for voice and text service.

After discovering this loophole, Google Fi put a limit of four data-only SIMs for each account. This means that if you want to use more than this limit, you will need to create a new Google Fi account and maintain at least one primary line. In the process, you will have to pay $20 per month for to make calls and SMS.
