Huawei Gearing Up to Launch HarmonyOS in Its Smartphones in 2021

A year ago, Huawei announced that it was working on its own operating system. They later revealed that its custom OS will be called HarmonyOS and that it would be used on their smartphones. Well, it looks like they are getting ready to make this OS available to their customers.

Today, the Chinese multinational technology company released a major update to its custom OS called HarmonyOS 2.0. The developer beta SDK was released for smart TVs, in-car head units, and smartwatches today. According to Huawei CEO Richard Yu, the SDK version for smartphones will be released in December. In line with this, the CEO believes HarmonyOS will be available on smartphones by next year.

Some of the changes that HarmonyOS 2.0 comes with include an option to build a UI and scale it to various devices, such as a phone, in-car head unit, tablet, and a TV. It even comes with AI voice interactions so you can interact with content using your voice.

In addition to HarmonyOS 2.0, Huawei announced its latest custom Android UI update, EMUI 11. However, EMUI 11 is only based on Android 10 instead of a new one. This is because Huawei has been working around the US ban for quite some time now. The ban involves new versions of Android being prohibited from loading on Huawei's devices. And since there doesn't seem to be an end to this ban anytime soon, the manufacturer is considering to use its custom OS in its smartphones.

The new EMUI 11 update comes with new features: such as improved Always On Display options, custom art themes, and harmonized vibrations. They have also worked on a new privacy feature that show an indicator on the status bar when an app is trying to access your location, microphone, or camera. It also offers AI subtitles for real-time translations from English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

There is no word yet on when EMUI 11 update will be rolling out to the public.
