Dish Officially Acquires Boost Mobile

It's official! Dish Network now owns Boost Mobile.

After a series of discussions with T-Mobile and Sprint, Dish has officially acquired the prepaid brand. True to its word, the deal was made official today, July 1st. Even though there were reports that T-Mobile was looking for another potential buyer, it looked like the two companies were able to reach a mutually beneficial decision.

With Dish now owning Boost, it can start competing against Verizon, AT&T, and the New T-Mobile. Dish intends to build its own 5G network over the next few years so it can be a full-on competitor.

Now that Boost is owned by Dish, the company has assigned COO John Swieringa to lead the prepaid brand. In line with the acquisition, Dish has relaunched the logo of Boost to include their own.

Boost Mobile was previously owned by Sprint after they acquired it from Nextel in 2004. Sprint was recently acquired by T-Mobile. And in order for the latter acquisition to be approved, there was a federal requirement to sell the prepaid brand.

As part of its agreement with Dish, Sprint will be selling its Boost Mobile brand for $1.4 billion, along with other prepaid assets. The agreement also includes access to T-Mobile's network for a total of seven years so that its subscribers can use the network while Dish builds its own 5G service.

  3. The Dish network will be based on the 5G New Radio (NR) standalone (SA) standard that doesn’t rely on LTE as an anchor. While Dish builds out that network, it committed to operate Boost using T-Mobile’s network in an MVNO arrangement due to last seven years. The multi-pronged deal included the divestiture of Sprint’s 800 MHz spectrum assets to Dish and gives Dish an option to take on leases for certain cell sites and retail locations that are decommissioned by the newly combined T-Mobile/Sprint.
