Report: Samsung Working on a Penta-Camera Device

How does a phone with five cameras sound to you? While everyone seems to be busy focusing on a device with four rear-facing cameras, Samsung is said to be working on a penta-camera device. Unfortunately, we won't be seeing it anytime soon.

According to The Elec, Samsung is working on a Galaxy A72 device that will feature five rear-facing cameras. It will have a 64-megapixel main sensory, a 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x zoom, a 5-megapixel "bokeh" sensor, and another 5-megapixel macro lens. In addition to the five cameras on the back, this device will have a 32-megapixel front camera for selfies and video calls.

This device follows the Galaxy A71 device that Samsung introduced last year. The phone had a quad-camera configuration with the same megapixel arrangement as the Galaxy A72. The only difference is the additional 8-megapixel telephoto lens.

And because of how successful the camera configuration of the Galaxy A71 was, Samsung has decided to use it on next year's device. If the Galaxy A72 turns out to be another success for the company, it won't be a surprise to find Samsung working on a penta-camera setup for a major flagship model.

The Galaxy A72 is not yet official. We will hear more about it when it nears its rumored release in 2021.

  1. Reminds me of the time when razor manufacturers were trying to see who can have the most blades.
