New York Launches Official COVID Alert NY App

The state of New York has just taken the wraps off of COVID Alert NY, the state's official app that focuses on COVID-19 Exposure Notification. The app was developed by both Apple and Google.

This isn't the first US state to have its own app. But without a doubt, New York is the largest one to unveil such an app. The other states that are using the system include the following:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Delaware
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Pennsylvania
  • Virginia
  • Wyoming

Aside from the ones mentioned, there are other states that are working to launch their official app as well. These include California, Colorado, Maryland, Oregon, Washington, and Washington, D.C.

The app sends out a notification to its users once they have come close to other phones that have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. Thanks to the opt-in system, they get an alert on how close they were to the patient and how long their exposure was. This way, the user can get tested if they were in contact with a positive patient.

The app makes use of Bluetooth to track the phones. For security purposes, it does not track the location of the user and even protects their privacy by using randomly-generated ID codes that are frequently changed. The more people participate in it, the more effective it is.

If you are from New York, you can get the Android or iOS app. You can learn more about the app here.
